First-year IU players struggle with early Big Ten games

The right of passage into Big Ten basketball isn't an easy one. Just ask senior forward Marco Killingsworth, who had to deal with checks, bumps, elbows, slaps, scrapes and shoves for 40 minutes against Michigan's big men Tuesday night. It marked the first Big Ten conference action for many of IU's key players including Killingsworth, fellow senior transfer Lewis Monroe, junior college transfer Earl Calloway and freshman Ben Allen.

Colts continue pursuit of perfection with No. 13

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- With most of their goals accomplished, the Indianapolis Colts can now turn their attention to history. But don't expect them to look too far ahead. Peyton Manning threw two touchdown passes to Marvin Harrison, Mike Vanderjagt kicked four field goals and the Colts remained unbeaten with a 26-18 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

IU facing the 'winter of dissatisfaction'

While last offseason was a winter of transition for the IU football team, coach Terry Hoeppner has labeled this offseason a "winter of dissatisfaction." "For anyone who needs a change, this is a winter of dissatisfaction," Hoeppner said. "We came out with the goal to 'Play 12' this season and we were unable to do so. Maybe next year our goal will be to 'Play 13.'"

IU wins tourney in lopsided fashion

IU wrestlers combined for individual records of 18-2 in Saturday's Hoosier Duals at Assembly Hall to help IU to a 36-3 victory over Eastern Illinois University and a 37-3 win over Gardner Webb University. The duals were the first for the No. 16 Hoosiers. IU coach Duane Goldman was happy with his team's effort, which came off of a bye week.

RCA Dome kind to IU as women also win

In their fifth straight game away from Assembly Hall, three seniors led the way for the Hoosiers on Saturday. The three players combined for 48 points, nearly enough to top Boston University's team total of 54. Four other Hoosiers made up the rest of the team's 14 points as IU defeated Boston 62-54 Saturday at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

Terps edge No. 6 Boston College

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland welcomed No. 6 Boston College to the Atlantic Coast Conference with a slap in the face. Ekene Ibekwe scored 21 points, Chris McCray had 16, and the No. 19 ranked Terrapins ruined the Eagles' ACC debut with a 73-71 victory Sunday night. Craig Smith had 23 points and 12 rebounds, and Sean Marshall scored 15 for the Eagles (6-2), who lost to a Top 25 team for the second time in six days. The defeat came on the heels of a loss to No. 14 Michigan State on Tuesday night.

Lineup change fuels Ratliff record

INDIANAPOLIS -- Getting sophomore guard A.J. Ratliff going was only a matter of changing the starting lineup. IU coach Mike Davis inserted Ratliff into the opening rotation to jumpstart the sophomore's play. He has lacked confidence ever since he broke his thumb in October. It was just what the doctor ordered. Ratliff averaged a point per minute Saturday, scoring all of his 21 points in the second half.

What did Mike Davis get for finally beating Kentucky?

INDIANAPOLIS -- As the final seconds ticked off the scoreboard in the RCA Dome Saturday, Davis found himself shrouded by his star forward who just finished "his best game," according to Davis. The senior transfer assembled another killer stat line, scoring 23 points on 7-of-8 shooting, grabbing 11 rebounds and even managing a respectable 9-for-14 free throw performance.

BLUE CRUSHED

INDIANAPOLIS -- It wasn't a monkey that IU coach Mike Davis got off his back Saturday night -- it was a gorilla. And he didn't just take it off -- he threw it, as the Hoosiers thrashed Kentucky 79-53 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. "Our guys are excited about it," Davis said after beating the 'Cats for the first time in his six-year career. "We are trying to make this a good season and you can't get caught up in one game."

3 Hoosiers named All-Americans

As the College Cup kicked off in Cary, N.C., and the IU men's soccer team stayed home for the first time since 2002, three outgoing IU men's soccer players received All-America honors. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America named senior Brian Plotkin to the first team, while juniors Jacob Peterson and Jed Zayner received third team honors Friday.

Hoosiers battle adversity in roller coaster season

The 2005 IU women's cross country season began with high expectations and ended with disappointment. The team returned several runners with two years of national meet experience -- led by junior All-American Jessica Gall -- and began the season by taking first place at the Indiana Intercollegiate meet. However, after several mid-pack finishes in meets with a large number of competitors, the Hoosiers' season looked like it could not be salvaged. In the Big Ten meet, though, the team left its previous frustrations behind and snatched a fourth-place finish. "This season is really a testament to our ability to overcome adversity and to take on the obstacles we've faced," said senior Larra Overton.

