Bad weather plagues 6th running of the Little 50

Rain, thunder and lightning. The sixth running of the Little 50 was plagued by Mother Nature’s obstacles but showed the mental toughness of its competitors. With weather delays adding up to more than an hour, the runners lost rhythm but battled relentlessly during the 50-lap relay race.

Around lap 20 of the women’s Little 500, Teter looked like it might run away with a win. The Spring Series champions had senior Sarah Rieke, one of the top individual riders, on the bike and had pushed out their lead to close to a lap.

Having a 101-degree fever and competing in the heat of the south is not something easy to do. Sophomore high jumper Jared Nuxoll faced these conditions two weeks ago at the Alabama Relays and was disappointed with his sixth place finish.

IU looks to best slumping Buckeyes at home

Before Wednesday night’s game against Indiana State, the IU softball team had committed errors in eight straight games. Against Big Ten opponent Ohio State this weekend, the Hoosiers will look to stay error-free for a second game and begin to move out of the cellar of the Big Ten.

Since last year’s race, many of the stars have moved on and other teams have improved. Pre-race favorites failed to perform well in qualifications and the competition in Spring Series events was balanced.

It’s up for grabs.

With the 58th annual men’s Little 500 set for Saturday at 2 p.m., Cutters senior Paul Sigfusson has not had time to think about last year’s Little 500 victory and what it will be like to take the track at Bill Armstrong Stadium as defending champions.

Former IU recruit commits to Xavier
