Imagine a town with a sign at city limits warning: “Nigger, don’t let the sun set on you here!” Probably some racist Southern town from 100 years ago, right? Guess again. From the 1890s through the 1960s many towns through the West and Midwest forced out black (and sometimes Asian and Jewish) residents.

Voyeur facing child-porn charges

A man arrested for voyeurism at the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation building Feb. 6 is now facing charges of child pornography, according to IU Police Department reports. Christopher A. Casady, 40, of 400 Terrace Drive, was originally investigated by IUPD officers after someone reported a man peeping in the men’s locker room.

As far back as I can remember, flipping through the channels around this time of year always yields some sort of TV show chronicling the fanatical college students that flock to Florida beaches in hordes to drink, dance and bare it all on spring break. Some of the events are staged, filmed and broadcast in constant repetition with the help of MTV; others are brought to you by the good people from various corporate sponsors. One thing is for sure, no one is letting the college market take a vacation. While this sounds like all sorts of fun, I was far too exhausted for a good time of this caliber.

Hoosiers head to Cincinnati for 4-team regatta

The IU women’s rowing team will head to Cincinnati this weekend to compete against Cincinnati, Dayton and Eastern Michigan in what the Hoosiers hope is a promising race. “Without sounding too overconfident going into this race, we are the favorites to win,” coach Steve Peterson said. “We’ve won this race the past few years, and I would expect this year to be no different.”

Students hold Chinese language, culture festival

The Chinese Language Program at IU will be hosting its annual Chinese Performance Festival beginning at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Monroe County Public Library auditorium. The family-friendly festival will feature live plays and skits performed by students, as well as student-made video clips.

Kappa Alpha Theta cyclists eager to build on strong performances during Saturday’s series event

For junior Ali McCormick and her Kappa Alpha Theta teammates, being the best isn’t a goal. It’s their only option. But the women who call Woodlawn home haven’t crossed the finish line first at the Little 500 since 2003. It’s the longest streak for the four-time champs since 1999, when the women failed to win in their fourth consecutive race.

Religion can make people do crazy things. Whether carrying out a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv or bombing an abortion clinic in Alabama, there’s no denying the dearth of rationality in religion. This is especially true of a country like ours where creationism is actually considered a theory, and women’s wombs are subject to legislation. But just when you think you’ve heard it all, I found an article celebrating the latest fad among Christian fundamentalists – “purity balls.”

Local animal shelter hopes to solve overcrowding

Scurrying across the tile floor, a rabbit bounces. Following this fluffy cotton ball, a cat slinks, silently meowing. Upon entering the Bloomington Animal Shelter, such a scene greets entrants. But they aren’t the only animals visitors will see. Lining the walls to the reception area are numerous cages filled with cats, dogs of all ages. Barks and whimpers echo from the hundreds of these animals awaiting adoption.

Senate Democrats pass war bill

Hillel to hold ‘reJEWvenation’ program this weekend at the Hoosier Room at Memorial Stadium

There are nearly 3,000 Jewish students at IU who aren’t attending Sabbath services on Friday nights, says Tslil Shtulsaft, a senior Jewish Campus Service Corps Fellow at the Helene G. Simon Hillel Center. Although the Hillel Center offers service and dinner every Friday evening, students simply aren’t making as much of a showing as the center would like.
