Iowa surges late, steals win

·

It was a game the Hoosiers were supposed to win and a game they had all but wrapped up. The IU women's basketball team (13-5, 2-3) lost to the Iowa Hawkeyes (11-7, 3-2) 71-67 on Thursday night at Assembly Hall, in a game in which the Hoosiers dominated until the seven-minute mark in the second half.

Undefeated No. 21 Hoosiers set to face Eastern Illinois in dual meet

·

As the IU wrestling team practiced on the court level of Assembly Hall, the giant arena filled with intensity. Coach Duane Goldman paced back and forth, yelling "dig deep" to his wrestlers who tussled with one another in an attempt to put their opponents against the padded wrestling-room walls.

IU looks to reassert itself on the road in Big Ten

·

Big Ten road games have not been kind to the IU men's basketball team. Since 1992 -- a year when the Hoosiers went 8-1 on the road en route to a conference title -- the Hoosiers are a combined 38-61 away from Assembly Hall.

Hoosiers return to action

·

It's been about 10 weeks since the IU women's tennis team's last event. With Sunday marking the beginning of the team's dual-match portion of the season, the Hoosiers will be as concerned with playing up to their capabilities as they will be about their two opponents on Sunday, Western Michigan and Miami of Ohio.

Back in Gold and Black

·

All week long, IU women's basketball coach Felisha Legette-Jack avoided questions about Sharon Versyp. She was trying to keep her team focused on Iowa, not Versyp, the former IU and current Purdue head coach. After Thursday's 71-67 loss against the Hawkeyes, Legette-Jack still wasn't ready to look ahead to the Boilermakers. "It's a 24-hour window," Legette-Jack said. "(Friday) we're going to get back to work. We'll start working on ourselves for a day, and then we'll start thinking about Purdue maybe Saturday." The Hoosiers (13-5, 2-3 ) travel to West Lafayette on Sunday to take on the No. 13 Boilermakers (15-3, 4-1) and their former coach, who left IU after one season to take the coaching job with her alma mater.

Sharper: Grossman talked trash during Bears' first win

·

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Minnesota safety Darren Sharper remembers it clearly, though it's been more than two months since Chicago quarterback Rex Grossman threw a late touchdown pass to beat the Vikings at the Metrodome. What happened next seems un-Rex like. The Bears' young quarterback started to talk trash to the Vikings. Apparently big-time. "In 10 years in the league I haven't had a quarterback do that any time to me, so we definitely remember that, and the guys in the locker room remember that," Sharper said Wednesday as the teams got ready for a rematch Sunday at Soldier Field.

Purdue unable to engineer victory

·

If there was one change from the first half to the second in IU's 85-58 victory over Purdue Wednesday night, it was IU's growing lead. It started at 12, thanks to IU's stifling defense, which held the Boilermakers to just 22 points in the first half.

Ratliff leads Hoosier bench, tallies 16 points with cast on left wrist

·

IU junior A.J. Ratliff played Wednesday night's game against Purdue with a cast on his left wrist. But that didn't stop the guard from coming off the Hoosiers' bench and pouring in 16 points, including a 4-for-4 tab from beyond the arc and a perfect 6-for-6 from the field. Ratliff and the rest of the IU reserves combined for 46 points during the Hoosiers' 85-58 victory against Purdue. "It feels good," Ratliff said of his performance. "I did a lot of shooting this week, a lot of shooting when I was out with that injury. The ball felt good coming out of my hands and my teammates were getting it to me when I was open."

Legette-Jack not looking past conference rival Hawkeyes

·

IU women's basketball coach Felisha Legette-Jack knows the importance of having a focused team. During Tuesday's Big Ten coaches conference call, Legette-Jack was asked about Sunday's game against Purdue, a team coached by Sharon Versyp, who was the Hoosiers' head coach just one year ago.

Unrivaled history

·

IU guard Rod Wilmont summed up the Hoosiers' rivalry with the Purdue Boilermakers in one word Tuesday afternoon: pride.

Rivals both use similar style

·

When the Hoosiers line up across from Purdue tonight at Assembly Hall, they'll see a lot of themselves in their opponents. Both teams average 72 points per game. Both teams hold their opponents to less than 65 points per game - Purdue to 64.1 and IU to 59. IU rebounds with more frequency, but only by three rebounds per game. And at 1-1 in the Big Ten, both teams are searching for their second conference victory tonight.

Partial stadium demolition begins

·

IU must tear down to build up. First to go are Memorial Stadium's north end-zone bleachers, a demolition that began last week. Fifty-five million dollars later, new weight-training and basketball-practice facilities and softball and baseball complexes will adorn the IU campus.
