IU hosts Northwestern for 4-game Big Ten series

It looked as if the IU baseball team was on a roll. After winning seven games in a row – the longest winning streak under head coach Tracy Smith – the Hoosiers suffered a setback last weekend in its Big Ten opener against Michigan State.




Freshman Keeling to leave IU program

Xavier Keeling, a freshman forward on the men’s basketball team, will be transferring from IU at the end of the semester, the athletics department said in a press release Wednesday morning.

Aside from an IU tennis ball that one Ohio State player pocketed as a souvenir, the Buckeyes had nothing to show for their hard-fought, 1-6 loss against the IU women’s tennis team Wednesday night.

Foreign players unite tennis and education

Alba Berdala still remembers the day she left her family, friends and country behind. “That was, I think, the most scary event of my life,” the sophomore IU tennis player said. “It was hard. I had no idea where I was going, no idea what to study. ...(But playing collegiate tennis) was something I knew I wanted to do.”

Helping in any way he can, Powers adjusts to role as tight end, mentor

Just one year ago, Blake Powers was preparing for another season as the starting quarterback for the IU football team, and Kellen Lewis was a name unknown by many Hoosier fans. Entering this year’s spring practices, the story has changed for both players. Lewis is now the starting quarterback, and Powers has switched over to play tight end for his senior season.

Basketball. Jogging. Sword fights. It wasn’t the most typical weekend at the Wildermuth Gymnasium. The IU Fencing Club hosted the United States Association of Collegiate Fencing Clubs’ national championships at the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation this weekend. While most HPER occupants are decked in gym shorts and Under Armour, these patrons donned real armor – and sabers.

Cutters’ Bishop, Teter’s Rieke capture Miss-n-Out victories

With three-fourths of a lap remaining, Cutters rider Alex Bishop all but wrapped up his second consecutive Miss-n-Out victory. Although Bishop was joined on the track with two of the fastest sprinters in the field – Dodds House rider Chris Chartier and Phi Kappa Psi rider Erik Styacich – he won the race by getting to Turn 1 first.

Graduate student narrowly misses national title

IU post-graduate swimmer Kevin Swander traveled to East Meadow, N.Y., for the USA Swimming Spring Championships with hopes of winning a national championship in the 100-meter breaststroke. However, swimming with a sprained ankle, Swander added seconds to his time and finished in a disappointing second place with a time of 1:03.30.
