In 1999 when The Matrix debuted, it was rightfully declared an instant classic. This past summer came The Matrix Reloaded. The flick didn't connect with audiences or critics nearly as well as its predecessor did though I dug it.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Kroger Co. and the union that represents workers at 58 of its central Indiana stores agreed to a 7-day contract extension Tuesday and to talks intended to head off a strike. The two sides signed the contract extension Tuesday evening after a federal mediator persuaded them to give negotiations another chance. Renewed talks now are set to begin later this week, company officials said in a prepared statement.
FRENCH LICK, Ind. - Proponents of a casino for economically depressed Orange County won a swift victory Tuesday, easily passing a referendum after a decade-long campaign to win gambling rights. County residents voted nearly 2-to-1 in favor of the referendum. With all 22 precincts reporting, casino proponents had cast 5,127 votes, compared with 2,642 votes against the proposal.

Voters reelected Democrat Regina Moore for City Clerk Tuesday by a wide margin over Republican and IU student Matt Stevenson. Moore won with 63 percent of the vote to Stevenson's 37 percent.
Although turnout at the on-campus voting sites was low Tuesday, a handful of IU students volunteered for the election. Other students traveled to 13 different polling stations ranging from the Monroe County Courthouse to Assembly Hall to cast a vote.
For many IU students, Election Day was just a normal Tuesday. According to the Monroe County Board of Elections, only a small percentage of registered voters at the on-campus polling sites voted.
After losing the Bloomington mayoral race Tuesday, Fred Prall wants to take a trip to Gettysburg, Va. "I want to see where one of the major battles in our country's history was won. I feel like I've been through one of those battles," Prall said. "Four score and seven years ago, the Democrats took control of this community and didn't let go."
ALPINE, Calif. -- Joined by the winner and loser in California's recall election, President Bush witnessed firsthand Tuesday a state devastated by fires that left over 20 dead and a trail of burned-out houses and blackened hills. "We've seen the worst of nature," Bush told firefighters, but the "absolute best of mankind." In a speech to firefighters and other emergency workers, Bush marveled at the "massive amount of destruction." "When people realize the scope of the fires, the historic nature of the fires, they'll realize what a superhuman effort you all put in to save lives," he said. "I saw firsthand what it means for people to draw a line in the sand and say, 'This fire's not getting any further,'" the president said.
Saturday's game was perhaps the most injury-riddled contest of the 2003 season. The Hoosiers played without senior captains Joe Gonzalez and Brian Lewis. Lewis didn't play because of a concussion, and Gonzalez left the game in the first half limping off the field. Gonzalez's X-rays were negative. Junior Matt LoVecchio missed the game because of lingering effects of a concussion. Junior right guard Chris Jahnke was injured in the first half, as well, but X-rays were also negative on the Louisville, Kent., native. In addition, senior Glenn Johnson bruised his ribs. IU coach Gerry DiNardo commented Tuesday on the current status of the injury situation and who would be practicing. "What I know today, I believe Joe (Gonzalez) will go, Matt (LoVecchio) will go, I believe (sophomore) John Pannozzo will go," DiNardo said. "I don't believe Chris Jahnke will go. Now that could change, as well, but this is what I know as of noon. Glenn Johnson is fine."

CHICAGO -- Conference USA added five new schools on Tuesday, responding swiftly to the departure of three of its top basketball programs to the expanded Big East. Rice, Southern Methodist and Tulsa agreed to leave the Western Athletic Conference for Conference USA. The league also added Marshall and Central Florida from the Mid-American Conference.
NEW YORK -- The Big East finalized its expansion plan Tuesday, inviting five schools to help rebuild the conference after defections of three key schools to the ACC.
