Colts survive scare from Titans, inch closer to title

Colts 29, Titans 27 NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Call the Indianapolis Colts road warriors -- and possibly AFC South champs. Edgerrin James ran for two touchdowns and Mike Vanderjagt kicked five field goals as the Colts beat Tennessee 29-27 to sweep the defending division champion Titans, taking control of the division with three games remaining. The Colts (10-3) improved to 6-1 on the road by scoring 19 straight points and forcing four fumbles, which they turned into nine points.

Paging Dr. Heimlich

Hey, does anyone know when NIT tickets go on sale? When Missouri center Arthur Johnson fouled out with 4:29 left to play, I figured, "Alright! This one's over." I was right. But not in the way I imagined. Sean Kline's free throws were the last points that IU would score the rest of the game.

'Ladies and gentlemen, spin your dreidels'

Why break a record when you can smash one? Alumni Hall buzzed Sunday, if only for 10 seconds, with the sound of 713 dreidels spinning their way into the record books. The previous record, set by the University of Maryland at 536 dreidels for 10 seconds in 2000, was unofficially broken, pending confirmation by the Guinness Book of World Records. As the crowd gathered before the event, volunteer "spinners" signed in and received a colored plastic dreidel.

Fans tune in to victory

Gathered in front of their computers and huddled around their radio dials, Hoosier fans across the country tuned in Saturday night to one of IU coach Jerry Yeagley's biggest victories in 31 years. IU defeated No. 1 UCLA 2-1 to advance to this weekend's College Cup in Columbus, Ohio.

Hoosiers all business after defeating UCLA

The IU men's soccer team was all business as they arrived back to Bloomington Sunday afternoon after their trip to UCLA. They grabbed their luggage from the baggage compartments of the bus and quickly walked to their parked cars. The players seemed to be over the euphoria of beating the defending national champions and No. 1-seed Bruins.

Hoosiers shoot lights out first half, but cool down to let No. 4 Missouri get back in game, prevail 63-58

IU junior guard Donald Perry scored a team- and career-high 13 points IU in Saturday's 63-58 loss to No. 4 Missouri. The 6-foot-3-inch Louisiana native also started as guard for the Hoosiers, his first start since his freshman year. Perry said he found out he would be starting the night after playing Wake Forest.

FALLING APART

For the second time in the last week, IU gave away a double-digit halftime lead. This time, however, the Hoosiers weren't as lucky as No. 4 Missouri rallied from an 11-point halftime hole, and a 14-point deficit with 7:14 remaining, to steal a 63-58 win in Assembly Hall Saturday. IU was outscored 21-2 during that stretch. Two free throws by IU sophomore forward Sean Kline with 4:23 left to play were the last points the Hoosiers would score. "We fell apart in the last four minutes of the game," Kline said. "Up 10 with four minutes, and just everything fell apart. We stopped executing offensively, turned the ball over a couple of times and didn't recover to the shooters. That's it right there." Every time the Tigers would score in the second half, the Hoosiers would respond.

IU knocks off No. 1

Once IU surrendered an early goal to UCLA on the road Saturday, most people probably thought the Hoosiers' chances of winning weren't that good. After all, the Bruins were unbeaten in their last 19 matches, a stretch that included 18 wins and last year's national championship.

Going Home, Coming Out

It turned out Cookie Sutkowski had known all along. When Owen, her 16-year-old son, came into her home office, bowed his head and told his mother he was gay, he looked up to see her turn around in the computer chair and tell him, "I already knew that." Cookie then left the room to find the photograph of her two twin sons when they were 2-and-a-half. The photograph depicts a young Owen and his fraternal twin, Garrett, who is standing in front with his arms crossed and an expression almost too stern for a 2-year-old.

Otis moving jobs from Bloomington

At peak operating capacity in 1989, the Otis Elevator Plant in Bloomington employed 1,180 workers. Today, 365 employees report to work at the plant, and following Thursday's announcement that Otis will cease all local manufacturing operations by the end of 2004, the number will once again be reduced. Otis said the plant will eliminate 135 hourly and 30 salaried product manufacturing positions currently occupied by Bloomington residents. Two hundred salaried positions will remain in Bloomington.

Trustees approve interim chancellor

The IU board of trustees approved Ken Gros Louis as the new interim chancellor of IU-Bloomington Friday on the IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis campus. Gros Louis also will serve as interim senior vice president for academic affairs beginning Jan. 1 after IUB Chancellor Sharon Brehm steps down. President Adam Herbert recommended Gros Louis Nov. 21. Herbert said Gros Louis will assume many responsibilities as the highest academic officer, including making the transfer of credits between campuses easier and leading IU's effort to work with Indiana's blueprint for higher education.

Buses fight pollution with soy fuel

Bloomington has taken another step toward cleaner air by test-running 10 buses on soy biodiesel. Bloomington is the first city in Indiana to use soy biodiesel within the community's three major transportation organizations. The Monroe County School System, IU Transportation Department and the Bloomington Public Transportation Corporation began running "test busses" on soy biodiesel Dec. 1.

Interim library director appointed

The Monroe County Library recently appointed Cass Owens as new interim director after the previous director, David Ivy, resigned. John Anderson, associate director of Main Library Services, said Owens, the associate director of Outreach and Support Services, would act as director until a new director is appointed by the board.

Kruzan to replace 3 staffers; final staff to be announced Tuesday

Mayor-elect Mark Kruzan will not officially take office until next month, but he has already begun making changes at City Hall. When Kruzan takes over for current Bloomington Mayor John Fernandez at the beginning of the new year, the mayor's staff will be absent of at least three people.

IU receives $5.5 million from endowment

INDIANAPOLIS -- Grants totaling $38.9 million will target Indiana's prolonged "brain drain" by encouraging graduates from the state's colleges to remain in the state, lured by the prospect of internships, degree programs and job opportunities.

Stone Age Institute opens

The IU Center for Research into the Anthropological Foundations of Technology Stone Age Institute, the first center in the world devoted to early human culture, has been completed and soon will hire scientists from around world.

Herbert chosen as graduation speaker

President Adam Herbert has been selected to speak at winter commencement Dec. 20 in Assembly Hall, IU officials announced Friday. The commencement ceremony, which will be presented to a total of 1,959 eligible graduates this year, includes a formal presentation of the graduating class by IU-Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Brehm. Herbert then will follow with his speech.

Wylie House holds open house
