Weis eager to begin season at Notre Dame

·

SOUTH BEND -- Just like everyone else, new Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis is eager to see how much of his coaching the Fighting Irish have absorbed. The former offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots arrived in South Bend with a thick playbook that helped win three Super Bowls in four years. He knows his offense works. He's hoping the Irish, who have struggled dismally on offense the past five seasons, can make it work.

Golf for the non-golfer

·

It's a picturesque day for golf. Clear skies, fresh grass and a gentle breeze all provide the setting for a Saturday afternoon tournament. On hole No. 8, James Stogdill lofts a shot high into the afternoon sky. The pin is certainly reachable from the tee box, and as Stogdill's shot drifts ever closer to its target, gentle gasps of hope begin rising from his foursome.

Overton recounts putt of a lifetime

·

A whole summer of work seemed to be crashing down as former IU golfer Jeff Overton stood on the fourth tee in the final pairing of the Walker Cup. Welsh golfer Nigel Edwards had stormed out of the gate to take the first three holes from Overton. Spotting three holes to a three-time Walker Cup verteran, 15 years his senior, put Overton in a seeminly inescapable corner.

Agassi greeted warmly in 20th Open

·

Like an ageless rock star, Andre Agassi took the court for his 20th straight U.S. Open to roars that drowned out his introduction. He gave his adoring fans one more memory Monday night in a match that was little more than a practice session, and he left, as always, blowing kisses in all directions. No one, not even Agassi, knows if this will be his last U.S. Open, but if it is he started it out in fine fashion with a tidy 69-minute, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 romp over an overwhelmed and thoroughly outclassed Romanian, Razvan Sabau.

"He has been examined, and he's fine," Dungy said.

Finding the right fit

After a year of consistency in the Hoosier lineup, Freitag experimented with several different combinations of players throughout Saturday's match. "I just want to find the right starting 11, the right chemistry," Freitag said. "I've kind of been jerking the guys around a little bit because I've been making so many changes."

·

DENVER -- Maurice Clarett's first stab at the NFL will end the same way his last two seasons on the sideline did: no carries, no yards, one big disappointment. Unable to practice much or play at all during the preseason, Clarett will be released by the Denver Broncos later this week, his agent said Sunday. "The kid called me and let me know they're going to let him go," Clarett's agent Steve Feldman said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.
