Hoosiers starting 2 top pitchers in effort to get above .500

The IU baseball team will travel to Millington, Tenn., this weekend to compete in the Service Academy Classic tournament at USA Stadium. The Hoosiers will play Murray State Friday, Kentucky Saturday and end the road trip with Navy Sunday. The players emphasized that every game is important but whenever Kentucky is the opponent there is extra incentive.

League meet at hostile Purdue

The Hoosiers men's swimming team will travel to Purdue this weekend to compete in the Big Ten Championships. IU finished the regular season with a 5-7 overall record and was 3-4 in Big Ten play. The team said they hoped they have hit their peak just in time. Among the bright spots for the Hoosiers is freshman Colin Russell, who is coming off a season in which he consistently finished first and second in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. Diving will be the one factor that puts the Hoosiers at a true disadvantage. Throughout the year, they have been saddled with having only one eligible diver in junior Ryan Fagan.

Hoosiers begin quest 'to be best team in Midwest'

Room service and wake-up calls must be common for the Hoosiers softball team (5-4). The team, which is fresh off trips to Florida and Texas this month, is traveling to Illinois to compete in Southern Illinois' Kay Brechtelsbauer Classic. The Hoosiers travel to Carbondale, Ill., to face Indiana State (4-4), Southern Illinois (5-2) and an untested Harvard team (0-0) this weekend. The team feels it has something to prove this weekend and looks to earn a few wins against tough competition. "We're trying to be the best team in the Midwest -- that's our goal," said IU coach Sara Hayes Nottger. "ISU being in-state and Southern Illinois being in the area gives us the opportunity to compete with the best in the Midwest."

'Last chance' to make NCAA meet

The IU women's swimming and diving team takes to the water again this weekend in the IU "Last Chance" Invitational in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center at the SRSC. The Hoosiers host Ohio State, Illinois and the University of Indianapolis in the last meet before the NCAA Championships. For the Hoosiers, the "Last Chance" meet is a great way to show their skills before their trek to the NCAA titles.

IU returns to action in Bucknell Invite

With nearly three weeks gone by, IU coach Barry King's squad is anxious to get back to action this weekend at the Bucknell Invitational. This weekend, the Hoosiers will matchup against east coast programs for the first time this season. Among the teams, IU will play Hartwick and Providence, both considered to be east coast powerhouse water polo programs. In addition, the Hoosiers will take on George Washington and Harvard in Lewisburg, Penn., this Saturday and Sunday.

Regular season finale Sunday

After suffering through a 1-8 record in the last nine games, the end is finally near for the Hoosiers. IU will enter its final game against the No. 22 Michigan State Spartans Sunday at home. The 11-15 Hoosiers will have their hands full against MSU, as the Spartans come into the game with a 19-6 overall record. The Spartans are currently on a two-game losing streak, suffering losses at the hands of Ohio State and No. 4 Purdue.

Hoosiers drop fourth game in a row, 7 of last 8

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern used clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch to defeat IU 63-59 Wednesday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Northwestern (13-12, 7-6 Big Ten) made 13 of 15 freethrows in the final 4:38 to seal the victory. The Wildcats only made one field goal in that span, and the Hoosiers were able to cut it to two points with 3.1 seconds remaining. But it was not enough, and IU (12-13, 6-8) is now in the midst of a four-game losing streak. "It's tough when you keep coming up two or three points short every time," sophomore guard Bracey Wright said. "The biggest thing we can't do right now is give up. I'm glad that we didn't, and for however many games left we're going to have, we've got to fight to the end." IU trailed 32-22 at the half, but went on a 17-7 run to open the second half. The Hoosiers tied up the game at 39 a piece with 11:35 left when sophomore guard Marshall Strickland hit a three-pointer. The Wildcats would stretch their lead to as many as eight, but the Hoosiers wouldn't go away.

