Team returns from Maui with goals accomplished

The IU men's basketball team traveled to the Maui Invitational last week with a couple of goals in mind. One was to win the tournament championship; the other was to prove that they had been underrated in the polls. The No. 20 Hoosiers flew back to the mainland Wednesday having accomplished those goals, with the Maui Invitational trophy in tow. It was the fourth time IU participated in the tournament, but the first time they won the championship.

IU explodes in 2nd half for 4- start

It looked as if the IU men's basketball team left its sharp-shooting offense in Maui after going 0-5 in a two-minute span against North Texas Sunday at Assembly Hall. Or not. The Hoosiers went into halftime with a small lead, but exploded in the second half en route to an 84-58 win. IU is 4-0 for the third time in the last five years. "We knew they were going to be a tough team," senior forward Jeff Newton said. "They put up a lot of shots, like in their last game, they shot 73 shots.

Hoosier wrestlers finish strong

In the Missouri Open, their first tournament of the year, the Hoosiers notched three top-five finishes. Sophomore Pat DeGain (197-pounds), and juniors Coyte Cooper (141-pounds), and Ty Matthews (heavyweight) finished first, second, and fourth respectively in their weight classes Sunday. DeGain, Cooper, and Matthews were all ranked in the top 20 of their weight classes in preseason publications and, on Sunday, they showed why.

Diver excels, eyes IU records

Challenges a person undertakes can often make them tougher. Junior co-captain diver Marc Carlton has been through many challenges throughout his diving career here at IU. Carlton came to IU as a four-time high school All-American selection and a four-time New York state champion. He also placed fourth on the one-meter at the 1999 Junior National Championships.

IU hosts Notre Dame in second round NCAA play

In recent years, November and December is when the IU men's soccer team puts it all together and begins another march to the College Cup. After being ousted from the Big Ten Championships by Penn State on penalty kicks, the Hoosiers were forced to wait and see where they would be placed in the NCAA Tournament. No. 5 IU (14-3-2) still received a first round bye and will host No. 21 Notre Dame (12-5-3) 7 p.m. Wednesday in second round action, but the Hoosiers were snubbed of a top eight seed which would offer more home field opportunities.

A tale of two teams

Hoosiers have hot hands in Hawaii

LAHAINA, Hawaii -- Mike Davis was disappointed in what people were expecting out of his Indiana team coming off the loss to Maryland in last season's national championship game. "Too low, too low," he said of his team's preseason rankings following Monday's 84-71 victory over Massachusetts in the opening round of the Maui Invitational.

IU loses bucket in blowout loss

WEST LAFAYETTE -- In the second half of Saturday's battle for the Old Oaken Bucket, Purdue decided to turn a game of football into a game of "keep away." The Boilermakers' plan worked, as they held onto the ball for nearly 23 minutes in the second half en route to a 34-10 victory. Purdue's ability to control the tempo of the game stemmed from a combination of effective running and passing, and an uncanny ability to convert in third and fourth down situations.

Hopes for post-season play remain alive

The end of the 2002 Hoosier volleyball regular season looms ever closer as IU is looking to capture an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament. This weekend pitted the Hoosiers against the highly touted Minnesota Golden Gophers Friday and the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday. The No. 6 Minnesota squad lived up to their billing by sweeping IU 3-0. But, IU did not leave the weekend empty handed as it overpowered Iowa 3-1.

Weekend wins move IU up in standings

Saturday's second period against Ferris State took nearly an hour to complete, but it was over too quickly for IU. The Hoosiers began the period down 0-2. Four minutes into the second, IU junior forward Bob Pesavento received an elbowing penalty and the IU bench received another penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving FSU a two minute three-on-five advantage.

Freshmen show talents

An assumption about basketball is that experience is invaluable. While that is true, the energy youth brings should not be underestimated. The IU women's basketball team received vigor and quality play from its freshmen this past weekend to claim the championship of the Hampton Inn/Fazoli's Classic. The freshmen foursome of Cyndi Valentin, Angela Hawkins, Brigett Branson and Kali Kullberg greatly contributed to the Hoosiers ninth Classic title.

