Team looks ahead to Bucknell Invitational

After graduating a class of seven players last year, IU water polo coach Barry King was left with the challenge of bringing in a large recruiting class to replace the graduates. Returning this season for the Hoosiers is a group of 10 players -- only two of them going into their senior year.

Skating club competes on national level

Five months after becoming an official club sport at IU, the Figure Skating Club has begun to grow into its own on campus. Made up of only 10 competitive and five recreational members, the club's size is small by comparison with other universities, but has shown the drive and determination to compete with larger teams, said the club's founder freshman Katie Laughner.

The NBA just celebrated its All-Star Weekend with a dunk contest, the three point shootout, the Rookie-Sophomore game with Melo and LeBron and, of course, the actual All-Star game itself. But all we're hearing about is Alex Rodriguez and the damn Yankees.

IU finishes 10th at UCF/Rio Pinar Invite

For the first time since the Northern Intercollegiate golf tournament last September, the IU men's golf team did not finish first place. The Hoosiers entered the UCF/Rio Pinar Invitational, the opening tournament of the spring, ranked as high as No. 19, but were unable to overcome a lackluster first day effort and finished No. 10 in a field of 18. South Alabama took first place after a playoff against host Central Florida.

DiNardo loses coordinators

Last season, IU finished last in the Big Ten in scoring offense and No. 10 in scoring defense. Next season, new coordinators will be in place to continue the rebuilding process as former offensive coordinator, Al Borges, and former defensive coordinator, Tim Kish, have both accepted jobs at different schools. Borges joined Tommy Tuberville's staff at Auburn, as he was named the Tigers' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks' coach Friday. Kish was hired by Mike Stoops in late '03 to be the defensive line coach at Arizona.

Kline out for season

The Hoosiers' interior took a big blow Monday when IU coach Mike Davis said forward Sean Kline will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury he suffered in Saturday's loss to Purdue. The sophomore will have surgery on his right knee as soon as the swelling goes down. Kline was averaging 7.1 points per game and was pulling down four rebounds.

Sprinter competed at Millrose Games

An All-American the past two seasons in the outdoor 4 x 100-meter relay, IU junior sprinter Ara Towns traveled to New York City to compete in the prestigious Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden. Towns was one of seven collegiate athletes invited to run in the 60-meter dash.

Twin towers energize team

The stellar play of junior Jenny DeMuth and sophomore Cyndi Valentin allow the 6-foot-3 sophomore Angela Hawkins and 6-foot-7 freshman Sarah McKay to sli "under" the radar. What the duo lacks in high scoring averages, with both players scoring 6.2 points per game, the two make up for in defensive prowess and energy.

WEST LAFAYETTE -- If the IU men's basketball team was looking for love on Valentine's Day, West Lafayette was the last place they were going to find it. A game in which the Hoosiers picked up 26 fouls compared to the Boilermaker's 11, ended in Purdue's favor, 71-56. Purdue coach Gene Keady said he told his team it would be their biggest game of the year to see how they would handle the pressure. Sure enough, Purdue handled the pressure just like Keady wanted them to. They played with effort, and three different Boilermakers scored 17 points a piece.

Hoosiers dominated in 78-69 loss

IU put up 69 points Sunday, good for its largest point total in a Big Ten game this season, and also shot at an impressive 50 percent for its second-best shooting game of the season. Yet the scoring was just not enough as the Iowa Hawkeyes (14-9, 8-4 Big Ten) defeated IU (10-14, 3-10).

The IU men's tennis team traveled to Louisville in hopes of extending their winning streak to four matches but came up short against the Louisville Cardinals, 4-3. The loss dropped their record to 3-2 in the season.

'The Legend'

Forty-one years ago, only nine IU students showed up for coach Jerry Yeagley's inaugural club soccer meeting at the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Saturday night, at a banquet honoring the legendary coach's tenure at IU, more than 1,000 people -- including former and current players -- gathered to honor soccer's all-time winningest coach.

Hoosiers start spring season in Orlando

The IU men's golf team will return to competition today at the UCF/Rio Pinar Invitational in Orlando, Fla. The 18-team invitational marks the opening of the spring season for the Hoosiers, who are hoping to continue the success the fall season brought them. The Hoosiers closed out the 2003 fall season with three consecutive tournament titles and four consecutive first place finishes for junior Jeff Overton. Such performances have garnered the Hoosiers national attention.

Weekend drops IU to 1-5 in Big Ten

The IU wrestling team had an unsuccessful weekend, as it went 0-2 in Big Ten action. Friday night, No. 2 Michigan came to University Gym and beat the Hoosiers in a hard-fought match. IU also went down Sunday to in-state rival Purdue. The two losses move IU to 17-7 on the year and 1-5 in Big Ten play.

Foul trouble, Purdue free throws put IU in hole

WEST LAFAYETTE -- When IU and Purdue met Jan. 27 in Bloomington, the Boilermakers only got to the foul line twice in the game and missed both. Saturday was a completely different story, as Purdue (16-8, 6-5 Big Ten) made a season-high 24 free throws on its way to a 71-56 win in Mackey Arena.

Injury hurts second big man on team

WEST LAFAYETTE -- Since Dec. 1, four of IU's big men have had to sit out games, some due to injury and some for academic reasons. For one forward, it meant the rest of the season, for an IU center it was a month, for yet another forward it only meant one game.

Former Tour de France winner Marco Pantani found dead

RIMINI, Italy -- Prosecutors investigating the sudden death of 1998 Tour de France champion Marco Pantani are looking into whether medicine found in his hotel room had a role, officials said Sunday. News reports said an initial examination pointed to cardiac arrest as the cause.
