IU professor Ostrom wins Nobel economics prize

IU professor Elinor Ostrom became the first woman to win Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences on Monday. Ostrom was honored for her work in analyses of economic governance, or the way people exercise authority in economic systems.

The international hit “Blood Brothers” opened Friday at the Ruth N. Halls Theatre, showing an audience of 350 how the luck of class placement has the power to interrupt families and brotherhood.

Jazz beats blues at benefit

On Saturday,local jazz pianist Craig Brenner, along with his band the Crawdads and several other friends, proved that at their “Dance to Live, Live to Love” benefit concert at the Bloomington Monroe County Convention Center supporting Bloomington’s Art of Mental Health Week. The band also celebrated the release of their new CD, “Live to Love.”

Comedian James P. Connolly entertained audience members with five stand-up performances at the Funny Bone Bloomington Comedy Club with jokes about bobble-heads, his Hispanic heritage, guns and cars.

David Copperfield performed in Bloomington on Sunday as part of his international tour “An Intimate Evening of Grand Illusion.” The show was his first stop at IU since his previous performance in town in 2004.

Students opened one of the first stage productions of “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog: The Musical” this weekend, which was written during the 2008 writers’ strike to bring entertainment to the masses for free.

BMOC raises $190,000 for breast cancer

Twenty-three men competed for the title of Big Man on Campus in front of a packed IU Auditorium. BMOC raised $190,000 for breast cancer, breaking last year's record by thousands.

The IU men’s golf team will hit the links for the fifth consecutive week playing at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif.

Crean optimistic about 2009 center's eligibility

In June, freshman center Bawa Muniru had only one class to finish before he would be set to take the court for the IU men’s basketball team. Five months later, he has yet to be academically cleared to play, and there is no definitive explanation as to when he will receive confirmation from the NCAA clearinghouse.

Hoosiers flatline in crucial contest

After dropping the last two games to tough opponents, a reasonable person would have expected an IU team ready to pounce and claw the life away from a sub-.500 non-conference team. Instead, the team countered with an uninspired output and left with a hazy view of its future.
