Non-conference schedule announced

The 2003-2004 Hoosier basketball team will have its hands full in non-conference bouts as IU will face numerous teams that made it into post-season play. Well-known teams such as Kentucky, Missouri, Notre Dame, Wake Forest and Xavier will face the Hoosiers out of conference. While the Big Ten schedule has yet to be set, coach Mike Davis is sure that IU's non-conference opponents will be formidable. "Six of our first eight games are against teams that made the NCAA Tournament, and three of those teams (Kentucky, Notre Dame and Butler) made the Sweet 16," Davis said in a press release. While they are going to face some tough opponents, this is no change for the Hoosiers, as their schedule has ranked amongst the top eight in the nation in Sagarin Ratings schedule strength for the past five seasons. Davis hopes that a schedule with such elite opponents will drive his players to train harder during the offseason.

Bonds might be only one in 500-500 club

SAN FRANCISCO -- A long moment passed before Barry Bonds recognized his latest achievement. It will be a whole lot longer before anyone matches it. By stealing second base in the 11th inning of the San Francisco Giants' game Monday night, Bonds founded the 500-500 club. Bonds was focused on a tied game, but the steadily rising cheers from the crowd at Pacific Bell Park alerted him: he had just become the first player to hit 500 homers and steal 500 bases in his career.

If money can't buy love

Have no illusion about whom LeBron James is playing for. He certainly won't. Last year, his mother took out a sizable loan and bought him an H2 Hummer for his 18th birthday. For months afterward, she was all he talked about. Last month, a shoe company gave James $90 million to wear its sneakers until 2010. All of a sudden he turns up on HBO and says, "Nike is my family."

Lennox Lewis wins bloody battle

LOS ANGELES -- His night in the ring was long since over, and Lennox Lewis and his people were still working hard. Vitali Klitschko was tough enough, but now there was some serious explaining to do. Lewis was still the heavyweight champion, but that and another $10 million or so in his bank account were the only things he could feel good about Saturday night.

Neilson dies at 69

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Roger Neilson, a Hall of Famer who was the head coach of eight NHL teams and established one of the longest resumes in league history, died Saturday. He was 69. He had been battling skin and bone cancer.

Senior earns shot at IAFF

Last weekend at the NCAA Championships, senior Rose Richmond failed to make the long jump final after claiming second place at the Indoor Championships. Her contribution to the IU 4x100 relay team helped the squad net a fifth-place finish, but this could only mildly assuage her pain.

Mike Tyson wounded in brawl

NEW YORK -- Mike Tyson was released from a Brooklyn police precinct Saturday afternoon, hours after his arrest on assault charges following a brawl with two men outside a hotel. The former heavyweight champion, who was charged with assault in the third degree, a misdemeanor, walked silently past reporters standing outside the 84th Precinct in a driving rain.

Hoosier slugger drafted

Vasili Spanos was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 11th round of the June 3 MLB draft, making him the 332nd overall pick and the third Hoosier taken in the last two years. Spanos had the kind of numbers that are hard to overlook, and it appears that Oakland now has a bona fide slugger in their farm system. Why would Oakland, or any other team for that matter, be impressed enough with Spanos to use a first-day draft pick on him? Well, for anyone who hasn't noticed, he has been putting up impressive numbers during his Hoosier career, which climaxed in a great senior campaign -- leading the Big Ten in virtually every offensive category. Spanos was the leader in the conference in batting average (.434, which was 40 points higher than the next best average), home runs with eight, on-base percentage (.525) and slugging percentage (.778). Spanos was named to the first-team All Big Ten for the second straight year and was named recently to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Mideast Region second team.

IU athletes in Championship

Arkansas and LSU take championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Aleen Bailey completed a sprinting sweep in the NCAA track and field championships Saturday night, defeating LSU's Muna Lee in the 200 meters, just as she had a day earlier in the 100. But the Jamaican speedster, who almost single-handedly kept defending champion South Carolina in contention for the team title, could only watch as LSU pulled away for its 13th team crown. In the men's competition, Alistair Cragg clinched Arkansas' 10th team title, its first since a string of eight straight championships ended in 1999, by winning the 5,000.

Athlete gets NCAA win in javelin

Senior Irina Kharun lived up to her top-seed billing Friday at the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., by dominating the javelin event and setting an American collegiate record. Kharun said she remembered her father's advice and dedicated her final throw to Coach Randy Heisler.

Washington coach fights decision on gambling

MEDINA, Wash. -- Rick Neuheisel maintains he did not break NCAA rules when he gambled on college basketball tournaments and believes he should keep his job as Washington's football coach. Neuheisel addressed reporters Saturday at his lakeside home, two days after athletic director Barbara Hedges announced her decision to fire him.

Schumacher wins Canadian Grand Prix

MONTREAL - Michael Schumacher took a long swig of champagne, then sprayed some on his younger brother. Finally back on top of the Formula One standings, Schumacher was ready to celebrate. Schumacher won his fourth race of the season and finally passed Kimi Raikkonen for the lead in the driver standings by beating his brother, Ralf, in the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday.

All-American Karen Dennison plays with the pros

Junior All-American Karen Dennison entered the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic as the only amateur in a field of 144 golfers and one of two who had earned a sponsor's exemption. Thirty-six holes later, Dennison couldn't make the cut with a 6-over-par 78. Overall, Dennison carded a 153 and missed the cut by eight strokes.

Sosa's suspension cut to 7 after appeal

NEW YORK -- Sammy Sosa's suspension for using a corked bat was reduced Wednesday to seven games by major league baseball, which accepted his explanation that he simply made a mistake.
