COLUMBUS, Ohio – The sun was shining brightly throughout the weekend, but unfortunately for the Hoosiers it wasn’t shining on them.

In a sprint to the finish, the Cutters earned their eighth all-time championship. Cutters junior Alex Bishop beat out riders from Phi Kappa Psi, Dodds House, Black Key Bulls and Team Major Taylor to take the checkered flag.
The IU soccer team’s players know good time management. They practice, attend class and compete regularly, yet they also manage to give back to the community.
With its NCAA tournament status uncertain, there is only one formula for the No. 64 IU men’s tennis team: win. The team’s ranking might turn out to be too low to earn a spot in the 64-team field.
Tournament time is almost here, but first comes a pit stop. The IU women’s golf team will start postseason play soon, but first the Hoosiers have one more regular season task. On Saturday, they will compete in the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational at the newly renovated Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.
As predicted by many riders, the 57th running of the Little 500 came down to a final-lap sprint. A pack of five teams were in contention going into the final 10 laps. In the end, Cutters rider Alex Bishop out-sprinted Phi Kappa Psi rider Erik Styacich to the finish line. Dodds House, Black Key Bulls and Team Major Taylor rounded out the top-five.
Some say Little 500 is all about strategy. But the women of Teter seem to have a pretty simple equation that serves as a team motto: “Ride fast, turn left.” And so long as they try their hardest, the No. 1 goal for the women is to have fun. “If our best means we are the best, that would be extra fun,” said junior Teter rider Sydney Hatten.
Every rider in Saturday’s Little 500 wants what senior Dodds House rider Chris Chartier has: a championship ring. With the defending champion Alpha Tau Omega watching the race from the bleachers after failing to qualify, Dodds House is the most recent team in this year’s race to have won a championship. Dodds won the race in 2005.
Following Tuesday’s 9-7 loss to Indiana State, IU baseball coach Tracy Smith expressed concern not that his team had lost, but how it lost.
Sunday afternoon, seniors Laura McGaffigan and Cecile Perton will play their final match in Bloomington. The senior co-captains of the IU women’s tennis team have been staples in the team’s lineup since their freshman year, and their importance on and off the court has continued to grow.
When senior Dylan Wickersham took his first diving class, he didn’t know it would lead him to major in underwater archaeology. He also didn’t know that his major, with a little business twist, would make him stick out from all the other hundreds of Little 500 riders in this year’s race.
The IU softball team will host Michigan and Michigan State this weekend at home before embarking on a monthlong road trip. The 2-7 record the Hoosiers have on the road, coupled with a 1-9 mark in the Big Ten, doesn’t bode well for the future of the IU season.
Originally, the IU track-and-field teams had the Little 500 weekend off. But when the Indiana Relays were canceled April 7 due to bad weather, their coaches added this weekend’s Cardinal Invitational to their schedule.
SAN FRANCISCO – Rich Aurilia spent his first nine big league seasons as a fan favorite in San Francisco.
As the cyclists for Kappa Delta drove from place to place during their spring-break training trip, a photo from the finish of last year’s Little 500 hung in their car. The photo shows then-Kappa Delta senior Lauren Ziemba crossing the finish line a mere inches behind Kappa Kappa Gamma’s Jess Sapp. And at the bottom their coach wrote “2007 will be different. Expect to win.”
The IU water polo team is undefeated in conference play, and it’s riding a seven-game winning streak. IU’s last game was an emotional overtime victory against rival Michigan. But heading into the Western Division Championships this weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich., none of it matters.
The IU men’s golf team will play its last regular-season tournament this weekend at the Fossum/Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich.
MARTINSVILLE – From atop the bleachers at Bill Armstrong Stadium, thousands of fans that attend the Little 500 bike races can see how well their teams are performing. But for some race spectators, what the riders are doing is far less important than what they are wearing.
ALAMEDA, Calif. – Getting the No. 1 selection in the NFL draft usually means a team hasn’t picked well in previous years. That’s half true with the Oakland Raiders.
MONTE CARLO, Monaco – Rafael Nadal extended his winning streak on clay to 63 matches Wednesday after beating Juan Ignacio Chela 6-3, 6-1 in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters.
