Johnson grabs win with late pass on Stewart

HAMPTON, Ga. – Jimmie Johnson already has his eye on the big prize. The reigning NASCAR Nextel Cup champion passed Tony Stewart three laps from the end Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway and went on to win his second straight race. “We’re thinking championship already,” said Johnson, only four races into the 36-race season. “That’s really the mode anymore. You have to think about points and being in the top 12 all the time.” Johnson had the car to beat Sunday, leading 132 of the first 238 laps. But the only laps he led the rest of the way in the 325-lap event on Atlanta’s 1.5-mile oval were the last three.

Hoosiers finish strong at NCAA nationals during spring break

As some IU students were heading home or to the beach for spring break, three IU track and field athletes were kicking off their spring breaks with a trip to Fayetteville, Ark., for the NCAA indoor championships. Jumpers, junior Kyle Jenkins and senior Kiwan Lawson competed for the men, while freshman pole vaulter Vera Neuenswander competed on the women’s side.

IU returns to early form with big wins

The IU men’s tennis team traveled to Clemson, S.C., with hopes of snapping a three-match losing streak and winless record against nationally ranked opponents. After dropping their two Clemson Invitational matches March 10, the Hoosiers rebounded, upsetting No. 57 Furman and also defeating Wofford on Thursday.

Hoosiers to begin WNIT tournament

For the second time in as many years, the IU women’s basketball team qualified for the women’s NIT tournament and will play its first game against Iona College 7 p.m. today at Assembly Hall. This will be the first ever matchup between IU and Iona.

Hoosiers finish 14th at nationals

At the 2007 NCAA championships, the IU wrestling team gave a great showing with some unusual players stepping up to propel the team to an impressive showing. IU finished 14th at the championships with 41.0 points. It was the second time in the last three years IU has finished in the top 15 and the third straight season IU has been in the top 20.

IU president awards Greenspan contract extension through 2013

IU Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan will receive a contract extension through 2013. IU President Adam Herbert announced March 13 that he awarded Greenspan the three-year, nine-month extension through June 30, 2013, according to a news release from IU media relations.

Nadal wins Pacific Life, claims first title since French Open championship

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – By Rafael Nadal’s standards, it was a long dry spell. Nadal captured his first title since the French Open, beating Novak Djokovic 6-2, 7-5 Sunday in the Pacific Life Open. “It was a very great week for me, a very, very important week,” he said. “I have (gone) eight months without any title, but I came back with a big one.”

IU nabs record day at UNLV Spring Invitational

“Rebounding” is usually a term associated with basketball. But as far as the IU women’s golf team is concerned, it can be used to describe the team’s performance at the UNLV Spring Invitational. After several disappointing tournaments, the Hoosiers bounced back in a big way to finish fourth and set a school record with a score of 864.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The IU players didn’t have to say a word after their game Saturday night. Their faces said it all. Senior guard Rod Wilmont slumped in a chair, tears welling up in his eyes. Junior forward Lance Stemler paced along the back of the locker room, his eyes swollen and red from crying. And not a single word was spoken among the players.

Hoosiers find consistency in Florida

IU coach Stacey Phillips’ softball team found just what it was looking for all season when it went on a nine-game winning streak during the course of 15 games. The team had been struggling with consistency but dispelled all its troubles during a successful spring break. The Hoosiers won the Bronze Bracket in Clearwater, Fla., defeating Fordham 7-2 and competed hard in Tampa, Fla., where they won seven of nine contests.

IU swims to 11th-place national finish

As the IU women’s swimming and diving team traveled to Minneapolis for the NCAA championships, its sights were set on a top-10 finish. Although an 11th-place finish was just short of the goal, it was still plenty of cause for excitement.

Hoosiers go .500 during break

The IU baseball team took that old adage to heart for its annual spring trip, losing its first four games before rebounding and running off four straight victories to wrap up its Florida visit. The Hoosiers wrapped up their eight-game road trip Saturday with a doubleheader sweep at Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Fla.

End of the road

On a night that united two of college basketball’s historically dominant programs, the IU men’s basketball team made history of its own, but of a dubious kind . In a first half in which they had more fouls than converted field goals, the Hoosiers scored just 13 points, the fewest in any NCAA tournament game in the post-shot clock era.

UPDATE 10:33 p.m.: Hoeppner skipping spring practice for health reasons

INDIANAPOLIS – IU coach Terry Hoeppner, who has had brain surgery twice in the last 15 months, will skip spring practice for health reasons. Athletic director Rick Greenspan said in a statement Sunday night Hoeppner had indicated a desire to regain his strength and energy after a rigorous recruiting campaign. Assistant head coach Bill Lynch will be in a charge of the team when it begins practice on Tuesday.

UPDATE: A gutsy goodbye

UPDATE: Hoosiers make most of second chance

Last time around, IU and Gonzaga battled it out in a high-scoring game in which the Bulldogs dominated the paint. Six Gonzaga players scored in double-figures en route to a 90-80 victory against the Hoosiers in the second round of the 2006 NCAA tournament. Fortunately for IU, this time around was nothing like the last.
