WEST LAFAYETTE -- The Hoosier football team suffered a spanking in the Old Oaken Bucket game Saturday as IU gave up 763 yards of total offense in a 63-24 thrashing at the hands of arch-rival Purdue. With the loss, the Hoosiers end a disappointing 2004 campaign at 3-8 and 1-7 in the Big Ten.

Repeat championship run starts against Michigan

With Thanksgiving break right around the corner, students are beginning to depart campus for their holiday destinations. IU men's soccer coach Mike Freitag hopes students can wait until after Tuesday night's NCAA Tournament second round game against Michigan to go home.

NEW YORK -- Ron Artest was suspended for the rest of the season Sunday as the NBA came down hard on three members of the Indiana Pacers for fighting with fans as a game against the Detroit Pistons degenerated into a melee.

WOMEN'S: IU hopes to place 3 runners in top-60

The IU women's cross country team will be planning to run as hard as the solid November ground tonight in Terre Haute at the NCAA Championships. "I just want them to cross the finish line and have nothing left at all," said IU coach Judy Wilson. "Championships call for championship performances."

Depending on when you read this, the IU men's cross country team might have finished its season in grand fashion. Scheduled for just after noon today, the No. 10 ranked Hoosiers will compete in the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute.

Season begins with loss to No. 8 Baylor

Halfway through the second half, the IU women's basketball team was in position to pull off an upset against No. 8 Baylor University, trailing only 39-34. Instead of making a run, the ice-cold shooting that had plagued IU all night continued, developing into a 60-47 loss to the Lady Bears.

Flood gates open in West Lafayette

WEST LAFAYETTE -- The Hoosiers came into the final game of the season against Purdue seeking revenge and the Old Oaken Bucket. Instead, what they got was an old-fashioned beat down and a long ride back to Bloomington following a 63-24 loss to the Boilermakers at Ross-Ade Stadium in front of 65,137 fans.

Artest out for rest of season

NEW YORK - Ron Artest was suspended for the rest of the season Sunday as the NBA came down hard on three members of the Indiana Pacers for fighting with fans as a game against the Detroit Pistons degenerated into a melee. Nine players from the teams were banned for a combined 143 games, including some of the harshest penalties the league has ever issued. Artest is the first player to be suspended for nearly an entire season for a fight during a game.

Manning lighting up league with TDs

INDIANAPOLIS -- If Peyton Manning has proved anything this season, it is that nothing is out of reach. He's already thrown five touchdowns in an NFL-record three games this season. He's thrown at least three TD passes six times and is on pace to shatter Dan Marino's seemingly untouchable single-season record of 48 TD passes.

CHICAGO -- Major League Baseball owners surprisingly did not vote Thursday on the proposed move of the Montreal Expos to Washington D.C. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said he still expected the move to take place, and said owners will vote on the deal by Dec. 6.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Lou Holtz will retire as coach at South Carolina after the season, The Associated Press learned Thursday night, apparently paving the way for Steve Spurrier to replace him. Holtz told his team before Thursday's practice that he was retiring, according to a source close to the program who spoke on condition of anonymity. All season, the 67-year-old Holtz said he was worn out and tired, and even said Spurrier would be a good choice to succeed him.

Hoosiers welcome Kentucky, Utah for Invitational After dropping one spot in the national polls, the No. 14-ranked IU men's swimming and diving team will attempt to bounce back from a disappointing loss by participating in the ninth annual Indiana Invitational. The Invitational, which will take place at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center from today through Sunday, is a 10-team competition.

Walking into the football locker room, it becomes evident after a few moments which game is the most important to IU: the game against arch-rival Purdue. On the wall hangs a clock that resembles something out of a "Mission Impossible" movie, counting down the seconds until the clash with the Boilermakers.

Every week senior Susan Hall plays soccer at Woodlawn Field in order to maintain her competitive edge as a midfielder for the IU women's club soccer team. During her four-year tenure with the team, Hall has continued to be stubborn in her love for soccer, a sport she has played since her days as an 8-year-old in northern Florida.

Veteran defenders expected to lead team

Despite a 2-1 loss in the Big Ten tournament last week, heads remained high after the announcement the IU men's soccer team would be seeded No. 2 in the NCAA tournament. Much of the reason for enthusiasm among the Hoosiers was the knowledge that their tournament fate lies in the hands of five men who have been there before -- the defense.

Reigning champs set sights

The uncertain future of where the NCAA men's soccer tournament selection committee would place the IU men's soccer team in the tournament was on the minds of the team members as they gathered to watch ESPNEWS' broadcast of the selection show Monday at The City Grille. The defending NCAA national champions made an early exit from the Big Ten tournament last Friday as Michigan State defeated the Hoosiers 2-1.
