Hoosiers pick up first victory of season on home course

The IU men's golf team picked up its first tournament victory of the season at the Hoosier Invitational this weekend. In a tournament that saw the Hoosiers set numerous records, junior Jeff Overton once again led the way for the Hoosiers with his second victory in as many weeks.

Binge drinking linked to genetics

A recent study from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism finds that a link exists between binge drinking and an individual's genetics. But Dr. Paolo B. DePetrillo, co-author of the study, said atmosphere and environment are also important factors in binge drinking.

Somehow no one was happy

Students unhappy after peeping cases

Two IU students who have reported a rash of peeping tom incidents are upset their landlord won't let them out of their lease after police advised they leave their off-campus apartment. Juniors Jami Bennett and Maria Long are living at Lincoln Hill Apartments, 544 S. Lincoln Ave. The two said they have reported a "peeping tom" outside of their living room window seven times since last September.

Herbert wants athletics in proper context of University

IU's offense can't get going in loss

ANN ARBOR. Mich. -- In practice leading up to IU's game at Michigan Saturday, coach Gerry DiNardo challenged his cornerbacks. He told them whoever had the most interceptions would start the game against the Wolverines. That turnover mentality carried over, as IU had two picks and two forced fumbles in the first half against Michigan. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, the offense couldn't capitalize on any of those opportunities. IU lost 31-17 in a lackluster offensive performance, despite a number of chances.

3-year bus plan undergoes change

Islamic democracy discussed in weekend's lectures

The 32nd annual Association of Muslim Social Scientists conference met this weekend in Bloomington to discuss the topic "East Meets West: Understanding the Muslim Presence in Europe and North America." During his opening remarks, Dean of International Programs Patrick O'Meara said the focus of the conference was "Islam in the context of democracy."

Regional Latino bands highlight celebration

One by one, the people started to arrive. They came bringing their families, friends and neighbors to enjoy the first days of fall and, more importantly, the Festival Latino, a celebration of Latino heritage and culture and a six-year IU tradition. The festival, which was held in Dunn Meadow next to the Indiana Memorial Union, was sponsored by La Casa Latino Cultural Center of IU. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, La Casa works to give Latino students a place to come together as a community, said center director Lillian Casillas. "Our center started out with two goals. One, to be an advocate for Latino students, and two, to educate the student body about Latino culture and issues," Casillas said.

Gary man kills 4 family members

GARY, Ind. -- A woman whose nephew apparently shot four relatives to death before taking his own life says the mental health system failed to provide him with adequate treatment. "The system failed us; he needed help and didn't get it," Louvenia Walton said of her nephew, Terry Lee Dennie. Walton told the Post-Tribune that her 20-year-old nephew was schizophrenic and may have quit taking his medications. "This should never have happened," she said. "There were plenty of warning signs that should have prevented him from this."

A record-setting run

A record 3,000 participants and 200 volunteers took part in the Fourth Annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer Saturday, raising over $30,000 for Bloomington Hospital's Olcott Center for Cancer Education. Along with collecting money, the event also raised awareness of the services and support available for the many people touched by cancer.

State to fund second science building

The Indiana State Budget committee met at Purdue University Friday and approved about $32 million in spending for IU's second new multidisciplinary science building. The Indiana General Assembly approved the project earlier this year.

Knight lawsuit sent back

This weekend has brought yet another turn in the ongoing legal saga regarding the firing of former men's basketball coach Bob Knight. The Indiana Supreme Court declined Friday to hear the lawsuit filed by the Indianapolis Star, and the case was passed back down to a Morgan County Judge to make the decision.

Officials tackle binge drinking

Binge drinking has been a worry on IU officials' minds and a staple for many students. But the University is working to change that image. IU has implemented educational programs, scheduled non-alcohol-related events and imposed new consequences on students in the past few years to curb the drinking problems.
