Straight out of a 'dream'

The next production of the IU Opera Theatre will involve a rare collaboration between the opera and ballet departments - odd bedfellows, for the two departments hardly ever collaborate in productions. Benjamin Britten's operatic rendition of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," opening at 8 p.m. Friday at the Musical Aarts Center, is one of this season's operas in English that is actually a part of the English operatic tradition, rather than a translation from Italian, French or German.

Plotkin, Nguyen nab honors

On the same day that Brian Plotkin was named Big Ten Player of the Year and Lee Nguyen was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, the Hoosiers advanced to the second round of the Big Ten tournament.

Faculty meeting closed to public

The agenda committee of the Bloomington Faculty Council convened Thursday and upheld a decision to keep a Nov. 15 general meeting of the campus faculty closed to the public and the press.

Herbert asks Gros Louis to fill list of key appointments

IU President Adam Herbert gave interim IU-Bloomington Chancellor Ken Gros Louis a list of important issues to consider in the wake of his announcement to continue the search for a chancellor last week. On the top of the list were appointments for three high-level University positions, including a new vice chancellor for enrollment services, a new graduate school dean and associate vice president for academic affairs, and a new director of the IU Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching.

Carmichael Room to move to accommodate new labs

University plans to move the archival Hoagy Carmichael Room from Morrison Hall to the Indiana Memorial Union are raising criticisms from some faculty and graduate students. The space in Morrison Hall would be converted into a new biology lab, while artifacts ranging from the original sheet music for "Star Dust," Carmichael's most famous hit, to a cartoon representing him in "The Flintstones" would be displayed in a newly built room at the IMU, said Neil Theobald, IU Bloomington vice chancellor for budget and administration.

Hoosiers close season at Big Ten tourney

This weekend's Big Ten Singles Championships will not only mark the end of the fall season for the IU men's tennis team, it will also serve as a short-term rubric for piecing together an ever-evolving Hoosier lineup. "We've been having a good fall practice," said IU head coach Ken Hydinger. "If we want to be a team that wants to be a real contender and not a pretender, somewhere down the line we have to start winning matches."

Women's: Team looks for bid to national meet

Looking to finalize an NCAA tournament berth, the IU women's cross country team will play host to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at 12:15 p.m. Saturday at the IU golf course. Coming off a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten meet, the Hoosiers will attempt to finalize their résumé and receive a bid to nationals.

IU plays host to weekend Regionals

The injury bug dealt the men's cross country team a tough hand this week. After showing steady improvement and growing team cohesion, two key runners were diagnosed with season-ending injuries. Senior All-American John Jefferson, who has been plagued by injuries throughout his cross country career and freshman Tim McLeod, who put up promising performances early in the season, have both incurred stress fractures. Neither will compete Saturday on IU's home course in the Great Lakes Regional, the final meet prior to the NCAA Championships.

Al-Qaida claims Jordan bombing

AMMAN, Jordan -- Hundreds of angry Jordanians rallied Thursday outside one of three U.S.-based hotels attacked by suicide bombers, shouting, "Burn in hell, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi!" after the terrorist's group claimed responsibility for the blasts that killed at least 56 people.

Hoosiers welcome Brescia for 2nd exhibition game against Brescia

With its game against reigning national champion Baylor University looming on the horizon, the IU women's basketball team will play its second exhibition game Saturday against Brescia University. The Hoosiers are coming off a close 70-63 victory in their first exhibition game of the season versus the Hoosier Lady Stars last Nov. 3. Freshman forward Whitney Thomas led the team with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

Bombing kills 42 people in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Bombers killed 42 people Thursday at a Baghdad restaurant favored by police and an army recruiting center to the north, while Iraqi troops along the Iranian border found 27 decomposing bodies, unidentified victims of the grisly violence plaguing the country.

Sophomore gunning for starting role

As the IU women's volleyball season winds down, competition for the six starting positions is sure to heat up. The Hoosiers head to the Great Lakes State this weekend to play Michigan and Michigan State, and IU coach Katie Weismiller is intent on expanding her repertoire of players. And lately, a dark horse has emerged to earn her share of court time. Sophomore outside hitter Gabrielle Allison has contributed more than just kills to the Hoosier scoreboard. Her conditioning and fervid work ethic has recently had Allison flirting with the starting lineup.

A chance to change

That is funny is that I just scrapped an entire column of worthless optimism. I had paragraphs of propaganda comparing the Hoosiers to gladiators on their way to Ann Arbor Arena. It was colorful, full of descriptive adjectives, and it was a load of crap. What kind of chances do we have in Ann Arbor? About the same chances I have of hitting puberty ... again.

IU faces first half of must wins

Coach Terry Hoeppner said the Hoosiers have their "backs against the walls" after losing last weekend. IU will have to win its last two games of the season to become bowl eligible and end its four-game losing streak. As if that wasn't enough of a challenge, IU will be confined within the walls of the Big House this weekend. The Hoosiers will visit the No. 21 Michigan Wolverines Saturday -- a team they have lost 47 out of 56 games against in the series history.

Funeral of 4-year-old boy 1st of many for Indiana tornado victims

EVANSVILLE -- The final goodbyes for those killed in the deadliest tornado to hit Indiana in 30 years began Thursday with a slow walk past a tiny white casket that held a 4-year-old boy.

IU to face Tar Heels in 1st round of NCAA tournament

Xavier Keeling becomes first 2006-07 recruit

IU head coach Mike Davis is doing his part to add a little cream to the crimson state of Alabama. The Alabama native added two players from his home state two years ago with sophomore D.J. White and senior-transfer Marco Killingsworth. Thursday, he stole another prospect from Alabama by officially signing 6-foot-6 forward Xavier Keeling.

Filling the paint

The absence of sophomore forward D.J. White left the Hoosiers with many questions, but senior forward Marco Killingsworth had all the answers in Thursday night's 96-49 home win over the University of Indianapolis. Killingsworth scored 16 of his 22 points in the paint, seeing limited action in the second half. Coach Mike Davis rested the senior and the rest of the starters for most of the second half in light of the 65-28 lead at the time.
