Hating for the love of the game

·

For those not aware, I did not begin my commentary career giving opinions on the sports world at IU, nor do I limit myself to this realm now. For three semesters, I have been an opinion columnist for the IDS. In the tackling of topics that have been at times controversial, from politics to alcohol consumption, I have received personal e-mails and angry letters from people who disagree with my writings.

Around the world

·

Motorists can expect an easing of the recent gasoline price surge in coming weeks, with costs averaging about what they did last summer over the heavy vacation driving season, the government said Tuesday.

(Almost) all smiles

·

When news of the 2007 commencement speaker selection seeped through campus, neither enthusiasm nor eye rolls occurred to any large extent. Quite to the contrary: “Who’s that?”

UPDATE 5:58 p.m.: Sampson inks 6th recruit for next season

·

The IU men’s basketball team added yet another player to its already-illustrious 2007 recruiting class. Chicago native DeAndre Thomas – a 6-foot-8, 295-pound forward from Chipola College Junior College in Florida – signed his national letter of intent to play for the Hoosiers next season, IU coach Kelvin Sampson announced Wednesday afternoon.

The life of this world

·

This is a column I always expected to write, if only to justify to baffled and exasperated family and friends my choice to skip out on the upcoming graduation festivities. The pomp and circumstance of this silly day never really took with me. Still, I keep having to pinch myself, that I am now on the cusp of the daunting “real world.”

IU sweeps Monday doubleheader vs. Wildcats

·

Maybe the IU baseball team should play more Monday doubleheaders. With weekend weather conditions forcing the Hoosiers to play a Big Ten twin bill, IU (13-13, 3-5) took two games, 5-4 and 5-2, from Northwestern to split the four-game series with the Wildcats.

Erika and Heather, Belgian draft horses, bring a keg of Lebowski Lager from Upland Brewery to Yogi’s Grill and Bar Monday afternoon during the Dyngus Day celebration.

Dyngus daze

·

Two Belgian draft horses pulling an authentic beer wagon entered the Yogi’s Grill and Bar parking lot at 5 p.m. Monday. The wagon is filled with Dyngus Day party-goers and kegs of Lebowski Lager from Upland Brewery. After arriving, the beer and the party-goers made a quick exit off the wagon and into the bar to get the party started.

The 'perfect' business

·

At age 14 I was an up-and-coming entrepreneur. I had just spent several years running a successful video-game company but was ready for a new challenge. My goal was to find the perfect business. This business would be easy to start and manage, highly profitable and encounter no competition. I tried many different industries. Among them were the travel, jewelry and vending industry. But something was wrong. Within every industry, different and often unexpected problems arose. No matter how well-thought-out my plan, I was still not able to find the perfect business.

A Klan to march

·

You don’t like them and neither do we, but it’s OK because they don’t like anyone, either. Still, if we’re allowed to publicly denounce the Ku Klux Klan, stopping only short of libel, then they have to be allowed to march in downtown Bloomington.
