Wheldon wins his second Indianapolis 500

In the 100 years of the Indianapolis 500, few endings have provided as much drama as this year’s race as rookie JR Hildebrand crashed in the final turn of the final lap of the 500 mile race—ultimately yielding Dan Wheldon this year’s champion.

The centennial Indianapolis 500 reminded some fans of the Daytona 500 when Trevor Bayne claimed victory in his second career NASCAR start. One corner stood in the way of rookie JR Hildebrand accomplishing a similar feat. Though in his case, the track won in incomprehensibly tragic fashion.

Dan Wheldon, 2005 Indianapolis 500 winner, took first place in during this year's race when JR Hildebrand's car crashed into the SAFER Barrier when it drifted up the track and left Turn 4.

INDIANAPOLIS — Responding to outspoken criticism from drivers concerned about their safety, IndyCar on Saturday announced a compromise to its controversial rule requiring drivers to restart during the race side-by-side.

IU pole vaulters advance to NCAAs, Pipkin to quarters

Pole vaulters Vera Neuenswander and Kelsie Ahbe each qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships during June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa, while sprinter Devin Pipkin advanced to the quarterfinal of the men's 100-meter dash with a fourth-place finish in his heat.

Excitement may return for 100th-anniversary Indianapolis 500

Jeff Belskus, CEO of the speedway, informed The Indianapolis Star on Tuesday that ticket sales for Sunday’s race are in considerably higher demand, adding the track was earning nearly a double-digit percent increase from last year’s running and that it was the first time in three years the Indianapolis 500 has experienced an increase in ticket sales.

Track and field stays home for NCAA prelims

Fresh off fourth- and third-place finishes for the men and women, respectively, in the Big Ten Outdoor Championships two weeks ago, the Hoosiers will deploy 28 athletes on either squad at their own facility — Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex — in the NCAA East Preliminary Round from Thursday through Saturday.

IU baseball players earn All-Big Ten honors

Junior Alex Dickerson and freshman Joey DeNato each were named First Team All-Big Ten. Sophomore Micah Johnson earned Third Team honors, and DeNato and fellow freshman Dustin DeMuth were selected to the conference's All-Freshman squad.

Tagliani claims Indianapolis 500 pole

Tagliani posted a four-lap average speed of 227.472 miles per hour during the "Fast Nine" shootout at the end of the day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, besting 2008 "500" winner Scott Dixon's average of 227.340 miles per hour.

Baseball slips before finale at Illinois

Senior Dylan Swift provided some fun and sparked a rally in the Hoosiers' 8-4 loss to Louisville on Tuesday at Sembower Field, but coach Tracy Smith said he believes the team is mentally ready for its final regular-season series this weekend at Illinois.
