Hoosiers play for first win against Stanford

The Stanford Cardinals will travel to Bloomington for women's field hockey action today at 3:30 p.m. The Hoosiers are looking for their first win of the season, their second since becoming a varsity sport one year ago. The Hoosiers are 0-3 so far this season. Stanford, who returns 10 starters from last year, visits Louisville, Ky. before heading to the Mellencamp Pavilion. It is questionable whether fatigue will play a factor in today's game.

Hurricanes, Red Wings set to face off in finals

The men's tennis team defeated Iowa Saturday to pick up its first conference victory of the season and their first overall win in the last four matches. "We needed this match," coach Ken Hydinger said. "We came in 0-2 in the conference and now are 1-2, so we have a chance to earn our way out of a hole." But climbing from the hole did not come easily for the Hoosiers.

Hoosiers victorious in opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- George Leach didn't want to sit the bench. He didn't want to wear the white practice jersey that denotes the second team. After Sunday's eight-point, seven-rebound, four-block performance in IU's 65-61 season-opening victory at Charlotte, Leach decreased the chance either will happen again. "I called my mom (before the game), and she said 'You know you can play basketball, so calm down,'" said Leach, who graduated from Charlotte's Olympic High School. "I just did what I thought I could do. I figured while I was in there, I might as well try something."

Davis: All 11 players will stay

With the announcement of Mike Davis as IU's next head basketball coach, attention turned to next season. Davis said he expects all 11 players to return and for the two incoming freshmen, especially Donald Perry, to contribute. "If somebody leaves, it will be hard to replace them," Davis said. "I'm prepared to beg them to stay. Hopefully they understand we can win a Big Ten title and a national championship."

SAN DIEGO -- Freshman guard A.J. Moye tried to fight back tears when he walked off the court after IU's 77-73 loss to Kent State Thursday in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Moye had just finished playing the best game of his career. He scored a career-high 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds, including two on offense in the final four minutes that delayed the inevitable -- the upset loss to the 13th-seeded Golden Flashes.

Hoosiers complete regular season

The men's soccer team completed its road season with a win and a tie against two highly regarded programs this weekend, beating No. 10 Rutgers 1-0 Friday and tying Princeton (6-2-5) 1-1 Sunday. The No. 7 Hoosiers (11-3-1) used a familiar formula, combining strong defense with the goal scoring of junior All-American Pat Noonan, who recorded two goals on the road trip. IU 1 Rutgers 0 The Hoosiers defense proved too much for a usually potent Rutgers offense, as IU recorded its 10th shutout in 11 wins.

From cheerleader to lifter

On the surface, one would be hard-pressed to find the relationship between 22-year-old IU grad student Michelle Amsden and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Perhaps they would guess that "Ah-nold" is her uncle or second cousin. Or maybe they would assume that the two had a small scene together in the movie "Jingle All the Way." Neither scenario is the case. The thing that Amsden has in common with Schwarzenegger is her ability to pump iron -- and lots of it. So much, in fact, that the former IU cheerleader is a national champion in the sport of powerlifting.

Hoosiers tie for 4th place at Northern Invitational

After having their first tournament canceled following the terrorist attacks on the United States, the women's golf team finally had their chance to compete. They tied for fourth place in the Northern Invitational in Champaign, Ill., with an 898 cumulative score.
