Hoosiers down UNC-G 71-64 in season opener

Earlier in the week, IU coach Mike Davis wasn't sure who he could count on to be his top scorer. But in IU's 71-64 win over UNC-Greensboro, it was sophomore guard Bracey Wright who came out on top with 23 points, along with two assists and one block.

IU embarks on quest for Cup

The bitter end

The battle for the Bucket turned into a 15-round slugfest. Heavily favored Purdue got all it wanted from the Hoosiers, yet in the end, the Boilermakers escaped Memorial Stadium with a 24-16 win Saturday. Purdue coach Joe Tiller said he was impressed with IU's play. "We feel fortunate to come out of here with a win," Tiller said. "We felt like Indiana played really inspired football, and our hats go off to them. I actually thought they played better than we did today at times. We had moments where we played extremely well, but also had moments where we were plain and flat getting outplayed by the Hoosiers."

IU returns home to face Illini, Wildcats

After splitting a two-game road trip to Iowa and Minnesota, the Hoosiers come back home to face Illinois and Northwestern this weekend. IU currently sports an 11-16 overall record, going 4-12 in the Big Ten.

Hoosiers play host for IU Invitational

This weekend the No. 13 IU women's swimming and diving team will be holding the IU Invitational at Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. This will be the first three-day event for the team and the field will include No. 23 Missouri and Big Ten foes Michigan State and Illinois among other schools.

Team happy to start season

IU opens its wrestling season Sunday by competing in the Missouri Open, a national tournament that features some of the best wrestling schools in the nation. The team, which is coming off a 16-9 record last season, returns a healthy dose of tested sophomores and welcomes a large freshman class, creating a young group of wrestlers.

Basketball season officially begins

The 104th season of IU basketball officially kicks off tonight at Assembly Hall with a contest against UNC-Greensboro. Even after two wins in their exhibition campaign, IU coach Mike Davis said they still have a lot to think about. "We just have to figure out who's going to score," Davis said. "I can't sit here and tell you what guys are going to be in double figures, because I don't know."

Green's fiancee pleads innocent WESTLAKE, Ohio -- William Green's fiancee pleaded innocent Thursday to charges she stabbed the Cleveland Browns running back at their home. Green was wounded under his left shoulder blade during a fight Wednesday, police said.

Why a bucket?

It's hard to believe that one of the most famous trophies in college football came from a farm in southern Indiana. But that farm, between Kent and Hanover, Ind., is where the Old Oaken Bucket called home before becoming the winner's prize in the IU-Purdue football game. The bucket's inaugural appearance came in the 1925 game, which ended in a 0-0 tie. Purdue's Fritz Ernst and IU's Wiley J. Huddle were given the job of finding the trophy. The pair found what they were looking for at the old Bruner Farm.

Freshman makes impact

No sophomore slump for Valentin

With only two active players on the latter half of their college careers, IU coach Kathi Bennett has a corral full of young guns to holster. One sharp shooter Bennett won't have to worry about is sophomore Cyndi Valentin. Valentin, at a mere 19 years old, is actually one of the most battle-tested Hoosiers, logging impressive minutes in all 28 of IU's games. However, minutes aren't the only statistic Valentin feasted upon last season.