Title hopes dashed after loss, IU tries to rebuild

For the first time in three seasons, the IU men's soccer team will not be the NCAA champion. While college soccer's national champion will be crowned this weekend at the College Cup, the Hoosiers can only reflect upon a season full of "what ifs." Notre Dame knocked the Cream and Crimson out of the second round of the NCAA tournament Nov. 22. The 2-0 defeat marked the earliest exit in the NCAA tournament for the Hoosiers since 1995.

IU grapplers rested and ready for weekend's Hoosier Duals

A week off usually lets a team rest up and get physically healthy. In the case of the IU wrestling team, it also helps to keep the mood loose in the locker room. Before a practice earlier this week, coach Duane Goldman found out that Cumberland University, one of the teams set to come to this weekend's Hoosier Duals, was not planning to come after all. "Is there any way that we can force Cumberland to come?" joked one of the student managers.

RCA Dome as good as home

The IU women's basketball team will try to retain some home court advantage when it takes on Boston University Saturday at the RCA Dome. IU is coming off a 3-1 road trip in which the Hoosiers most recently defeated Eastern Michigan 70-64 Wednesday night. Against the Eagles, IU jumped out to an early first half lead that never faltered, although Eastern Michigan made several comeback attempts. The Hoosiers allowed the Eagles to get as close as three points but held on for the win.

UK's Morris suspended for season

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The NCAA restored the eligibility of Kentucky center Randolph Morris Thursday, but said he must sit out the entire basketball season as a condition of his reinstatement after his unsuccessful entry into the NBA draft. Morris also must repay expenses related to tryouts for NBA teams, the NCAA said in a statement released Thursday, adding that the conditions were imposed "based on the seriousness of multiple rules violations involving dealings with an agent and accepting expenses to tryout for NBA teams."

My crush is fading

Wow, really guys? Indiana State, huh? We lost to the other, other, other team in our home state. Sure, it was on the road and, yeah, they played great, but we should have won that thing by double-digits blindfolded. After that game my opinion of our team has shifted slightly. The only comparison I can think of is L.C. from "Laguna Beach." When you first see her, she looks great and there are honestly no visible flaws. Then you get to know her a little bit, and it confounds you how anyone could pass her up because honestly, she's perfect. Then later in the season, she starts dating that loser, Jason, and everything changes. You begin to wonder what possessed her to do such a thing and ponder if it was all just a façade and if this is who she really is. You wonder if your massive crush on her was based on a lie or if it was justified. Yeah, it's kinda like that.

Defensive lapses and turnovers have plagued IU, prevented sealing games

At times, the Hoosier offense has looked down-right sloppy. They've thrown passes to no one. They've lost their dribble trying to keep a quick pace. Twice their turnover totals climbed into the twenties. And in their two losses, their turnovers have surpasses their assists.

Jekyll & Hyde Hoosiers

At times, the Hoosier offense has looked flat-out impressive. They averaged 100 points in their first three games. They drained 16 threes -- twice. And they recorded more than 20 assists in all four of the team's wins this season. "It's making the open passes," said IU coach Mike Davis. "Our assist numbers were way up when we were throwing the ball out and making the extra passes." There is no shortage of weapons in the IU offense. Senior Marco Killingsworth stormed onto the national scene with a 34-point performance against No. 1 Duke. Senior Marshall Strickland shoots better than 50 percent from three. And freshman Ben Allen has recently increased his production, dropping 21 on Indiana State behind five-of-six three-point shooting.

Sizing up the 'Cats

IU senior forward Marco Killingsworth has dealt with some big bodies in the low post already in the young season -- like Duke standout Shelden Williams and Eastern Michigan's John Bowler. But the No. 15 Kentucky Wildcats will throw something completely different at the Auburn transfer Saturday -- an arsenal of the 7-foot variety. Kentucky coach Tubby Smith has a lineup with major height in 7-foot centers Lucasz Orbek and Jared Carter and 7-foot-3-inch center Shagari Alleyne, the presumed starter in the middle at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

Marlins ship Pierre to Cubs as part of trade

DALLAS -- The Florida Marlins likely finished their salary purge on Wednesday, sending center fielder Juan Pierre to the Chicago Cubs for right-hander Sergio Mitre and Double-A pitchers Ricky Nolasco and Renyel Pinto. The only high-priced players remaining on the Marlins roster are 22-game winner Dontrelle Willis and slugger Miguel Cabrera. Pierre is eligible for salary arbitration and expected to make $5 million to $6 million in 2006. The 28-year-old Pierre batted .276 with 181 hits, 96 runs and 57 stolen bases last season. He gives the Cubs the leadoff hitter they lacked in 2005, when they finished fourth, 21 games behind the Cardinals, with a 79-83 record that was their first losing season in three years.
