Bin Laden says United States 'full of fear'

CAIRO, Egypt -- Osama bin Laden praised God for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and swore America will never "dream of security" until "the infidels' armies leave the land of Muhammad," in a videotaped statement aired after the strike launched Sunday by the United States and Britain against Afghanistan. The taped comments appeared to be made in daylight, which would mean that the video was recorded before the Sunday night's attacks.

Striking back

·

WASHINGTON -- American and British forces unleashed a punishing air attack Sunday against military targets and Osama bin Laden's training camps inside Afghanistan, striking at terrorists blamed for the attacks that murdered thousands in New York and Washington. "We will not waver, we will not tire," said President Bush, speaking from the White House as Tomahawk cruise missiles and bombs found targets halfway around the globe. "We will not falter and we will not fail."

On the nature of evil

·

A fellow student's comment, "I'd like to think people are basically good," intrigued me. It was Sept. 11. Amid a shaken world, the young man was searching for hope, a refuge from the storm that raged all around. By thinking that humanity is mostly good, there is comfort, there is solace. The theory postulates that society may have a few misdirected individuals, but if we only can educate or influence them correctly, we may achieve the utopia for which we long. Comforting perhaps, but is it truth?

British dossier links evidence to bin Laden

·

LONDON -- Osama bin Laden spoke of a "major attack on America" in the days before the strikes on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and warned associates to return to Afghanistan by Sept. 10, according to a dossier released by the British government on Thursday. The report is the first attempt by a government to lay out evidence, albeit circumstantial, connecting bin Laden to the attacks.

Community gathers for annual 5K run

·

More than 1,000 students, faculty and community members will start and end a 5K run/walk at a Memorial Stadium endzone Saturday, all to help to find missing student Jill Behrman and to support her family and friends. The six-year-old event, which added Behrman's name to the event two years ago, is sponsored by the IU Division of Recreational Sports. The gun goes off at 10 a.m. for the 5K (3.1 miles) run and 5K non-competitive walk. A one-mile walk will take place at 10:10 a.m. for families with children.

Looking to pick up the pace

·

The women's cross country team competes today at the Notre Dame Cross Country Invitational in South Bend. The team looks to bounce back this week after a disappointing race last weekend at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis. The Hoosiers will compete against tough talent from their region. They will face Notre Dame, Ball State, Butler and Miami (Ohio). This will be the second 6K race for the Hoosiers this season. Butler and Miami (Ohio) have defeated the Hoosiers in previous races this year.

Students 'Take Back the Night'

·

T-shirts gently flapping in the evening breeze told the terrifying story as the notes of harmony spread over Dunn Meadow. The warm glow of candles illuminated the faces of IU students and Bloomington residents as they stood together to remember victims of domestic and sexual abuse. Take Back the Night began its annual protest of violence against women Thursday night, with student a capella group Delusions of Grandeur kicking off the evening with melodies and a little humor. Performing fan favorites like "Alright" and "Still of the Night" was special, the group said.

Women learn from experience in past matches, move on

·

The women\'s volleyball record has not effected its spirits as the team hits the road this weekend. The Hoosiers will travel to Minnesota Friday to face Iowa on Saturday. IU is 3-8 overall and a disappointing 0-4 in the conference. "I think (the past weekend\'s matches) have taught us to really take from those experiences and move on," senior Meghan Stout said. "I think that we all have a different attitude now and I think it has inspired us because we know our potential and we know we are so much better than that."

Team looks for first win

·

Much has been said about the season snowballing and confidence disappearing after the football team's 0-3 start. The Hoosiers' offense has struggled, and its defense -- although improved -- is giving up too many key first downs. Coach Cam Cameron said he doesn't think about the potential for an 0-4, 0-5, 0-whatever start. His team's motto: There's no such thing as a bad day.

IU heads north for conference play

Less than a week removed from its first conference loss, a humbling 4-1 defeat at the hands of Penn State, the women's soccer team will look to rebound on the road when it travels to Minnesota to play the Golden Gophers at 7 p.m. tonight.

Big Ten road warriors

·

It is not the season opener. It's not the home opener. It's not the Big Ten opener. No more new beginnings for the football team that is desperately searching for its first win. IU travels to Wisconsin for a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday to play at arguably one of the hardest places on the road in the hopes of securing a victory.

Embracing the Night

·

\"Three years ago, I was in an abusive relationship," junior Suzanne Wargo said as she looked down at her feet. "My ex-boyfriend raped me -- a few times." Stories such as Wargo's permeated the still air Wednesday and Thursday night as one by one, Take Back the Night participants recounted their experiences to a crowd of silent, stoic faces. Emotions ran high and tears flowed openly and regularly. The majority of participants did not know each other but they shared a common goal, they were committed to ending sexual abuse and violence toward women.

Critics: Proposed bill limits liberties

·

The House Judiciary Committee has proposed a bill that would restrict civil liberties in order to improve national security. Among two of the bill's critics are IU Law professors Patrick Baude and John Scanlan. "I think when we talk about civil liberties and acts of terrorism, it is important to separate the concerns that genuinely grow out of these events," Baude said.