Replay coming to Big Ten

Big Ten football officials will have life a little easier next season. The use of experimental replay during Big Ten football games has been approved by the NCAA Division 1 Championships/ Competition Cabinet, following recommendations made by the NCAA Football Rules Committee. IU coach Gerry DiNardo has supported the idea of replay since he first came into the league in 2002. "I was in favor of it," DiNardo said. "I'm glad (the Big Ten) did it. I've been in favor of it right from the beginning."

Chief Illiniwek decision put on hold

URBANA, Ill. -- A University of Illinois trustee said other issues at the school have caused her to shelve plans to reintroduce a resolution calling for retirement of the Chief Illiniwek symbol at the board's meeting next month.

Wright looks for answers during shooting slump

Sophomore guard Bracey Wright seems to have all the right award nominations and accomplishments attached to his name. He was recently named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 10 First Team. He is a finalist for two national college basketball player of the year awards -- the Rupp Award and the Naismith Award. Wright is only 49 points away from becoming the 39th player in IU history to score 1,000 career points. Ohio State junior forward Terence Dials even noticed the effect that Wright has on the IU team and said after IU's win against Ohio State that Wright was the heart and soul of the team.

Hoosiers tame Tigers to earn first victory

The Hoosiers opened at home Monday in victorious fashion, toppling the Tigers of DePauw, 6-3. The victory marks the team's first victory of the season, after losing to Southeastern Louisiana this weekend. The Hoosiers are now 1-3 on the year.

Hoosiers struggle at Central District Classic

The IU women's golf team started off its spring season at the Central District Classic in Parrish, Fla., against a highly competitive field. Ten of the 15 teams in the field, including the No. 39 ranked Hoosiers, were in the Golfweek Top 50.

Peterson wins gold on junior national team

Returning for her third season, junior Krista Peterson has had a big impact early on for the Hoosiers. She has helped the squad jump out to a 5-2 record, all of which has come against top 20 teams in the nation.

With regular season over, IU looks to reload

The end of the regular season marks a transition period for the IU wrestling team. With Sunday's 19-14 loss to Michigan State, the team finished the regular season on a five-match losing streak but looks forward to the win-or-go-home Big Ten Tournament that awaits.

One last road win can begin to save season

The Northwestern Athletics Web site has put out a "fan advisory" for tonight's game at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. It's one of their most popular games of the season, and if things go the Wildcats' way like they did last year, they will pick up another home win, this one against IU.

Little Fifty date set

Get the running shoes ready, and start training. The 2004 Little Fifty will take place Sunday, April 18, the IU Student Foundation has announced. Because of the success the inaugural race garnered last year, IUSF has placed the race as the kickoff for Little 500 week festivities, moving it a week closer to Little 500, compared to last year.

DiNardo's field staff full after departures

The reshuffling of the IU football staff has begun to settle. IU coach Gerry DiNardo completed his field staff Monday, promoting Steve Addazio to offensive coordinator, on top of his offensive line coaching duties. Last week, DiNardo promoted defensive line coach Joe Cullen to the defensive coordinator position. The only position still open is director of football operations, formerly occupied by Dino Mangiero, named linebackers coach last week. Also Monday, DiNardo named Bob McConnell wide receiver's coach.

Jumper looks to break own school records

IU senior Lauren Chesnut began her collegiate jumping career at George Mason University in Virginia and transferred to IU after her sophomore season. Chesnut made her mark in the Big Ten immediately as she set the IU school record in the triple jump with a leap of 13.02 meters.

Kline has surgery on right knee

IU sophomore forward Sean Kline underwent knee surgery Monday to repair the damage he suffered Feb. 14 at Purdue. The Huntington, Ind., native averaged 7.1 points per game and four rebounds in 22 games of action. It was announced Feb. 16 Kline would miss the rest of the season due to the knee injury and the required surgery.

Hoosiers look to rebound

Coming off a tough three-game road trip where the Hoosiers dropped three games to Southeastern Louisiana, the IU baseball team will make its home debut Tuesday against the DePauw Tigers. With the weather not cooperating lately, the team has had to practice inside during the entire preseason.
