Crash kills sophomore on bypass

An IU student was killed in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday night on the SR-45/46 Bypass, between 10th and 17th streets. Chad Culver, a 19-year-old sophomore from Goshen, Ind., was riding his motorcycle at 9:20 p.m. when he lost control, left the road and hit a chain-link fence, the Bloomington division of the Indiana State Police said. Speed appears to have been a factor, police said.

Third legal claim filed over contaminated water

A third law firm has filed a tort claim notice against the Indiana Department of Environmental Management concerning contaminated water at Lincoln Elementary School. The law firm of Nancy Moore Tiller & Associates in Merrillville sent a tort claim to state officials Friday seeking a minimum of $1 million in damages.

Downtown site would house hundreds

A group of developers sponsored a meeting to present their proposal for renewing the old-Semicon property Tuesday night, making the case for two new buildings and renovation of a third on the currently vacant site. The main building of the proposal, called Smallwood Plaza, will be mostly residential. In addition to the main apartment block, a smaller structure called Smallwood Annex would be built along Morton street.

Bloomington's Teletron closes

After 13 years of prosperous business, Bloomington-based Teletron is shutting down. The telecommunications company informed its staff Wednesday morning that they would be out of work. Almost 50 employees left the office for the last time Wednesday, but Tim Lybrook, Teletron founder and president, said they will receive their unused vacation money and final paychecks.

Most college students have lived roughly a fifth-of-a-century, and a fraction of them still can't or won't do their laundry. Depending on their proximity to home, some students will horde dirty clothing until it's time to go back, thus creating piles of epic proportion.

Publisher sues ex-talk show host

The publisher of Rosie magazine sued Rosie O'Donnell for $100 million Tuesday for abruptly pulling out of the venture last month. Gruner + Jahr Printing and Publishing Co. said in court papers that the former talk show host breached her contract and publicly disparaged the magazine when she quit Rosie on Sept. 18.

Ex-couple close on custody deal

Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson are close to an agreement on custody of their two sons, lawyers told a judge Tuesday. "I believe we're really down to language" in the agreement and it probably will be signed by Monday, Lee's lawyer, Lance Spiegel, told a judge in a conference call. Details weren't disclosed.

Masterpieces in Texas

Winslow Homer's watercolor, "The Woodcutter," Fitz Hugh Lane's "Sunset at Gloucester Harbor" and Georgia O'Keeffe's "Open Clam Shell" and "Closed Clam Shell" can not be viewed at any museum in New York City or Paris. They're in Texas -- where they usually aren't on public display at all.

Lending a helping hand

It's your first week of school as a freshman and you receive an anonymous letter saying you have to meet with this person at 3:30 p.m. in the lounge of your residence hall. Confused, you go down to your appointment, and see about 50 other kids with the same expression. Then the person you're supposed to meet with comes in and explains what everything means. It's an advising meeting.

New position to lighten dean's load

IU recently named Gilbert Brown, former assistant dean of the University Division, as the new associate dean of students. In the position, Brown will assist the division of student affairs by implementing strategies to make the department more efficient, assist with diversity issues and help to establish new programs for strategic retention of target student groups, according to a University statement.

Unwanted e-mail spam invades inboxes

Some students at IU have been subjected to SPAM in a can, but most have been victim to "spam" in their e-mail inboxes. Spam, or unwanted e-mail advertisements, have become a part of the computing life at IU.

University child care salaries, costs rising

·

The base salary for university child care providers is rising. But so is child care fees, to the tune of up to 16 percent, or an additional $300 each semester. The annual base pay for lead teachers has been raised from $20,800 to $22,900. According Marty Lash, director of Campus Children's Center, only one of the three lead teachers in the Campus Children's Center program will see benefits from the pay raise. Two teachers in the program have already passed the base level pay.

The editor of the San Francisco newspaper War Times rallied Bloomington peace activists on Wednesday with a speech titled "Why War?" Max Elbaum, author of the book "Revolution in the Air," said a preemptive strike against Iraq threatens peace and justice for the entire world.

This week the Recording Industry Association of America has put into motion another foolhardy plan attempting to block the proliferation of file-sharing software and mp3s on the Internet. On Sept. 28, the RIAA and its chairperson Hillary Rosen went before the House of Representatives for a hearing on "Piracy on Peer-to-Peer Networks." The RIAA claimed that the culture of online file-sharing, including such systems as Kazaa, Morpheus and Gnutella, is a severe problem to the music industry and must be stopped at all costs even if those costs require them to fight every single music fan with access to a modem.

Catholic finger-pointing unfair

For the past year, the Catholic Church has been in uproar concerning their priests and allegations of sexual abuse with minors. It is a sensitive topic which has rightly received major attention from the press and the concerned public. But how accurate are the figures portrayed in the media? Or more importantly, are such figures really mind-blowingly out of proportion to normal figures of child molestation which occur in all corners of our society?

In a recent guest column, a member of the IU Marching Hundred expressed his displeasure at the athletic department for discontinuing the run-on, where the band runs onto the field and forms the IU trident during the pregame ceremony, and moving their game seats to the north endzone.
