Two water polo players named All-American After reaching the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament, two Hoosiers from the water polo team -- senior Kristin Stanford and sophomore Krista Peterson -- were named as All-Americans by the American Water Polo Coaches Association. Stanford managed to make the second-team squad, while Peterson was named as an honorable mention.

Nittany Lions end Hoosier season

The Hoosier baseball season came to a close Friday afternoon at the hands of the Penn State Nittany Lions. IU was beaten 8-4 by Penn State to end their season with a 34-22 record. The Nittany Lions moved on to win against Michigan in Saturday's first game before losing to Ohio State in the second game.

Top recruits, AAU teams battle in Bloomington

This weekend's third annual Nike Memorial Day Classic provided a few surprises for those in attendance, including a commitment by Robert Vaden, a 6-foot-6-inch guard out of Pike High School in Indianapolis, to play for the Hoosiers in 2004.

2003 Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS -- While inexperience showed at times for rookie drivers in the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500, nerves did not, as the majority of rookies not only finished the race, but did so in remarkable fashion. Six of the nine rookies finished in the top 15 of the Indy 500 Sunday. Tora Takagi, driver of the No. 12 Pioneer car, finished fifth and was the highest-placing rookie. Takagi described his success at the Brickyard and the privilege of leading the rookie field. "I am very happy with this result in my first Indy 500 race," Takagi said. "My car was always fast this month. I wish I could have finished about two places higher, because I think we were capable of finishing at least third. But overall, I am happy with being the highest-finishing rookie in the race. That is a great honor."

Al Unser Jr. regaining control in battle

INDIANAPOLIS -- Al Unser Jr. always thought he was in control. On the track, he was a champion. Off it, he enjoyed the good times. His life changed forever on the morning of July 9, 2002. After a night of drinking in Indianapolis, Unser was arrested after his girlfriend accused him of hitting her and leaving her on the side of the highway after an argument. He spent a night in jail and his mugshot was published in newspapers.

Big Ten Championship wins in sight men's and women's teams

IU faces Northwestern in regular season finale

The IU baseball team takes on the Northwestern Wildcats this weekend in what will be the Hoosiers' final series before the Big Ten tournament. The four-game series begins Friday, leading into a doubleheader Saturday and the series finale Sunday. All games will be played at Sembower Field, with Friday's game starting at 3 p.m., Saturday's doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. and Sunday's finale at 1 p.m.

Woods ties for 29th; Harrington beats Bjorn in playoff

Accomplishments ran amok at the Big Ten Championships in Minnesota this weekend. The Hoosier men's and women's track teams placed among the top four in the conference championships. Such an impressive display came from remarkable individual performances by both teams.

Big Ten Tourney bid sealed

After the IU baseball team sealed a spot in the Big Ten Tournament Friday and a wash-out Saturday, the Hoosiers battled the Northwestern Wildcats Sunday at home. IU beat the Wildcats 7-0 on Friday, as junior pitcher Chris Behrens took the complete-game victory, allowed only five hits and three walks, and struck out a career-best seven batters. Sophomore Ryan Parker led the IU offensive attack with a two-for-four performance and a two-run homerun in the third inning to give the Hoosiers a 4-0 lead. IU had no errors and amassed five stolen bases.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Twelve hours after one of the franchise's biggest victories, the Detroit Pistons were back on the practice court Saturday, defying the skeptics again. With barely any time to celebrate, or even sleep, following Friday night's series-clinching overtime victory at Philadelphia, the Pistons had no trouble getting motivated for the New Jersey Nets. The Nets won the matchup 96-94 in overtime Sunday.
