SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The Montreal Expos left Puerto Rico on a winning note, thanks to pitcher Tomo Ohka and Orlando Cabrera's aggressive play. The Chicago Cubs departed the island knowing they just fell short. Ohka took a two-hit shutout into the ninth inning and Cabrera hit two doubles and a triple as the Expos held off the Cubs 3-2 Thursday. The Cubs rallied for two runs in

The Hoosiers continue their long season-opening road trip this Friday when they head to Indianapolis to take on the Butler Bulldogs. Colts need win to prove their worth in AFC South

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts know the score: Tennessee 3, Indianapolis 0. It's only Week 2, but the Colts view Sunday's home opener like the playoffs are already at stake. What they need is a win to challenge the defending AFC South champs.

Tough test awaits Hoosiers at tournament

·

Seeking to snap their first three game winless streak since the 2000 season, the Hoosiers head up-state to South Bend to face Akron today and Fresno State on Saturday as part of Notre Dame's Berticelli Memorial Tournament. After a tie and a defeat to Georgetown and UConn respectively in last week's UConn Classic, the Hoosiers (1-1-2) fell six spots from No. 5 to No. 11 in this weeks adidas/NSCAA poll. The Hoosiers will conclude the five game road swing next Thursday when they return to South Bend to face Notre Dame.

Return home allows for fresh start

·

There's nothing quite like kicking off a new football season. Technically, IU has already done that. But they played two games on opposite sides of a very large country, which is no easy way to start a season, even for a good team. So playing at home gives the Hoosiers an opportunity to start the rest of their season on a somewhat fresh note -- kind of like starting your day by throwing on some deodorant and a hat in lieu of taking a shower.

Artists donate time to Amethyst House

·

At the Amethyst House, even the 12-step program to recovery can be the theme of a dance performance. The audience at the fourth annual Dance Performance and Celebrity Art Auction will see exactly that: "Sanctuary" is an original dance production by the Indiana Dance Theatre that draws on the themes of the recovery program used by Amethyst House addiction technicians. Amethyst House, Inc. is a not-for-profit United Way agency that provides high-quality structured living environments, treatment and recovery services to individuals with addictive behaviors, said Jana Hocker, the organization's associate director. According to its Web site, Amethyst House operates three transitional houses in Bloomington: a men's halfway program serving 19 men, a men's 3/4-way program serving four men, and a women's halfway program serving 11 women and dependent children. Amethyst House also operates outpatient programs in both Bloomington and Evansville.

HOME SWEET HOME

·

1925 was a long time ago. That's how long it's been -- 78 years -- since IU squared off with the Indiana State Sycamores (1-1). And IU (0-2) will hope to duplicate their success three-quarters of a century ago when IU shutout the Sycamores 31-0. The new AstroPlay surface will be a welcome site for the road-weary Hoosiers. IU stumbles into their home opener after being outscored 72-23 in their first two ball games while nearly surrendering 1,000 yards of total offense in the losses to UConn and Washington. Coach Gerry DiNardo's goal is for his club to put it all together. "Play the entire game," DiNardo said. "We played one game without playing either half, then we played one half, so the natural progression would be to play both halves." In order to play well Saturday and get a win, the Hoosiers desperately need a strong outing from a very young defense. Against Washington, IU only started one senior, cornerback Duane Stone, with five of the remaining 10 being freshmen and sophomores.

Amendment enables state power shift

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- The authority for Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan to assume duties as acting governor comes from a 1978 state constitutional amendment spelling out the steps for transfer of power should the governor die or become disabled. This is the first time that amendment has been used in Indiana since it emerged following a leadership crisis in the White House. "I think you could characterize it as a reaction to the turmoil created by the Watergate scandal and the subsequent resignation from office by Richard Nixon," said Chuck Coffey of the Indiana Department of Administration.

Matrix plugs in at IMU

·

Sophomore Matt Crawford spent $58 on his favorite new movie during five trips to the theater this summer. And that doesn't include what he spent at the concession stands. The theater was Kerasotes, the food was popcorn, and the movie was "Matrix: Reloaded." "I dressed up in a coat and sunglasses," said Crawford, a recent transfer to IU. "But I had to take (the glasses) off so I could see the screen." Freshman Kyle Brown was ecstatic to learn that "Matrix: Reloaded," the sequel to the popular classic, "The Matrix," would be playing in the Whittenberger Auditorium in the Indiana Memorial Union this weekend. Students were even more excited to learn that the showings, scheduled for 8 and 11 p.m., Sept. 11 to 13, are free to IU students.

Always a Hoosier at heart

·

The IU football team will play Indiana State this Saturday at its first home game of year. But sitting in the stand will be one less fan, as Governor Frank O'Bannon remains in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago following a stroke on Monday. O'Bannon, who earned a bachelor's degree in government from IU in 1952, has still maintained his ties to the University years later.

Honoring fallen heroes

·

At 9 p.m. Thursday evening, members of the IU and Bloomington community formed a circle that spanned the larger part of Dunn Meadow. The large circle of people, outlined only by candles, fell silent for eleven minutes to signify the second anniversary of Sept. 101. Prior to the eleven silent minutes, several hundred people gathered in Dunn Meadow for an interfaith service of remembrance and a candlelight vigil.

Local law enforcement agencies treat 9/11 as another day of service

·

Like most Americans, members of the Bloomington Police Department and the Bloomington Fire Department were clustered around TVs and radios waiting for any new information on Sept. 11, 2001. They saw the smoke billowing from the twin towers and pictures of their comrades running into the buildings to save lives. Like everyone else, they saw the towers collapse.

9/11 Scholarships awarded to three undergraduates in memory of IU students' fathers lost in WTC attack

·

On the second anniversary of a tragic day, while much of the nation was focused on loss of life, there was a glimpse of hope in the University Club room at the Indiana Memorial Union. There, the Indiana University Student Foundation awarded three undergraduates 9/11 scholarships created in memory of the fathers of IU juniors Rachel Jacobson and Jessica Moskal and graduate Joshua Goldflam.
