La Dernier Cri: Fashion of the future

The fashion world is inherently fast-moving and trendy. It changes almost daily; trends are born and reborn, and new ideas are communicated all the time. The industry also takes cues from what is going on in the world.

Guest Column: IDS made wrong call

·

The Student Alliance for National Security deeply regrets the cancellation of Tuesday’s event featuring former Deputy National Security Advisor Meghan O’Sullivan. This was a program that students and faculty alike were very much looking forward to. The reasons for this cancellation must be clarified.

Reading a lifetime

·

Thirty-eight years ago, the building that houses the IU Bookstore’s second location didn’t exist. In that time, a check-cashing store out of the third floor of the bookstore’s Indiana Memorial Union location came and went. None of the IU memorabilia the store sold made any mention of the men’s basketball team’s 1976, 1981 and 1987 national championships – they were nothing but wishful thoughts. Barnes and Noble had nothing to do with the store – it was solely operated by IU. But there was always Paul Hazel.

IDS ‘hate speech’

·

The editorial printed in the Jan. 16 IDS regarding the Jan. 6 incident in the Gulf of Hormuth is not a serious attempt at a discussion of the event. A better way to describe the editorial is “hate speech.” Regarding the inci

For the IDS to print a column claiming that global warming is a hoax is quirky. To print two such columns in the space of three days is irresponsible. Chase C

Off-the-record

·

I agree the idea of holding a public meeting off-the-record is completely bogus. Meghan O’Sullivan, former deputy national security advisor to President Bush, (and indeed the whole nation) should feel comfortable having civil adult conversations about Iraq in the public sphere. But I’m also certain the IDS would have granted her conditions were only a

Public lectures not “off-the-record”

·

The Student Alliance for National Security invited former Deputy National Security Advisor Meghan O’Sullivan to speak Tuesday night at the Indiana Memorial Union. The event was advertised as free and open to the public, with one stipulation. Toward the middle of the press release, and at the end of the description on the associated Facebook event, the group stated that the speech would be “off-the-record for the press.”

Our time is now

·

The presidential primary season is in full swing. With three states already reporting and nearly half of the nation weighing in within the next two weeks, the country is moving rapidly toward selecting the next president of the U.S. On the Democratic side, the contest has been narrowed down to Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama. The Democrats are noticeably similar from a policy

King’s ransom

·

Though Martin Luther King Jr. entered our mythology with his “I Have A Dream” speech during the March on Washington, few remember that his greatest feats were organizing and activism, not oratory. Today, King’s legacy is torn at by political tribes as everyone attempts to appropriate him into their fold. Yet, his wide-reaching and radical message contained little accepted by the ruling class today: disobedience, anti-militarism, brotherhood and radical equality. Would the crowd holding up King

Pitching racial wedges

·

The golf world has landed in a sand trap of racial controversy. Kelly Tilghman, a broadcaster on the Golf Channel, jokingly suggested that young golfers could only challenge Tiger Woods’ dominance if they “lynch him in a back alley.” Her light-hearted lynching reference invoked an ugly history of racist murder in this country that has angered many and inspired protests.

The Iran dream

·

Several days ago, I had a conversation with the friend of a friend about politics within Iran. This person, an Iranian student studying in the U.S., was explaining what he thought to be the citizenry’s majority view of president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the leaders above him. He explained that rule in Iran was often harsh, and that a lot of Iranians actually liked and respected Bush for dealing with Saddam Hussein. Many Iranians, he said, wished Bush would help them get free of Ahmadinejad.
