Stressed out? Library too loud to study? Cold weather getting to you? For most of Bloomington's students, staff and residents, escaping to a nearby coffeehouse for some rest, relaxation and, of course, some great coffee, seems to be not just a fad, but also the smart thing to do. Runcible Spoon, Soma and Espresso Royale are just a few of Bloomington's locally owned hot spots for some hot drinks. Comfort, quiet and great atmosphere blend such coffeehouses together, yet their unique styles present variety and pizzazz.

Getting the show on the road

·

You've been waiting for this day for weeks. Your favorite band is on tour and has finally rolled into town, saving you the hassle of a drive to Indianapolis or Cincinnati. By some stroke of luck, this artist is right here in Bloomington.

Holding court in Happy Valley

·

There's a reason why Penn State is hovering near the bottom of the men's basketball Big Ten conference standings. The Nittany Lions just can't shoot. That same reason has led to losses to teams like Yale, James Madison and California.

Gunman opens fire in Israel

·

JERUSALEM -- A Palestinian gunman fired on Israelis waiting at a Jerusalem bus stop Tuesday, fatally wounding two people and injuring 14 others. Israeli commandos hours earlier stormed an explosives lab and killed four Islamic militants in the West Bank.

Senior leader finds her time to shine

·

Her teammates call her "Grandma" because she sleeps more than the average college student. And at 22, she's one of the older IU women's basketball players.

'Black Hawk' shoots up the screen

·

Bring a sturdy stomach to the latest gory, blood-laced war epic. You'll see squirting blood, detached fingers and a legless torso. Empty bullet shells and mangled corpses outnumber developed, emotionally packed characters, creating more of a big-screen video game than a heart wrenching, smarter "Pearl Harbor."

Video Poker

·

It is an occurrence so common that it can strike on any night. The TV just isn\'t cutting it for the evening\'s entertainment purposes -- one can only take so many Miss Cleo commercials. The radio is not providing any solace either -- they've just played Nickelback for the sixth time in the past hour.

'American Pie 2' cooks up laughs

·

The most disappointing thing about "American Pie 2" was that Shannon Elizabeth announced that she'd become a serious actress and wouldn't be taking off her clothes for the sequel. But despite the lack of Nadia's chest, Jim, Oz, Kevin, Finch, Stifler and his mom return to equal, if not top, the original pie-humping comedy.

NIN album packed with emotion

·

Trent Reznor's music is anything but fragile. His dark industrial sounds jump out of the shadows, and the painful lyrics carry a backbone. The music of Nine Inch Nails is more action and less whine -- though he's pissed off, the music is a statement, not album upon album of crying, like some other dark rock artists.

What makes a 'movie' a 'film'?

·

I wear two hats when it comes to watching films. I am a movie reviewer and I am a film critic. Many might think these are the same things, but there are many differences indeed. I am a "movie reviewer" for the IDS Weekend, but I am a "film critic" in my film studies classes. They do have their similarities in that both examine film to translate for an audience whether it is good to watch, but the two have more differences than similarities and these are sometimes easy to confuse.

Ill Niño rocks you like a hurricane

·

It's the musical trend du jour. A no-name hardcore band, from a no-name suburban town writes a few angry songs and gets picked up by a major label. This has been the case with Korn, Slipknot, Mudvayne and most recently; Ill Niño.

Sound Advice

·

Greg Kot is one of the today's leading critics covering rock and roll. He's has been the pop music critic at the Chicago Tribune since 1990. Together with his counterpart from the Chicago Sun-Times, Jim DeRogatis, he has created "the world's only rock 'n' roll talk show," "Sound Opinions" on Chicago's WXRT-FM. Like Siskel and Ebert, the two argue playfully about the musical issues of the day and of the past with eloquent passion for the art they have turned over their lives to.

Spacey transforms loser into loveable

·

Get to the theater early, skip the popcorn and make sure you're in your seat when the opening credits start to roll. Whatever causes you to get to the theater late, make sure it doesn't happen when going to see "The Shipping News" starring Kevin Spacey because the first 15 minutes have more storyline than any other drama has had in a long time.

Flick fueled by Diesel and cool cars

·

"The Fast and the Furious" came out of nowhere to surprise and enthrall gear heads and action flick enthusiasts alike. The movie personifies the entire idea behind a "sleeper" hit. It didn't feature any major celebrities or have a bloated budget but managed to gross $145 million dollars domestically and cemented the career of up-and-coming action star Vin Diesel ("Pitch Black").

A storied inn

·

There are no telephones. No televisions. No radios. No clocks. Cell phones definitely won't get service. To some, it sounds like a nightmare, but to many, Story, Ind., is the perfect place to run to when they want to get away from life in the city.

Punk pop group stays true to music

·

Pop punk is becoming more popular with the kids these days, and new bands are sprouting up so the labels can cash in on the pimple-faced craze. It's good to know that a punk band, which was good even before the fad, can stay true to rocking hard and kicking ass. With their fifth full-length release entering stores Jan. 29, Elva might just put the group into the spotlight.
