Despite unfavorable weather for meets, the men’s and women’s track and field teams will continue to clear hurdles this season. After canceling last weekend’s Indiana Relays, the teams will be taking their top athletes to Columbia, Mo., this weekend to compete in the Tom Botts Invitational held by the University of Missouri.
The toughest weekend of the season has passed, but the IU women’s tennis team can’t fall asleep on this weekend’s opponents. The No. 33 Hoosiers lost to No. 2 Notre Dame and now-No. 9 Northwestern last weekend in what was the team’s most difficult pair of matches this season. IU’s schedule eases up this weekend, but only by comparison.
For most IU seniors, their life perspectives change after graduation. For one IU women’s water polo player, it changed before her senior year even started. In August 2005, Emily Schmitt was preparing for her senior year of college, just a few months before the start of her last water polo season. She set out for a bike ride in an attempt to make the most of one of the last remaining days of summer. While traveling down an unfamiliar road, she was hit by a van and blacked out. “I don’t remember the few minutes before it happened,” Schmitt said. “I had no recollection of the impact or sound. The first real recollection of that night was being in the hospital.”
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Duke lacrosse rape case finally collapsed Wednesday, with North Carolina’s top prosecutor saying the three athletes were railroaded by a district attorney who ignored increasingly flimsy evidence in a “tragic rush to accuse.”
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Colts will be working late next season. League officials made the Super Bowl champions their feature attraction in 2007, giving the Colts five prime-time games including a Thanksgiving night game at Atlanta and four late-afternoon Sunday contests on the 16-game schedule. It won’t bother coach Tony Dungy.
PITTSBURGH – So Taguchi couldn’t have had a much better day, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and reaching base four times. With the game on the line in the ninth inning, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa felt he had an even better option.
The IU men’s basketball team added another player to its already illustrious 2007 recruiting class. Chicago native DeAndre Thomas – a 6-foot-8, 295-pound forward from Chipola Junior College in Florida – signed his national letter of intent to play for the Hoosiers next season, IU coach Kelvin Sampson announced Wednesday afternoon.
NEW YORK – MSNBC said Wednesday it will drop its simulcast of the “Imus in the Morning” radio program, responding to growing outrage about the radio host’s racial slur against the Rutgers women’s basketball team.
Focusing on fitness, the IU club rugby team’s new coach looks to make his players keep up a stellar season on the pitch.
Sophomore shortstop Emily Bergeson was in the middle of a slump. Then she was thrown into the position every player dreams of: two outs and the bases loaded with the opportunity to give her team a chance to win.
Break dancing: a form of solo dancing that involves rapid acrobatic moves in which different parts of the body touch the ground. The IU Break Dance Club has been active for almost eight years. It was founded by a student who was looking for a way to meet other break dancers on campus.
Playing its fifth game in three days and its first midweek nonconference contest since March 7, the IU baseball team fell 8-1 to the Evansville Purple Aces at Sembower Field on Monday. The loss snapped a quick two-game winning streak for the Hoosiers and dropped them to 13-14.
Sophomore Hilary Sinker didn’t think she would be skating in college. She arrived without skates, only to call her mom telling her she’d have to send them.

Despite being almost done with the season, the IU women’s golf team still has a few things to improve on after its finish at the Indiana Invitational at Crooked Stick Golf Course in Carmel, Ind. After two straight tournament finishes in the top four, the Hoosiers fell to finish ninth in the 17-team field.
IU senior swimmer Leila Vaziri sits with her gold medal close by and reflects on her world-record-breaking performance at the World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. Her eyes look heavy, but she can hardly contain her smile. She has been back in Bloomington for almost a week, but she’s still adjusting to the time change and getting to know the gold medal she keeps by her side.
Maybe the IU baseball team should play more Monday doubleheaders. With weekend weather conditions forcing the Hoosiers to play a Big Ten twin bill, IU (13-13, 3-5) took two games, 5-4 and 5-2, from Northwestern to split the four-game series with the Wildcats.
I bet you’ve passed it a few hundred times, maybe more. It is a sign, small and simple. White words wrap around a dull maroon rectangle with the declaration: Ora L. Wildermuth Intramural Center.
The IU softball team is set to square off against in-state competitor Indiana State for the 67th time since the 1975 season when the two teams clash this afternoon. IU holds the winning edge with a 49-17 record against the Sycamores. Opening pitch is at 4 p.m. today at the IU Softball Field. IU will have the home advantage in this game and will be looking to add another win to its all-time record against Indiana State.
