RecSports promote health, activity

Two single-file lines engulfed the entrance to the Student Recreational Sports Center Tuesday, while a constant stream of people exiting the gym created a scene reminiscent of a crowded city subway.

Freshmen receive free entry to 1st football game

In its latest marketing strategy to draw more fans to Memorial Stadium to see the football team play, the IU Athletics Department is giving all freshmen free tickets to this weekend’s IU vs. Indiana State football game.

IU football prepares for 1st game Saturday

The Hoosiers are hoping to learn from last season’s mistakes. After jumping out to a 2-0 start in 2006, the IU football team dropped its next two games – both at home – to Division I-AA Southern Illinois and Division I-A Connecticut. Had they been able to win just one of those two games, IU would have been bowl eligible for the first time in 13 years.

No. 2-rated recruits impress early, often

In 2006, the IU men’s soccer team earned its 12th Big Ten regular season championship and its 11th Big Ten tournament championship. This year, the Hoosiers will have a different look as a team, but they will still be in search of the same achievements after signing a freshman class rated No. 2 in the nation by College Soccer News. This class includes four high school All-Americans and last year’s top scorer in the state.

Comcast, Big Ten Network gridlocked

So much for making nice. After weeks of negotiations, the Big Ten Network officially announced last Thursday that it will not come to an agreement with the cable provider Comcast in time for the network’s Thursday launch. As a result of this decision, viewers who subscribe to Comcast or Insight, which will become Comcast, will miss out on the network’s opening telecasts, including the IU versus Indiana State game this Saturday.

Ratliff academically ineligible for first semester

IU men’s basketball senior guard A.J. Ratliff is academically ineligible to play during the first semester, coach Kelvin Sampson said at a press conference Saturday. The former Indiana Mr. Basketball cannot play with the Hoosiers until they host Western Carolina on Dec. 15, the day after final exams wrap up for the first semester.

It’s a good thing the IU men’s soccer team has been scrimmaging regularly in preparation for the upcoming season, because its Saturday night contest against the University of New Mexico was the only game experience it will have in preparation for the 2007 season.

Despite having their opening match postponed due to bus problems and severe weather, the IU volleyball team won two out of three matches as they began their season in DeKalb, Ill., playing in the Northern Illinois Invitational.
