Hoosier rocker returns

Assembly Hall will be rocking long before the basketball team has an opportunity to grace the floor. Sunday, Nov. 3, will bring local legend John Mellencamp to the Assembly Hall for what promises to be a memorable stop on his fall tour. Mellencamp, who has recorded some of the most powerful American anthems in the recent decade will be promoting his most recent album "Cuttin' Heads" when his tour swings by Bloomington, a press release said.

Storms sink search for Behrman

The search investigators hoped would find Jill Behrman's body ended Sunday after heavy rains punished two temporary dams built to drain a portion of Salt Creek. Storms Friday afternoon caused torrential rainfall in the watershed area near Salt Creek, weakening a dam that had been built in search of Behrman, an IU student who disappeared while riding her bike in May of 2000. Excess rain from Brown County and the surrounding areas flowed into the creek Friday and Saturday, putting pressure on the north dam.

State of the University today

IU President Myles Brand will present the State of the University Address, "Pursuing the Endless Frontier: Research at Indiana University," at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Frangipani Room of the Indiana Memorial Union. Brand's speech will cover his vision for research at IU, discuss some of the challenges the University encounters, suggest solutions to those challenges and discuss new directions for the future.

Police raid Phi Delts

The IU Police Department responded to an allegation of a party at the Phi Delta Theta house Saturday night. When police arrived, they noticed people running into the house and others running through the house with what appeared to be full trash bags, said Sgt. Tim Lewis of IUPD.

Trustees sell courts to fraternity house

The tennis courts at the corner of Jordan Avenue and Law Lane will be razed to make room for a brand new Kappa Sigma fraternity house. The board of trustees endorsed the sale of the property to Kappa Sigma at the Sept. 20 meeting, with the understanding that a new fraternity house would be built on the site. News of the deal surprised tennis players over the weekend.

Evangelist's message sparks discussion

Anyone who went to class Monday, or even walked across campus, probably noticed Evangelist Jim Gilles and a buzzing crowd of students gathered near the parking lot of the Indiana Memorial Union, between Woodburn Hall and Ballantine Hall. And if you didn't see them, chances are, you probably heard them. Gilles loudly preached his interpretation of the word of God in a voice that carried quite a distance. It attracted many students who were walking to class.

Beer, drinking, sex, Greek life and bars are all issues Steve Hofstetter tackles in his new book Student Body Shots. While he's not exactly Shakespeare, this book cuts through the bull providing a realistic retrospective of the best "4-6 years of your life." In a way I am glad I have finished reading the book, as I fear I was beginning to frighten my classmates with my sudden outbursts of audible laughter. The book itself is an extension of the work Hofstetter has been doing in his column "Observational Humor" featured on collegehumor.com. The important plus to the book is the pictures of the author as a child: A riveting bonus in my mind!

Group 'tempts' audience as auditorium schedule opens

The IU Auditorium kicked off its 2002-2003 season last Thursday evening with a singing and dancing package that those in attendance enjoyed watching. "The Temptations," the Motown supergroup, lived up to their high standard in stage performance, taking things to new levels of excitement and value for the almighty college dollar. Opening for the "Temps" were IU's fabled a cappella men, "Straight No Chaser."

Hershey Foods survive -- for now

HERSHEY, PA. -- Even as thousands of workers celebrated the derailment of a possible sale of Hershey Foods this week, many weren't sure whether they had saved their company, or merely postponed changes that will eventually unravel the cocoon Milton S. Hershey built around this small Pennsylvania community nearly a century ago. "I don't think anyone believes that this is the end of the issue," said August "Skip" Memmi, chairman of Derry Township's board of supervisors. "This was a close call, and a close vote, and there's nothing that says there couldn't be a sale in six months or a year."

Minutes from Tyco meeting seem damaging

CONCORD, N.H. -- Minutes from a board meeting early this year contradict Tyco International's testimony to regulators that board members had no knowledge of excessive pay packages allegedly arranged by former chief executive L. Dennis Kozlowski. Internal documents also show that a human resources official said she was pressured by a board member to do something "dishonest" during the company's internal investigation.

Adelphia CEO indicted

NEW YORK -- Adelphia Communications Corp. founder John J. Rigas, two of his sons and other former executives were indicted Monday on charges that they built "a towering facade of false success" based on a $2.5 billion fraud. The indictment, handed up in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, seeks a staggering $2.53 billion in forfeiture for the alleged large-scale accounting fraud and corporate looting.

Nasdaq slides to 6-year low

NEW YORK -- The Nasdaq composite index slid to a six-year low Monday and the rest of Wall Street fell equally hard amid a worsening outlook for the U.S. economy. The Dow Jones industrials dropped more than 100 points. Responding to a smattering of bad news -- and lacking any positive economic data -- investors essentially sold across the board, punishing shares of everything from Microsoft to Wal-Mart. The selloff carried the Nasdaq to its lowest close since September 1996, and the Dow back toward the four-year low it reached July 23.

Evolution or bust

There is a continuing debate that creationism should be taught alongside evolution in the classroom. Advocates believe evolution should not be the only explanation for the 'origin of life' presented to our students. What is astonishing is the amount of disinformation surrounding the issue and, indeed, that the debate exists at all.

Let students decide fate

Unless someone invents a time machine soon, academic institutions should stop teaching the theory of evolution as the only explanation for the origin of life. Without time travel, neither intelligent design theory nor evolution theory concerning the origin of life can be empirically disproved or tested. The theory of evolution, although it seems just harmless speculation, has serious flaws that can have negative consequences if taught as the only theory.

Instant madness

Yesterday I found myself on the slippery downward slope that is instant messenger. I can't describe the exhilaration, an entire smorgasbord of human emotions rolled into one, simple chatting system. Like the joy that comes with talking to your parents online, discussing your early Shakespeare class and the benefits of a good education, while at the same time throwing a wild party in your freshman dorm. Killer!

Bend over

I was in Barnes and Noble last week perusing the latest CDs. While I was waiting in line to pay, a little boy waiting in front of me with his mother and started throwing the most spectacular fit I have ever seen. Now, I'm not just talking a few tears. With all the screaming, flailing and red-faced wailing, this kid was in the running for an Oscar, or a nomination at least.

Disgrace of crying wolf

Despite all of those in the media who were quick to call Jenin a "massacre," it took a UN research probe to determine that the Jenin "massacre" was a huge myth, a farce if you will, with no evidence to the contrary. Not even watching scenes of staged Palestinian casualties was enough to convince the media. For those who are not familiar with the situation, news organizations across the globe reported last April on an alleged "massacre" in a Palestinian refugee camp at the hands of the Israeli army. While it is true that the Israeli army did occupy this west bank city, little that was initially reported about the incident had any truth to it.

Willkie board aims to unite

A collage of news clippings about the backlash against Muslims after Sept. 11, both on campus and around the country, was posted earlier this semester on a bulletin board in Willkie Quad. The artist, senior Emily Roth, prepared the board for a CommUNITY Education Program discussion last Tuesday at Willkie entitled, "Can you be proud to be an American without excluding those who aren't?" Some -- who believe the collage sympathizes with Muslims -- were offended, and feel no remorse for the Muslims that were targeted following Sept. 11.
