Athletics deficit decreases by $1.41 million in 1 year

The IU Athletic Department's deficit stands at $1.79 million, a decrease of $1.41 million from last year, according to the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act submitted to the NCAA Oct. 15. The 25 page filed report, narrowed down to 11 pages open to the public, is a compilation of data comparing men's and women's sports financial and non-financial aspects.

Yankees wait out rain to take 2-1 Series lead

MIAMI -- For the longest time, this had all the makings of another heartbreaker for Mike Mussina. Down early. Hardly any run support. A rainy night. And yet somehow, the ace who could never quite win these games won Game 3 of the World Series. Mussina outpitched young ace Josh Beckett and the New York Yankees broke it open late, beating the Florida Marlins 6-1 Tuesday night for a 2-1 edge. Derek Jeter doubled and scored the go-ahead run on Hideki Matsui's single in the eighth inning, then Bernie Williams hit his record 19th postseason homer to clinch it in the ninth. By then, Mussina's work was done. Mariano Rivera finished it off in rapid fashion, closing with two innings as the Yankees won before a crowd of 65,731 that had mostly left by the final out. Now, after their second consecutive victory, the Yankees will try to take firm hold of the Series behind Roger Clemens.

Coach discusses athletes' behavior

IU football coach Gerry DiNardo said Tuesday that three players are involved in an IU Police Department investigation into long-distance phone fraud, but he does not anticipate any student-athletes will be ineligible for Saturday's game against Ohio State. DiNardo said one of those players "involved to the highest degree (in the fraud case) was dismissed over the summer."

IU athletics turns to Ticketmaster

Judge says Bryant must stand trial

EAGLE, Colo. -- Kobe Bryant must stand trial on a charge of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old resort worker, a judge ruled Monday, clearing the way for a celebrity trial the likes of which hasn't been seen since O.J. Simpson. Eagle County Judge Frederick Gannett said prosecutors presented enough evidence Bryant might have committed the crime June 30. The Los Angeles Lakers guard could face a life sentence if convicted. His next appearance, in district court, is set for Nov. 10.

Men's and women's teams sweep Evansville

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams got their seasons started on a positive note Saturday, as both posted victories against in-state rival Evansville at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center, 164-116 and 183-104, respectively. Freshman Colin Russell led the way for the men, winning three events for the Hoosiers, including the 1000-yard free-style, the 50-yard freestyle, and the 100-yard breaststroke. Russell, a native of Canada, was not surprised with the way he performed in his first intercollegiate meet.

Hoosiers fall in heartbreaker at home

IU scratched and battled for over two hours and 255 points worth of volleyball Saturday night. Despite one of its better efforts of the season, the team fell just short losing the match to Wisconsin 29-31, 31-29, 30-19, 27-30, 15-12.

Cubs fans have varied views of 'curse'

CHICAGO -- The ivy along the outfield wall at Wrigley Field was an uncharacteristic red during the Cubs' loss to the Florida Marlins last week. The rumors about the "Billy Goat Curse" have been flying around ever since. The Billy Goat Curse has roots back to the 1945 World Series, the last time the Cubs were in the final series of the season. The goat was not allowed in the stadium as it was in previous years for good luck. The owner of the goat that put a curse on the Cubs said they would never be in the World Series again.

The IU women's cross country teams traveled to Waterloo, Iowa, Saturday for the Pre-NCAA cross country meet. The meet allows teams the opportunity to compete on this season's NCAA National Cross Country Championship course against many of the top teams from around the United States one month before the actual national championship takes place.

Vikings conquer Broncos with Moss' 10 catches

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Vikings can beat the NFL's top teams, too. Daunte Culpepper threw for 277 yards in his return to the lineup, Minnesota's defense knocked Steve Beuerlein out of the game, and the Vikings beat the Denver Broncos 28-20 Sunday.

Basketball is finally here

Madness doesn't even begin to describe the players and crowd Friday night. Only a few hours before the public was released into the gym for Midnight Madness, one could have heard a pin drop on the court. But come 12:01 a.m., Assembly Hall exploded with screaming fans. "So many people came here to support us," freshman forward Patrick Ewing Jr. said. "There's nothing like it." What really got the crowd pumped was the slam-dunk contest. Senior center George Leach, Ewing Jr., senior forward Jason Stewart, junior guard Donald Perry and freshman guard Roderick Wilmont all took their best shots at pleasing a panel of judges from the Student Athletic Board. Leach led the group of slam-dunkers with an impressive one-hand dunk, but Ewing Jr. showed him up by hanging from the basket with his arm in the net. The second time around, Leach got a little encouragement from the crowd before attempting his next couple of dunks, but was unsuccessful at making the basket.

Team hopes to add 5th win to streak

Prior to the current winning streak, the men's soccer team had one victory in its previous eight matches. But IU has rolled off four victories in a row, and welcomes the Ohio State Buckeyes at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers (6-3-4, 3-0-1 Big Ten) have completed the road portion of their Big Ten schedule and three of the wins in the current streak have been away from home.

Hoosiers to compete at Iowa

The IU men's and women's cross country teams travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Saturday to compete in the Pre-NCAA meet. Competing in Cedar Rapids are seven of the top 10 ranked women's teams from the FinishLynx/Women's Cross Country Coaches Association poll. Last Friday, the women finished second in the Auburn Invitational in Auburn, Ala. Senior Audrey Giesler led the way for the Hoosiers finishing fifth with a time of 17:50.6.

IU grad part of nationwide tour

INDIANAPOLIS -- During her time at IU, Wendy Chioji never rode in the Little 500. Until 1993 she never considered herself a cyclist. But this week, Chioji and 25 other cyclists, all cancer survivors, are riding across America as part of the Tour of Hope. Thursday morning, 2,000 miles into their journey from Los Angeles to Washington D.C., Chioji found herself on stage at Conseco Fieldhouse joining five-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong and fellow Tour of Hope rider Steven Friedman.

Purdue Invitational next on dockett for IU

While junior Ryana Recht was participatiing in last week's qualifying rounds of the Icy Hot American Championships, the rest of Hoosiers were at home waiting to hit the courts. This weekend will be their first chance at the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette.
