Frustrations get best of Hoosiers in first Big Ten loss

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- As the Michigan State lead swelled throughout the second half, IU's frustration only mounted. On this night, the cooler heads would prevail. Among the seemingly endless string of Hoosier frustrations were reach-in fouls, verbal spats and continuous loose balls bouncing into awaiting Spartan arms. But perhaps nothing was as continually agonizing for the Hoosiers as the multiple Spartan shots that dropped as the shot clock buzzer sounded.

Freshman Ben Allen looks to step into expanded role

Freshman center Ben Allen broke out against Indiana State last month, scoring 21 points and grabbing seven rebounds. But his performance couldn't earn him much extra playing time because sophomore forward D.J. White was gradually becoming healthy again and resuming his starting role.

D.J. White sidelined again

Sophomore forward D.J. White is out indefinitely after injuring his left foot in Saturday's game against Ohio State, IU coach Mike Davis announced Monday. The injury is on the same foot White hurt earlier this year, but the location is different. "It is a significant injury to the foot," team trainer Tim Garl said. "It is a different injury to a different part of the foot than he had originally. Originally, it was more of a stress fracture that happened over time. This is an injury that happened from a specific episode."

Russell qualifies for Commonwealth Games

Junior Colin Russell earned the rare opportunity to represent his native country when he qualified for Canada's Commonwealth Games team during the nation's trials held Nov. 23-26 at Saanich Commonwealth Place in Victoria, B.C. "Wearing my country's colors and representing Canada for me is a great feeling," Russell said. "I love Canada and what it stands for. It's an honor." Russell was born in Barrie, Ontario, after which he moved to Florida and Spain and then returned to Canada to decide whether to attend a Canadian or American school.

IU drops 2nd consecutive Big Ten game in Assembly Hall

Hanging high above Branch McCracken court, IU coach Sharon Versyp appeared on the scoreboard and proclaimed the keys to victory prior to Monday night's match-up with No. 17 Minnesota (10-3, 3-0 Big Ten). Number one on the list was dominating the boards. That did not happen. Minnesota finished with six more rebounds than IU (8-7, 2-2 Big Ten), 13 offensive rebounds and a 69-64 victory.

Hoosier duo sets free throw shooting records

While Monday's game against No. 15 Minnesota will go down in the books as a loss, two IU players will go into the record books for personal achievements. With 2:11 remaining in the second half, senior forward Jenny DeMuth stepped to the free throw line. With the Hoosiers down by six, DeMuth sunk both shots, breaking IU all-time career free throw record of 443. The record was previously held by Denise Jackson, IU's all-time leading scorer with 1,917 points. DeMuth entered Monday's action needing to hit seven free throws to tie the record and eight to break it. On the night, the senior sunk all ten of her free throw attempts in leading the Hoosiers with 18 points.

Pats advance to Denver, Steelers to play Colts

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Tom Brady, Willie McGinest and the New England Patriots outclassed Jacksonville, setting an NFL record with 10 straight postseason victories and sending a warning to the rest of the league. Watch out, the Patriots look like champions again.

The IU men's track team opened its season Saturday at Gladstein Fieldhouse at the Hoosier Open and for the first time tested the facility's new surface, a 200-meter banked track. IU junior sprinter David Neville opened the day in thrilling fashion as he raced out to a personal best and a victory in the 400-meter sprint. Neville's time of 46.67 undercut his previous mark, which he set Dec. 12, 2005.

Hoosiers try to bounce back after tough overtime loss to rival Purdue

Coming off its first conference loss -- in an overtime thriller against rival Purdue, no less -- the IU women's basketball team will attempt to get back on track at 7 p.m. tonight versus another ranked Big Ten team when the No. 15 Minnesota Golden Gophers invade Assembly Hall. Thursday's 61-56 loss to the No. 14 Boilermakers was the first conference loss of the season for the Hoosiers, dropping them to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten play.

Ohio State dared Lewis Monroe to beat them. And that's precisely what happened. The Buckeyes served the senior transfer a virtual slap to the face when they barely guarded him on defense, often leaving him open to double team fellow Auburn transfer Marco Killingsworth. But Monroe swung back in the second half, serving Ohio State a knockout blow with 11 points and five assists in the final period.

Eight of the 15 teams ranked ahead of No. 16 IU lost this weekend, but the Hoosiers narrowly avoided the same fate, clutching victory away from No. 18 Ohio State in the final seconds, 81-79. Saturday's game marked Ohio State's first loss of the season and kept IU at a perfect 2-0 in the Big Ten. Only IU, Northwestern and Wisconsin remain unbeaten after just two conference games.

Hoeppner has tumor removed

IU football coach Terry Hoeppner's physicians expect him to make a full recovery after a Dec. 27, 2005, surgery that removed a tumor from the right side of his brain. Hoeppner experienced headaches Dec. 24, 2005, while in Cleveland watching quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who Hoepnner coached at Miami of Ohio, lead the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Browns. Hoeppner returned to Bloomington Dec. 26, 2005, and underwent neurological tests that revealed the tumor.

Hoosiers fall to Purdue in OT

Katie Gearlds scored 19 points to lead No. 14 Purdue to a 61-56 overtime win against Indiana Thursday night. Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton scored on a short turnaround jumper with 18 seconds left in overtime to give Purdue a 59-56 lead. Indiana's Nikki Smith traveled, and Wisdom-Hylton made two free throws to seal it for Purdue.

Winter 'Warrior'

There's still one more gift awaiting IU students upon their return to campus this week: a new and improved Robert Vaden. The sophomore forward sent his scoring and 3-point numbers skyward during the holiday break -- an additional threat to his already lengthy list of attributes. He rebounds, he passes, he scores and he defends. As assistant coach Donnie Marsh simply put it: he is a warrior.

Recruit earns player of year honors, will come to IU in fall

IU volleyball recruit Allison Regas just keeps piling on the prep accolades. Regas, a 6-foot-1-inch setter from Jacksonville, Fla., recently added the 2005 Times-Union First Coast Volleyball Player of the Year award to go along with class 3A first team all-state recognition for the 2005 season.

Nguyen, Plotkin earn awards

SoccerAmerica magazine recognized Hoosier freshman forward Lee Nguyen and senior midfielder Brian Plotkin in their college soccer issue. Plotkin was one of 11 players to be named to the 30th annual SoccerAmerica MVP list. Nguyen became the first Hoosier named SoccerAmerica freshman of the year since Nick Garcia in 1997.
