Fans come out when team starts winning

As Steve Schott surveyed the steady stream of people crowding into the Coliseum before Wednesday night's game, he finally discovered the solution to the Oakland Athletics' perpetual lack of fan support. "I guess if we win 19 in a row every time, everybody will come out to support us," the A's owner said with a grin.

2 soccer players bring worldly experience home

As the IU men's soccer team prepared for their opening matches last week, two of the Hoosiers top scorers were nowhere to be found. Sophomore midfielder Ned Grabavoy and sophomore forward Mike Ambersley were in L'Alcudia, Spain, competing for the United States Under-20 National Team in the COTIF XIX Torneig Internacional.

Superior Spitz

Seven events. Seven gold medals. Seven world records. Possibly the greatest single Olympic performance ever. But for American swimming legend and former Hoosier Mark Spitz, his unprecedented and unmatched achievement at the 1972 Munich Olympics simply represented the final chapter in his storied career. When Spitz looks back 30 years, he sees Munich as "the culmination of a journey of different events in my career." The string of Munich races he won - 100 and 200-meter butterfly, 100 and 200-meter freestyle, and three team relays - ended an incredible stretch to close his career.

Hoosiers can't make it 2 in a row

As the clock struck midnight on the IU field hockey team Tuesday, the young Hoosiers were faced with an important lesson: Success doesn't come overnight. Although IU is much deeper and more talented than in 2001, the Hoosiers could not follow up their season opening win. They lost to Maine 2-1. While the Hoosiers (1-1) could not pull out the victory, coach Amy Robertson did find several positives to take out of Tuesday's game.

Knight reaches settlement in assistant's suit

INDIANAPOLIS -- Bob Knight has agreed to pay $25,000 to a former assistant coach after signing an agreement in which he admitted to "shoving" Ron Felling "in anger," Felling's attorney said Tuesday.

James will play in NFL season opener

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts know Edgerrin James will play against Jacksonville on Sunday. Who assists James remains uncertain. The Colts found another running back Monday, claiming rookie James Mungro off waivers from the Detroit Lions, even as they awaited the arrival of rookie Ricky Williams.

Davenport waits out rain, advances to quarters

NEW YORK -- Lindsay Davenport spent the better part of Monday sitting by a window at the National Tennis Center while rain fell. Once play started, she rose to the occasion. Playing just her fifth tournament since knee surgery, Davenport moved into the U.S. Open quarterfinals by beating 13th-seeded Silvia Farina Elia of Italy 6-3, 6-1 in a match that started more than 7 hours late because of downpours.

Coach brings confidence

Last year at this time the women's cross country team faced a major dilemma. They had to deal with the loss of 2000 NCAA qualifier Allyson Hammond, who was out for the year with an injury. The team struggled and was unable to rebound from her injury and ultimately finished 9th in the Big Ten.

Oakland wins 19th straight

Miguel Tejada and the Oakland Athletics simply refuse to lose -- even when the degree of difficulty gets higher and higher. Tejada got his second straight game-ending hit as the A's matched the longest winning streak in AL history with their 19th straight victory Monday, beating the Kansas City Royals 7-6.

Spain remains undefeated

INDIANAPOLIS - Spain used the lessons it learned against Turkey a year ago to remain undefeated in the World Championships. Spain played poorly on defense and lost last year to Turkey in the European Championships in an ugly game that saw Spanish coach Javier Imbroda ejected and several players fighting late in the game.

Hoosiers ready for home opener

This time of year, IU students are adjusting to new things. The field hockey team's no different. Winning is a new concept the Hoosiers want to keep building on when they face Maine (1-1) 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. IU opened its season with a victory against Miami (Ohio) last week.

IU players earn Big Ten honors

The move from tight end to defensive tackle has already paid dividends for senior Kris Dielman and the Hoosier defense. Dielman was instrumental in IU's 25-17 win over William and Mary. For his efforts in that game, Dielman was named Defensive Player of the Week by the Big Ten conference.

Hoosiers escape in season opening win

As William & Mary quarterback Dave Corley scrambled to his left with time expiring in Saturday's game against IU, his shoe came flying off in the opposite direction, hitting the ground with an inconsequential thud. His pass to wide receiver Danny Wade was equally harmless. IU junior cornerback Antonio Watson swatted the ball to the ground, preserving IU's 25-17 victory in the Hoosiers' debut.

Defense makes plays down the stretch

With 1:24 remaining in the game on Saturday, junior cornerback Antonio Watson was called for a pass interference penalty, putting William and Mary 15 yards out from the potential game-tying score. Instead of losing his cool, Watson came up with two huge defensive plays in the final 11 seconds and led IU to its first opening game win since 1999.

Team falls in opener, defeats Missouri

The Hoosiers won their first regular season contest under new coach Mick Lyon Sunday at the Nike Tiger Invitational. After falling to Kentucky 3-1 in the tournament opener, the team responded against Missouri with a double overtime victory. Junior Shelly Gruszka tallied the first goal for the Hoosiers on an assist from freshman Kristen Zmijewski in the ninth minute of play. Missouri responded in the 37th minute with a goal by junior Adriene Davis. The remainder of regulation proved a defensive effort on both sides as time expired with the two teams knotted at one apiece.

Second-half offensive explosion propels IU

What a difference a year makes. The IU field hockey team opened their season Saturday in dominating fashion defeating the Miami Redhawks 4-1 in Oxford, Ohio. The Hoosiers, who struggled to a 1-16 record in 2001, got over the .500 mark for the first time in the program's three year history. After losing the past two years to Miami, head coach Amy Robertson's club exacted revenge on the Redhawks with an offensive blitzkreig in the second half that tied a Hoosier record for most goals scored in a game.

Hoosiers use strong pack for victory

For the men's cross country team's corps of freshmen, the first meet of their career turned out to be a successful one. Four redshirt freshmen finished in the top seven of the team and all seven varsity runners placed in the top ten of the Indiana Open Friday at the IU Cross Country Course. In an effort to dominate their home opener, the team used a tight pack in which their top runner and seventh runner were separated by only 37 seconds. Redshirt freshman John Jefferson debuted as the number one runner for the team in the seven-kilometer race, with senior Bart Phariss slightly behind him. Jefferson finished with a second place overall finish of 22:29.10, and Phariss placed third .2 seconds behind Jefferson.

Team sweeps tournament

The women\'s volleyball teams began the 2002 season with a perfect record by winning all three matches in the Northern Illinois Best Western Invitational. IU defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies Saturday to sweep the tournament. "I think the biggest plus (Saturday) was that we pushed through," Indiana head coach Katie Weismiller said in a press release. "Offensively, our team has been on all weekend. Victoria's (Zimmerman) done a nice job running the offense and our passing has been very, very, good."

7-footer no match for Team USA

INDIANAPOLIS -- The U.S. team found itself in an unusual situation Saturday night. For the first time in the three-day old World Basketball Championships, the team had to dig itself out of a hole against Houston Rocket draftee Yao Ming and his China team. After being down by as much as 12 points, the U.S. team battled back and won 84-65. The U.S. team, 3-0 in its quest for the gold medal in the Championships, was aided greatly by its defense after faltering offensively.
