IU hungry for Boilermaker blood, conference win

Hoosiers set to spoil Champaign Homecoming

Last year, Illinois spoiled IU's Homecoming with a 35-14 win en route to the Big Ten Championship and a berth in the Sugar Bowl. This year, the Hoosiers are obliged to try and return the favor as Illinois takes them on for its Homecoming in Champaign, Ill.

Giants grab 3-2 lead with convincing win

SAN FRANCISCO -- Teased and taunted for tiptoeing around Barry Bonds, the Anaheim Angels decided to challenge him. Whack! Bonds lined an RBI double that sent the San Francisco Giants zooming to a big lead that not even these pesky Angels could overcome, winning 16-4 in Game 5 Thursday night to take a 3-2 lead in the World Series.

Nationals hinge on teams' upcoming match

Student Foundation adds new event

This April will mark a new addition to the ever-popular Little 500 events. Runners will now get to showcase their talents in the first annual Little Fifty. Patterned after the Little 500, the Little Fifty will feature a men's and women's relay style running race competing for glory and for a good cause. The race will be 50 laps (12.5 miles) and is sure to be as spirited and exciting as the Little 500.

Laid-back approach working

There are two philosophies to coaching. A coaching staff can be stern disciplinarians, barking instructions from the sideline. Or, they can be laid back and teach through hands-on examples, a laid-back attitude and humor. Credit coach Mick Lyon and his staff with the latter.

Giants even series in dramatic fashion

SAN FRANCISCO -- Just in the nick of time, the San Francisco Giants solved the Kid. David Bell hit a tiebreaking single off rookie sensation Francisco Rodriguez in the eighth inning, and the Giants rallied past the Anaheim Angels 4-3 Wednesday night, tying the World Series at two games each.

Kickers slowly earning respect

Last year, IU's kicking game was brutal with the place kickers and punters having little success. Junior punter Ryan Hamre and sophomore place kicker Bryan Robertson came into this season knowing they would face some pressure since both were coming off sub-standard seasons, they said. And with a new coaching staff in place, neither were certain what this season would bring. Hamre struggled his sophomore season after having a decent freshman year. He averaged only 31.3 yards per punt. Hamre said it all had to do with technique. He credits coach Brian McNeely with his improvement. "It was mostly my drop and my leg swing," Hamre said. "Coach McNeely has really helped a lot. He's gotten my technique to where it is now. He scrutinizes it a lot, and he pretty much tell me when I do something wrong." Hamre said he had a lack of confidence last year. So far this season, Hamre has an average of 38.3 yards a punt. The addition of McNeely has helped in that regard as well.

Woods' job is not to make social adjustments

Tiger Woods has found himself a nice mess. Well, actually, the nice mess found Tiger. The world's most popular golfer is caught in the middle of a social controversy, even though he has nothing to do with it. Augusta National Golf Course is a private club in Augusta, Ga. Like most other private courses in the U.S., it can choose its members based on whatever criteria its directors decide. Unlike most other private courses, though, it is the home of the most prestigious event in the world's biggest professional golf tour.

New recruit contributing in early season

In late June, instead of preparing for the upcoming cross country season, freshman Stephen Haas ran in the World Junior Trials for track. Because of that, Haas had a late start entering the cross country season. Going into his season, he was about four or five weeks behind his teammates. So far this cross country season, the highest Haas has placed on the team was seventh last Saturday at Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute. But, coach Robert Chapman said he thinks Haas will help the team tremendously in the second half of the season.

Rookie tackling the turf, adjusting to new situation

Adjustments to a new team and new region can be tough for some players. But for freshman forward Nikki Orciuch the adjustment from New England high school ball to Big Ten field hockey has been taken in stride with only a few bumps in the road. Orciuch leads Hoosier freshmen and is third on the team with three goals and seven points while recording 15 shots on goal. While Orciuch has made the transition well, that doesn't mean that she hasn't had to work for it. IU has played one of the toughest schedules in the country this year by competing against six of the Top 20 teams including Top 10 teams Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State. Orciuch said the competition chang has been a big one.

The truth isn't grainy; Rice the greatest ever

Jerry Rice's career can currently be summed up in numbers. Forty is his age. He passed the 1,400 career reception mark, passing the milestone last Sunday against San Diego. And then there is 200. Now that Rice is on the verge of accomplishing a most astounding, unimaginable feat that most football players, even great players, could only dream of accomplishing, I think it's safe to say that Rice is not merely the greatest wide receiver ever but in fact the greatest player to ever put on shoulder pads.

Team takes trophy, individual honors

The first half of the Hoosiers' season could not have been scripted any better. The Hoosiers return from Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. with the championship trophy of the Mission Inn Classic. Not only did the team capture their second championship of the year, but the top three individual scores of the tournament belonged to IU as well. Junior Karen Dennison, the No. 4 ranked golfer in the nation, captured her third title of the year. Junior Danah Ford recorded her highest finish of her career by placing second, and senior Cara Stuckey also achieved her highest finish of her career, placing third. The Hoosiers fired a final round 310 to finish the tournament with a combined 614, 19 strokes ahead of Big Ten rival Wisconsin.

Carter joins Dolphins

MIAMI -- Cris Carter came out of retirement and out of the broadcast booth Monday to join the Miami Dolphins, signing a one-year contract to bolster their injury-depleted receiving corps. The 36-year-old Carter agreed to a one-year contract with $550,000 guaranteed and $700,000 in incentives.

Win keeps Monon spike

The Hoosiers headed into this weekend against Illinois and Purdue looking to even their Big Ten record, and that they did. IU beat the No. 32 Illinois Fighting Illini and rival Purdue to even their conference record at 4-4.

Knicks suspend Sprewell

NEW YORK -- Latrell Sprewell was suspended by the New York Knicks on Monday for not following the team's instructions for rehabilitating his broken right hand. The disciplinary move came on the same day that Sprewell's agent announced a $40 million lawsuit against the New York Post for its account of how he was injured.

Computer knocks Miami out

Week full of honors

IU's reign over the Big Ten conference continued Sunday at Ohio State as the men's soccer team traveled to Columbus, Ohio and downed the Buckeyes 4-2. The win extended the Hoosiers consecutive winning streak in regular season conference games to 36 and gave IU its seventh consecutive No. 1 seed for the Big Ten Tournament.The team has also reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in both College Soccer News' poll and the adidas/NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) poll.

Women win all 16 events against Evansville

Saturday's swim meet opened with the IU women sweeping the 200 yard medley relay to take the top three places. This event set the tone for the rest of the day as IU went on to win every women's event, sweeping 12 of the 16 events. This led to IU's 185.5 to 103.5 victory over the Evansville Purple Aces.