Team hopes for national impact

The IU Women's Cross Country team will head to Terre Haute today for their first NCAA Championship appearance since 1990. Junior Audrey Giesler said she is pleased with how much more competitive the team is this year.

No. 15 team heads to Nationals

Today the No. 15 men's cross country team heads to Terre Haute to take on the best in the nation at the NCAA Championships. The team earned an at-large bid to the meet after a fourth place finish at the Great Lakes Regional in West Lafayette last weekend. Coach Robert Chapman said the team should be around 15th place if they run similar to their race at Regionals, but the team hopes to finish in the top 10. The team race is so deep that if they do not have a great race, they could fall back to around 20th, he said.

Unbeaten streak reaches five at Invite

This weekend the Hoosiers took to the pool and continued their undefeated streak. The No. 13 ranked Hoosiers, winners of five in a row, defeated No. 19 Miami (Fla.), Tennessee, Arkansas, Clemson, Evansville, New Mexico, and Cincinnati, with the second place team trailing by 245.5 points at the Indiana Open Invitational. IU hosted the event, a three-day competition, which ended early Sunday night. IU started off slowly, finishing fifth in the 200-free relay with the team of senior Anne Williams, junior Meghan Medendorp, and sophomores Erin Smith and Tammy Kostner. IU's B-relay finished tenth with a time of 1:38.60.

Team wins Classic tourney

The women's basketball team proved this weekend at the Hampton Inn/Fazoli's Classic tournament that they are not a team to be ignored. Their 90-34 win over Wofford marked the most one-sided victory for the Hoosiers since 1991. If that wasn't enough, the Hoosiers came back to the court Saturday evening to defeat Ball State 103-95 in a double overtime game that named the 2-0 Hoosiers winners of the tournament.

Purdue offense controls game, IU falters

The Hoosiers didn't have enough time on Saturday to overcome their 17-3 halftime deficit and lost to Purdue 34-10. The Boilermakers won back the Old Oaken Bucket by keeping a tired Hoosier defense on the field most of the second half. IU (3-9, 1-7) struggled running the ball early and led to three punts on their opening three drives. Meanwhile, Purdue (6-6, 4-4) got on the board on their first drive with a 60-yard pass from freshman Brandon Kirsch to junior John Standeford.

Hoosiers win Indiana Invitational

The IU men's swimming and diving team hosted the annual Indiana Invitational this weekend at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The undefeated Hoosiers won the event with a score of 1,149 points followed by University of Cincinnati in second, Clemson University taking third, University of Evansville placing fourth, and the University of Miami (Fla.) finishing in fifth place.

Hoosiers start season at Maui Invitational

The IU men's basketball team starts their season in paradise tonight. The No. 21 Hoosiers traveled to Hawaii Saturday morning to prepare for tonight's game against Massachusetts. The two teams meet in the first round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. The game, which will be aired on ESPN2 at 5 p.m. tonight, marks the fourth time that IU has played in the Maui Invitational. The last time the Hoosiers were in Hawaii was 1998, when the team fell in the championship game. Overall, IU is 5-4 in the tournament.

Team takes on Big Ten rivals on the road

The 2002 women's volleyball team is just two weeks away from learning if they will be eligible for its first NCAA Tournament bid in three years. Running on an 18-10 overall record and 8-8 in the Big Ten, the last two weekends are important for the Hoosiers. This weekend will pit the Hoosier volleyball team against the No. 6 Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday and the Iowa Hawkeyes Saturday.

Wrestlers ready for Missouri

After spending nearly two months practicing against each other in the IU wrestling room in the Assembly Hall basement, the wrestling team is eager to get the 2002-03 season underway this Sunday. The Hoosiers will travel to Columbia, Mo. this weekend to participate in the Missouri Open where they are eager to compete.
