Dance showcase ‘nails’ success

With music and dance, the students of the Student Composer Association and the IU Contemporary Dance program swept across the stage Friday at the John Waldron Arts Center Auditorium. The show, titled “Hammer and Nail: An Evening of Music and Dance,” presented a quirky but rather impressive collaboration between the musicians and dancers.

Squad finishes 7th in conference championships

The IU rowing team left Lake Wingra in Madison, Wisc., with a bronze medal and seventh as a team overall at the 2007 Big Ten rowing championships Saturday. “I think in terms of our personal advancement as a team, IU did well,” said freshman Michelle Marchese. “Each boat came off the water pleased that they had great rows, but I think most of the girls were just disappointed with the outcome of the races.”

3 Hoosiers qualify for regional competition

The IU women’s track-and-field squad continued their push toward the Big Ten championships and the NCAA Mideast Regional this weekend at the 98th annual Drake Relays. The women added three more athletes to their pool of regional competitors.

Rising cases of HIV in Bloomington mean organizers of the Third Annual Bloomington AIDS Walk had more than enough reason to raise donations and awareness for HIV and AIDS in Monroe County.

Hoosiers finish 4th in conference

After a disappointing three-day tournament, the men’s golf team finished in sixth at the Big Ten tournament this weekend. Heading into the fourth and final round Sunday, the team was tied for fourth but did not perform well enough to win.

My interpretation of constitutional matters is that the government’s authority stops abruptly with the Bill of Rights in every instance. The precise enumeration within the Bill of Rights makes the interpretation of those mentioned civil rights crystal clear for me, and it is a perplexing experience when others feel compelled to give the government more authority than is absolutely itemized.

Teacher, East Allen Schools settle dispute over column

A settlement was reached with high school teacher and newspaper adviser Amy Sorrell on Friday after months of debate over an opinion column. Sorrell was threatened with termination over the situation that began Jan. 19 over the column, written by one of her students, advocating tolerance of homosexuality.

Archivists work to preserve 9/11 papers, photos, video in New York

NEW YORK – It started with a clogged dust mask that fell onto the desk of Jan Ramirez on the afternoon of Sept. 11, 2001. A friend had used the paper mask to breathe while fleeing downtown Manhattan as the air was filled with grit and smoke from the World Trade Center towers.

Shingle oak tree planting marks Arbor Day ceremony

A group of students clad in pajamas enthusiastically shoveled mulch and placed decorated stones at the base of newly planted shingle oak. The children were taking part in Bloomington’s annual tree-planting ceremony.

IU places 5th in Big Ten championships

The IU women’s golf team wrapped up its season at the Big Ten championship in East Lansing, Mich. The Hoosiers came away with a fifth-place finish that saw all of IU’s players finish the tournament in the top 50. “We definitely played with a lot of heart today,” IU coach Clint Wallman said in a statement. “The team did a good job grinding for good scores.”

IU falls in 2nd round of Big Tens

In its last meeting with Michigan, the IU men’s tennis team was unable to muster a single set and lost 7-0. On Friday, just six days later, the No. 20 Wolverines eliminated the No. 67 Hoosiers from the Big Ten championships.

False fire alarms plague Campus View

Though threatening to most people, the piercing sound of the fire alarm already sounds familiar for everyone who has lived in Campus View Apartments for a while. Since January, as many as eight fire alarms at the complex have been reported to the IU Police Department, said Capt. Jerry Minger.

Porn found in time capsule at U. of Washington

There were a few surprises for the University of Washington’s class of 1957 when they opened a time capsule sealed 50 years ago. Among audiotapes and copies of the yearbook and school newspaper were 1980s-era porn, a condom and some dirty underwear.
