Tennessee drops out of AP Top 25

Tennessee has gone from preseason No. 3 to not even receiving a vote in The Associated Press Top 25. The Volunteers (3-4) fell from the rankings Sunday for the first time in three years after losing 16-15 to South Carolina and old nemesis Steve Spurrier. No. 1 Southern California, No. 2 Texas and No. 3 Virginia Tech, all 8-0, hold the top three spots in the media poll for the sixth straight week. USC received 57 of 65 first-place votes, adding two from last week, and extending its record streak at No. 1 to 28 straight polls. The Trojans beat Washington State 55-13 on Saturday Texas received eight first-place votes, down two from last week, after having to rally from a 19-point deficit to beat Oklahoma State 47-28.

Road continues to bring Hoosiers trouble

Road travels were again hard on the IU women's volleyball team as it was defeated by Big Ten rivals Iowa and Minnesota over the weekend. Both squads held "Pack the House" nights against the Hoosiers, adding momentum to the competitive environment, and IU coach Katie Weismiller said feedback from the fans was astonishing.

Bears alone in 1st place in NFC North after 19-13 win

DETROIT -- The Detroit Lions were bailed out after one ill-advised Jeff Garcia play in the fourth quarter, then the Chicago Bears burned them on another in overtime. Garcia's across-the-body pass was picked off by Charles Tillman and returned 22 yards for a touchdown with 8:43 left in overtime Sunday, lifting Chicago atop the NFC North with a 19-13 win over Detroit.

Gophers topple No. 9 Hoosiers 167-137

The No. 9 IU men's swimming team fought a tough battle on the road at Minnesota, but came up short 163-137 despite an impressive diving performance. No. 11 Minnesota claimed a sum of nine titles at the meet while IU took seven.

Loukas leads No. 16 IU in 177.5 - 122.5 victory

The No. 16 IU women's swimming and diving team emerged with an impressive road win Saturday by defeating the No. 23 Minnesota Golden Gophers 177.5-122.5. The Hoosiers were able to respond appropriately to what IU coach Ray Looze called a "prize fight" between the two talented Big Ten teams.

Best race of season comes just in time for team

What a difference a month has made for the Hoosiers. Only a month ago, the IU women's cross country team returned to campus from Minnesota's Roy Griak Invitational with a disappointing 15th-place finish. On Sunday, the Hoosiers captured fourth place at the Big Ten Conference cross country meet on the same Minnesota course that had flustered them earlier in the season.

Hoosiers finish 6th at Big Ten championships

The No. 22 IU men's cross country team caught a tough break just prior to the start of the 2005 Big Ten championships and finished in sixth place. The finish marks one of the lowest in recent history for the Hoosiers, who were hurt by senior All-American John Jefferson being unable to compete due to a chronic hip injury. IU was left with only two members of its front-running trio.

Dream season ends for IU

After 64 minutes of play, the No. 9 IU field hockey team held a 3-2 advantage over No. 6 Penn State and appeared poised for the Big Ten title-clinching upset Friday. That was until the Nittany Lions' Annelise Legel broke free and tied the score at 3-3. Legel's goal sent the match into overtime, when in the 74th minute, Penn State's Kiersten Wood netted the game-winning goal.

Defensive lineup changes might be in store for IU

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Hoosier defense couldn't have asked to start its afternoon any differently. On Michigan State's first three offensive plays, IU's seemingly stout defense flew to the ball, gang-tackled and pushed the Spartans back eight yards into their own end zone, where a hurried MSU quarterback Drew Stanton was called for intentional grounding and a safety.

Hoosiers' Big Ten road woes continue

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Just 13 seconds into Saturday's game, the Hoosiers found themselves in a familiar position: forced to come from behind on the road against a Big Ten opponent. Michigan State's Demond Williams returned IU's opening kickoff 98 yards for the first score of the game, en route to the Spartans' 46-15 victory. It marked Michigan State's first touchdown on an opening kickoff return since 1947.

IU heads to last race of fall season

The Hoosiers hope to begin another successful year of rowing Sunday at their only contest of the fall season, the Head of the Elk, a 5K race against the clock on the St. Joseph River in Elkhart, Ind. IU coach Steve Peterson said he doesn't place a lot of value on the results of fall races, but believes the event will allow him to assess the team against stiff competition, including Big Ten rivals. He also thinks a well-rowed race could have a huge impact on the sprint season.

After double OT, Hoosiers tie Boilers

If a tie is like kissing your sister, then Thursday's game must have felt like a full-out make out session. After 110 minutes of soccer, the IU women's soccer team tied arch rival Purdue 1-1 in a game that featured many scoring chances. It wasn't all negative for the Hoosiers, who with the tie officially qualified for the Big Ten tournament. So maybe it's more like a peck on the cheek.

Postseason mindset begins this weekend

The IU men's soccer team begins its final week before the postseason in an unfamiliar position -- the underdog. The No. 5 Hoosiers travel to College Park, Md., to face No. 3 University of Maryland Saturday night, and welcome No. 1 University of Akron Thursday to wrap up the regular season and prepare for the defense of their national championship.

Switching sides

Hoosiers hold Irish scoreless in win

SOUTH BEND -- Four days ago, Mike Freitag said he witnessed the worst IU men's soccer game he's ever seen as his squad tied Ohio State, 2-2. Last night, the second-year coach said the cream and crimson played their best match all season. IU defeated Notre Dame 3-0 in front of 2,418 fans at Alumni Field at Notre Dame on a night when the temperature dropped to 40 degrees.

Air Force coach might face punishment for remarks

DENVER -- Air Force Academy officials reprimanded coach Fisher DeBerry on Wednesday for what it called "seriously inappropriate" comments about black athletes but stopped short of firing him for his second public firestorm in as many years.
