National test average increases

High school students did better on the ACT in 2004 than they did in the previous year, raising the national average by one-tenth of a point to 20.9 out of 36, according to a recent study by ACT Inc., the group that administers the test.

Committee narrows AD search to short list

After more than a month of interviews, the Athletics Director Search Committee has narrowed its pool of 100 candidates to three to five, IU Alumni Association President Ken Beckley said. The 16-member committee received a total of 100 applicants by the July 16 deadline, with the goal of having the finalist pool reduced to, at most, six to eight by mid-August to present to IU President Adam Herbert.

Former Cowboy Carter 'Jets' to New York

Quincy Carter ended up replacing the quarterback who took his spot in Dallas. In an odd switch, the quarterback cut by the Cowboys signed with the New York Jets on Tuesday and will back up Chad Pennington. Pennington's backup last season was 40-year-old Vinny Testaverde, who was released by the Jets in June and became the Cowboys' starter when Carter was let go.

Hayes wins 100 hurdles as favorite Felicien falls early

ATHENS, Greece -- Joanna Hayes screamed as she crossed the finish line of the 100-meter hurdles in Olympic-record time. About 90 meters behind her, world champion Perdita Felicien lay flat on the ground, crying in disbelief. Felicien stepped on the first hurdle, tumbling to the ground and taking Irina Shevchenko of Russia with her. All Felicien could do was watch Hayes win in 12.37 seconds, breaking the Olympic record of 12.38 set by Bulgaria's Yordanka Donkova 16 years ago. After the race, Felicien still couldn't believe what happened.

Mavericks and Warriors complete 8-player trade

DALLAS -- The Dallas Mavericks got a big man Tuesday, completing an eight-player deal that will bring Erick Dampier from the Golden State Warriors. Dallas sent Christian Laettner, Eduardo Najera, two future first-round draft picks and the draft rights to guards Luis Flores and Mladen Sekularac to the Warriors for Dampier, Dan Dickau, Evan Eschmeyer and the draft rights to Steve Logan.

Summer Strokes

Many IU athletes use the summer to rest and prepare their bodies physically for their upcoming seasons, but for the reigning Big Ten Golfer of the Year, the supposed "offseason" can be just as busy as the season. Senior Jeff Overton's summer schedule finally ended Saturday at the 104th U.S. Amateur Championships in Mamaroneck, N.Y. The Evansville native was defeated by University of Nevada Las Vegas senior and defending NCAA champion Ryan Moore in the semifinals.

Muslim scholar who was to teach at Notre Dame has visa revoked

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The U.S. visa of a Swiss Muslim scholar who was to teach at the University of Notre Dame has been revoked, a State Department spokeswoman said Tuesday, apparently under terms of the Patriot Act. The work visa for Tariq Ramadan, who has been criticized for links to Islamic militants and for remarks branded as anti-Semitic, was revoked at the request of the Department of Homeland Security, spokeswoman Kelly Shannon said.

University to receive record level of research funding

Students, faculty and residents will all see an increase in funding for research at IU thanks to the Lilly Endowment and government grants. IU announced it will receive $413 million to support its research efforts on all eight campuses in a statement earlier this month, breaking the school record for the most research funding. That shattered the previous record of $397 million, set during fiscal year 2001.

Car crash takes sophomore's life

Brynn Bergin's favorite thing to do was hold puppies. "She loved to go to the pet store and play with the animals," Bergin's father, Michael, said. "When she was little we took her to the Humane Society to look at the animals, and she cried when we left because we couldn't take one home."

Is IU that boring?

Have we lost our famous Hoosier touch, they'll ask? Of the top 20 party schools profiled this year by The Princeton Review (no relation to the university of the same name) this year, we were listed at a cushy No. 15. We managed to rank 16th for college newspapers, beaten by a number of schools I didn't even know existed, let alone that they have a college newspaper. Our highest ranking in any college category in The Review was fifth place -- a dubiously weak honor for "Lots of Beer."

Pentagon blamed in prison scandal

Hilariously "Caught in the Net"

The Brown County Playhouse in Nashville, Ind., has brought another hit to its summer stage with Ray Cooney's "Caught in the Net." The comedy was nominated for the 2002 Olivier -- Britain's version of the Tony Award -- and the 2001 Evening Standard Award for Best New Comedy. The sequel to Cooney's hilarious stage play "Run for Your Wife," "Caught in the Net" is a British farce about a London taxi driver trying to maintain his double life.
