IU rebounds to road win

ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- IU sophomore guard Marshall Strickland said it's anybody's ballgame when you're talking about Big Ten basketball. While history shows that it's difficult to play on the road in the Big Ten, Sunday's game in Ann Arbor was clearly one for the Hoosiers. After a 34-point loss on the road to Wisconsin, IU bounced back from the loss and defeated the Michigan Wolverines, 59-57. IU made 42.9 percent of its field goals and made five of its six free throw attemps. "Anytime you get a road win in the Big Ten, it's like getting two wins," IU coach Mike Davis said.

Hoosiers drop 3 of 5 over break

IU coach Mike Davis has said all along that he wanted his team to be 7-4 as the Hoosiers headed into conference play. The Hoosiers entered the semester break at 4-3, and with three of four at home, seemed on their way to that goal. But IU couldn't get it done, and Tuesday's loss to Wisconsin in their Big Ten opener dropped the Hoosiers to 6-6 on the season.

Gibbs to coach in D.C. again

Coughlin to lead Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Eleven years after they first courted him, the New York Giants finally introduced Tom Coughlin as their coach. "It really struck me from an emotional standpoint how very deep my emotions go toward this position and this particular franchise," Coughlin said at a news conference Wednesday, a day after signing a four-year, $12 million contract.

Green named Arizona coach

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Dennis Green is hoping his no-nonsense approach to coaching turns around the Arizona Cardinals' history of almost no success. The former Minnesota Vikings coach agreed to a four-year contract Wednesday night after an extended bargaining session via faxes and telephone calls between San Diego and team headquarters in Tempe.

Old teammates, foes meet again

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Defensive ends Mike Rucker and Grant Wistrom first met as high school sophomores playing against each other in Missouri. Rucker claims he used a hard hit to tackle Wistrom, then a tight end, for a loss. The two were later teammates at Nebraska, and will cross paths once again Saturday when Rucker and the Carolina Panthers play Wistrom and the St. Louis Rams in the divisional playoffs.

Hoosiers look to avoid early hole in Big Ten play

During the last two years, the Hoosiers have struggled on opponents' home courts, going 5-12 during that stretch. They have only one Big Ten win, coming against Iowa Feb. 19 of last year. The Hoosiers will have to reverse that trend against Michigan Sunday if they hope to avoid doing something they haven't done since the 1997-98 season: start the Big Ten 0-2.

Near-perfect season for the Mannings

Believe in Blue

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts expect cold and noise for their next game at Kansas City. They're confident they'll overcome both -- as well as the Chiefs. "Hopefully once we get in the stadium, we'll warm up and be fine," linebacker Marcus Washington said Wednesday. "We've been great on the road all year, so I think we'll be okay." Kansas City (13-3) has won 13 straight at Arrowhead Stadium, and teams that play home games in domes are just 11-32 when they venture into the frigid outdoors, come playoff time. Nevertheless, the Colts (13-4) have beaten the Chiefs in six straight games, four of those in Kansas City, and lead their overall series 8-6. Only one team with a dome, St. Louis in 1999, has won a Super Bowl.

IU splits weekend games

Junior guard Jenny DeMuth and sophomore guard Cyndi Valentin have been the keys to IU's success throughout the entire year, and Sunday's game against North Carolina State was no exception. DeMuth and Valentin finished the game with 45 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Fans brave snow and cold to cheer on team

Every other year, thousands of football fans invade Bloomington from Columbus, Ohio, to watch their Ohio State Buckeyes battle IU on the football field. This weekend the cars were headed in the other direction as Hoosier fans journeyed to Columbus to watch IU compete in a different brand of football -- that of the international variety.

Defense allows IU to hold on for win

Last weekend, IU lost a 14-point lead with seven minutes left, due in part to Missouri's tough defense down the stretch. Saturday it was IU's defense that helped the Hoosiers pull out a 62-50 win against Butler at Assembly Hall.

Hail to the Champions!

Neither rain nor sleet nor snow nor jet lag could stop the 2003 IU men's soccer team. No one could stop the players on the field either -- the Hoosiers are National Champions, finishing an improbable run with a 2-1 victory over the St. John's Red Storm.

THANK YOU COACH YEAGLEY

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It was Sept. 18, and IU had just lost a heartbreaker to Notre Dame in double overtime, 1-0. The players were dejected, and IU coach Jerry Yeagley said it was a game the Hoosiers should have won. That was IU's last loss of the season. In less then three months, Yeagley crafted a young team into an experienced team destined to send Yeagley out as a champion.
