Freshman outfielder adjusts to catcher position behind plate

After IU Coach Tracy Smith’s team lost catcher Wes Wilson to graduation after the 2011 season, Smith thought Ty Downing would step in to the starter’s role this season. But Downing, a Bowling Green, Ky., native, felt homesick and decided to transfer during the semester break.

Dozens of IU student-athletes ditched cleats and jerseys for loafers and dresses Monday night during the second annual Spirit of Indiana Showcase at the IU Auditorium. The awards show honors student-athletes for accomplishments on and off the field during the 2011-12 sports seasons. Student-athletes voted on some awards, while the Athletics Department selected others.

Delta Gamma takes 25th women’s crown

Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Teter, Wing It, Kappa Kappa Gamma and Delta Sigma Pi had been battling back and forth all night with no team taking a commanding lead. As the 100th and final lap began, the six teams found themselves in an all-out, one-lap sprint to decide the winner of the 25th women’s Little 500 at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

IU comeback leads to 5-4 overtime victory against Notre Dame

After falling behind 2-0 early in the second half against Notre Dame on Saturday night at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne, the IU men’s soccer team fought back to win 5-4 in overtime after a second half full of goals.

Delta Tau Delta wins men's Little 500

Led by a breakaway effort from RJ Stuart, Delta Tau Delta won its first-ever Little 500 in front of a packed Bill Armstrong Stadium, ending the Cutters’ five-year winning streak.

Men's race: Top teams vie for championship Saturday

The weather forecast for Saturday predicts rain, which would create adverse conditions for the riders. Junior Tyler Dennis of the Black Key Bulls, another top team that placed third in Qualifications, isn’t worried about the rain.“It rains on everybody,” he said. “I don’t think it will affect (the race) at all. I think the top teams will stay the top teams, and everybody else will fall in line. Maybe mental toughness will be more of a factor.”If the Cutters do, indeed, extend their record to six in a row, they will have to overcome more than just the weather. This year, the team is without Eric Young, who landed the best ITT time from 2009-11 and won the USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship just four months after his final Little 500 appearance.
