S-A-T is O-U-T

Bates College, in Maine, released the findings of a 20-year study of its SAT-optional admissions policy at the end of last month. In 1984, the college stopped requiring applicants to submit SAT scores. Two decades later, Bates' study shows very few differences between students who submitted their scores and those who didn't. For example, the overall grade point average of those who submitted scores was 3.11. Those who didn't submit scores averaged 3.06.

Committee planning ahead for Little 500 concert acts

Conference to focus on bettering race relations

Beginning today, that culture shock is diminishing, as part of IU's continuing commitment to bringing these groups together, and creating a diverse but harmonious environment for all.

Bands battle for Jill's House

Four local bands battled each other for a good cause Saturday at Dunn Meadow as part of "Jammin' for Jill." The event, sponsored by Union Board and Residence Halls Association, pitted the bands against one another from 3 to 6:30 p.m. All activities were free to the public, but everyone was asked to donate to Jill's House, a non-profit organization working to raise money to build a residence for cancer patients and their caregivers while they receive treatment in Bloomington.

'Live and Free' concerts offer variety

The "Live and Free" concert series is exactly what it sounds like: World-class performances of live music to attend for free on campus. At 8 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday all semester, the Bloomington and IU community will hear performances by various ensembles in the IU School of Music. Jazz band concerts are Monday nights, Band and Wind Ensemble concerts are Tuesdays and the Orchestras perform Wednesday nights in the Musical Arts Center.

You might notice something odd about the program," a small figure quietly remarked from behind his piano, "and that is that there's no program printed in it." A bemused chuckle floated through the hall as the audience shifted in their seats, eagerly waiting to hear what sounds would greet them next. The concert had opened with a double cartwheel and a raucous mixture of Viennese waltz, "My Way" and "Fur Elise." It was anybody's guess what he might do next.

Designer presents hyper-sensual show

PARIS -- John Galliano is reaching out to flower children; especially those with a platinum credit card. The zany designer, working for his eponymous fashion house, interspersed denim into fluffy cotton dresses and decked out his models in clunky, fur-lined hiking boots, some with stiletto heels, at his spring-summer 2005 ready-to-wear show Saturday. As usual it was sensory overload. There were pillbox hats, multicolored bikinis, pleated skirts with newspaper print designs and basket-like or inflatable hats.

Iraq disk found with U.S. school data

WASHINGTON -- Federal law enforcement authorities notified school districts in six states last month that a computer disc found in Iraq contained photos, floor plans and other information about their schools, two U.S. officials said Thursday.

2 IU students pursue interest in art therapy with IMP

Everyone has a particular medium that gets the person through life -- whether it's jamming out to a theme song, bingeing on a favorite food or simply having a cold one on a Thursday night. Senior Christy McGovern, one of only two art therapy majors at IU, finds her medium through art. She has combined her love for helping people, a trait she got from her father, and her artistic talents from her mother -- and has made them into her own major.

Student arrested on rape, confinement charges

An IU student was arrested Tuesday and charged with rape and confinement, Bloomington Police Department officials said. Stallone Lubanga, 24, a student from Kenya, is being held at the Monroe County Correctional Center with a $20,000 security bond for an alleged sexual assault incident that took place after a woman visited his apartment late Monday night.

Israel program resumes after security concerns

When Dan Anthon decided to change his life and get a second undergraduate degree at age 30, he never imagined how successful he would be today. Anthon, a certified and licensed art therapist in Evanston, Ill., discovered his skills and abilities by taking an online assessment test. The test results said he had an innate ability in art and design, so he went back to school to pursue a career in the field. During his art courses he heard about art therapy and had a gut reaction to it.
