IUPD welcomes cadets to the force

Finally, it was over. After 16 weeks of endless push-ups, junior Brett Rorem was ready to graduate. Rorem forgot to put his name on a test one day; his superior officer helped him count out 20 push-ups. He had to do 20 push-ups if he fell behind in the weekly run and 10 at the end of every day, along with the rest of the cadets.

Diversity presentation continues to educate

A year ago, a presentation was developed to address issues surrounding the Thomas Hart Benton murals in Woodburn Hall, Room 100. Today, the video and discussion sessions continue to educate students and faculty who attend class in the room.

Rain dampens first day of class for IU students

Labor Day, torrential rains and the jitters of the first day of classes. Those were the subject of grumblings heard from students huddled in door frames and doubled up under umbrellas Monday while 1.5 inches of rain fell on Bloomington, interrupting classes and forcing students to run for cover. Senior Amy Fischer, who was leaving the Indiana Memorial Union during spurts of rainfall, said she thought the rain was refreshing.

Bloomington awaits arrival of Dalai Lama

The 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, Tenzin Gyatso, will make a much-anticipated appearance in Bloomington this weekend to dedicate a new interfaith temple at the Tibetan Cultural Center. The visit comes at the tail end of Spirit of Tibet Week, an annual celebration offering discussions, lectures, Tibetan films and musical performances to the community.

WASHINGTON -- America's consumers, aided by tax cuts that left them with extra cash, ratcheted up their spending in July by the largest amount in four months, a strong signal the economy is gaining momentum. The Commerce Department reported Friday that consumer spending increased by 0.8 percent in July, on top of a brisk 0.6 percent rise the month before.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson and 13 people were arrested Monday after they blocked traffic on the Yale University campus in support of striking university service and clerical workers.

Pre-Labor Day gains boosted by technology

NEW YORK -- Tech stocks achieved their seventh straight monthly advance and blue chips their sixth Friday in an otherwise unremarkable pre-Labor Day session. Trading was extremely light. After fluctuating in the early going, the market by Friday afternoon achieved moderate gains. The atmosphere was dull despite encouraging reports on consumer spending and the manufacturing sector.

Best Buy to open Nov. 21

The Best Buy Corporation will open its first store in Bloomington, located just off of the intersection of the 45/46 bypass and 3rd Street on Nov. 21, according to Best Buy project development manager Travis Cinco. In June, Best Buy signed the lease to build the new store next to Barnes and Noble and close to electronics rival Circuit City, which comes as part of Best Buy's plan to expand the company's operation to 800 North American stores by 2006.

VENICE, Italy -- Oscar-winning director Bernardo Bertolucci is worried that his sexually-explicit new film "The Dreamers" might be cut in the United States out of concern it is too graphic for American audiences.

Media giant Vivendi to discuss final bids

PARIS -- The board of French media group Vivendi Universal will meet today to weigh bids by General Electric Co.'s NBC unit and an investor group led by former Seagram Co. chief Edgar Bronfman Jr. for its hotly contested entertainment assets, officials familiar with the talks said.

Lo Duca leaves games with injured jaw

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Paul Lo Duca left in the third inning of Monday night's game against Houston with a sprained jaw after he was hit in the face by a foul tip. The ball came off Jeff Kent's bat and struck the base of Lo Duca's mask, knocking it off his head and causing a brief delay while assistant trainer Matt Wilson and manager Jim Tracy checked on him. The same thing happened Saturday night, after a foul tip by Colorado's Preston Wilson struck Lo Duca in the same spot.

Powers welcomed back

Experience and depth may be two major aspects that could propel the men's cross country team to a very successful season this year. With the return of senior Chris Powers, the Hoosiers will only add to this depth and experience. Last season Powers redshirted his junior year to pursue studies abroad. He now has one year left of eligibility, and his coach is certainly glad that he is back.

LOS ANGELES -- Horror held sway at theaters again as "Jeepers Creepers 2" sunk its claws into audiences, debuting as the top movie with $18.5 million over the long Labor Day weekend.
