42 cited at apartment

Early Sunday morning the Bloomington Police Department responded to a noise complaint at 3220 John Hinkle Place. The officers issued 40 misdemeanor citations, along with two juvenile citations for illegal consumption. Officer Joe Crider wrote a narrative account of the arrest in a police report. He described the following account: Accompanied by officer Tristy Walters, Crider entered the apartment and attempted to inform the residents they were being too loud. The two officers entered the open door of the apartment. Almost immediately after entering, Crider felt a tug near his left shoulder. The officer turned, only to discover a white male suspect holding his dispatch microphone. The suspect then attempted to wrap the cord around the rear of the officers neck, according to the police report.

Iranians unite, condemn Bush's 'axis of evil' claim

TEHRAN, Iran -- Angered by the United States' labeling of Iran as part of an "axis of evil," hundreds of thousands of Iranians chanted "Death to America" on Monday during demonstrations to mark the 23rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution. The gathering was much larger than last year's commemorations as Iranians used the occasion to show their anger with President Bush's condemnation of their country in his State of the Union address. Many Iranians who said they rarely join such celebrations spoke of taking to the streets to show solidarity.

Coach returning home Wednesday

Women's basketball coach, Kathi Bennett is expected to return home on Wednesday. Bennett remains in the hospital following a car accident last Friday.

Personal bests set at weekend meet

Never underestimate the talent of the IU women's track and field team. The undefeated ladies dominated the competition by running away with the 2002 United States Track Coaches Association Collegiate Cup by 44 points. Without even racing the 4x400-meter relay, the Hoosiers scored 139 points, defeating three Big Ten schools. Michigan took second with 95 points, with a gap between itself and the host team, Penn State (68). They were followed by Pittsburgh (56), Central Michigan (54), Toronto (47), Kent State (45), West Virginia (36), Cornell (36), Buffalo (10), Michigan State (8) and Air Force (2).

Ramsy looks to be premiere sprinter

On Saturday against Purdue in the 50-yard freestyle, the field of IU sprinters was without season best time holder sophomore Claes Andersson. Sophomore Dale Ramsy made sure the results didn't take a hit. Ramsy swam to a first place finish, good for a personal season best.

Senior starting to make waves

When senior diver Erin Quinn was in high school at Sylvania Northview in Sylvania, Ohio, she was a two-time Ohio state champion and an All-American. Her success led Quinn to be pursued by IU, Minnesota, Ohio State, Alabama and Arkansas in the recruiting process. Quinn eventually chose IU because of its strong team and diving coach Jeff Huber's success in creating national-caliber divers.

Israel should leave Palestine

Palestinians have been forced to live under Israeli military rule for thirty-four years, and are now, more than ever, determined to be free of it. The occupied territories, which include the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, are not recognized as a part of Israel by the international community and are maintained through force.

Agreements are key to peace

The last sixteen months of conflict between Palestinians and Israelis hurt me deeply. Useless fighting and bloodshed between these two peoples has to end. Palestinians and Israelis are destined to live with each other; neither side is simply going to disappear. The only solution to the bloodshed is peace.

Peace camp no longer welcome

The tents are still up, the pamphlets about women in Afghanistan and radioactive weapons are still on a table held down by rocks, the sleeping bags and camping chairs can still be seen inside the tents along with the campers who call those tents home, for now. The Dunn Meadow peace campers are similar to ghosts haunting a house; it seems as if they're just not going to leave. But how long will they actually stay out there?

What is the true age of an adult?

In the last month, IU's "alcohol problem" has been given increased attention. Much ink has been spilled in this publication on that topic. Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Delta Tau Delta had parties raided and are facing real consequences for making alcohol available to adults.

Religious leaders potentially have the power to mold the minds of millions with their own interpretations of religious texts. They can deem what is right and what is wrong and more importantly, what is truth and what is not.

Senate strips tax plan, sends blank slate to committee

INDIANAPOLIS -- Republicans who rule the Indiana Senate took their first action Monday on a tax-and-budget plan approved by the Democrat-controlled House by gutting the bill and sending a \"blank slate" to the Senate Finance Committee. The Senate Rules Committee removed tax-increase and tax-restructuring provisions, leaving only language dealing with a study committee and a title change of another committee intact.

Pentagon defends drone missile strike in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON -- U.S. soldiers who scoured the site of a CIA-directed missile attack in Afghanistan found evidence disputing claims that those killed were innocents, a senior Pentagon official said Monday. Rear Adm. John Stufflebeem said a team of more than 50 U.S. military personnel recovered ammunition, an empty box for a hand-held radio, English-language documents -- including credit card applications and commercial airline schedules -- and pieces of human remains.

Football player arrested for sexual assault

Junior cornerback Clarence Young was arrested Friday at his home after a warrant was filed Thursday by the Bloomington Police Department. Young is being accused of attempted rape, sexual assault and criminal confinement, all felonies, after a 19-year-old woman accused Young of assaulting her at a party Oct. 6, 2001, police said.
