IU gears up for conference play

With the Big Ten season opening this weekend, the IU baseball team will look to fine tune itself for conference play today against Saginaw Valley State (10-2) with a 3 p.m. start at Sembower Field. IU (13-2) returned from its spring break in Bradenton, Fla., winning five of six and carrying a three-game winning streak into today's contest.

Loss ends chance for title run

BOSTON -- There's an old saying in sports that goes "Defense wins Championships." It is a mantra that has been passed down from coach to coach for generations and has held true on every level. A few examples: The 1985 Chicago Bears won the Super Bowl behind one of the best NFL defenses of all time. The Detroit Pistons of the late 80's and early 90's won two straight NBA titles due, in large part, to their scrappy play that frustrated opponent's offenses. In the 70's, the Pittsburgh Steelers were renowned for their "Steel Curtain" defensive line.

IU ousted early in NCAA tourney

BOSTON -- When IU failed to score in the final 7:55 during the Feb. 1 loss to Louisville, those numbers became infamous. But they just might have been replaced Sunday when the Hoosiers faced the University of Pittsburgh in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

CHICAGO -- Bracey Wright needed help as he was escorted off the court into the locker room late in the first half. Just minutes later, Marshall Strickland was taken to the locker room after his head collided with Illinois sophomore guard Luther Head, causing Strickland to bleed profusely. Two freshman guards gone and senior forward Jeff Newton on the bench with foul trouble highlighted a disastrous start to the second semi-final game in the Big Ten Tournament.

Davis to face alma mater

BOSTON—IU coach Mike Davis thought about scheduling a non-conference game against Alabama, his alma mater, this past season. But then he said he decided to wait until some of the Crimson Tide's players were off the roster. The players that scared him off included sophomore point guard Maurice Williams (16 ppg, 3.9 apg), senior forward Erwin Dudley (14.7 ppg. 9.5 rpg) and freshman swingman Kennedy Winston (11.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg).

Sweet revenge for IU with Penn State win

Top teams await on West Coast road trip

During spring break the Hoosier water polo team will embark on a seven game road trip traveling to six different cities in California and one in Arizona. The stretch includes games against three top ten opponents and one top 20 opponent. IU will start the road trip by playing No. 10 University of California-San Diego. The Hoosiers are winless in two games against the Tritons in their history. IU then has Saturday off before playing Redlands on Sunday, a squad the Hoosiers are 3-0 against. The Hoosiers will participate in the California State-San Bernandino Coyote Classic on Sunday. There, the Hoosiers will square off with Laverne and Cal State-San Bernandino. IU has never played either team. The following day, the Hoosiers will face No. 9 San Diego State and No.19 Arizona State for the first time.

Hot hitting prevails in cold weather

It was a tale of three innings as the IU baseball team amassed 16 runs in three frames to defeat DePauw 17-1 on a cold Thursday afternoon at Sembower Field. The Hoosiers scored four, five, and seven runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings, respectively, to subdue the Tigers.

Men send two to NCAA Indoor Championships

The track and field indoor season concludes this weekend with the NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Ark. The Hoosiers were able to qualify two individuals. Sophomore Aarik Wilson qualified in both the long and triple jump and sophomore John Jefferson made the field in the mile.

Coach could gain four titles at Arkansas this weekend

This weekend, the IU track and field team will send three of its top athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., in hopes of bringing home titles in four events. Senior Rachelle Boone is competing in the 60- and 200-meter dashes, senior Danielle Carruthers is entered in the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles, and senior Rose Richmond is competing in the long jump.
