Mural program, video evaluated

·

Senior Quiana Stone, undergraduate student advisor for the Black Student Union, has sat in Woodburn Hall 100 for six different classes. She has often questioned why the Thomas Hart Benton Mural, which depicts Ku Klux Klan members burning a cross, adorns the wall of a classroom environment. But until the beginning of last year, she never saw the educational video addressing the controversial panel, "Parks, the Circus, the Klan, the Press."

on the SIDELINES

·

It looks like the perfect Super Bowl matchup: Oakland's high-powered offense against Tampa Bay's stingy defense. John Lucas couldn't make winners out of the Cleveland Cavaliers, so Keith Smart is getting a shot. He's made a big one before. The women's track and field team defeated Kent State and Michigan State but lost to host Michigan in their indoor season opener on Saturday.

And this time, it's on their court, in front of their fans, and the No. 14 Hoosiers are ready for the challenge.

Abuse of Palestine must be addressed

·

Only iron breaks iron, and only violence will stop violence," Arab League Secretary General Amr Mousa said in the Mideast Mirror. This philosophy underlies the cyclical violence that has caught Palestine and Israel in a whirlwind of escalating bloodshed. Since the 1967 occupation of Palestinian territories, neither side can claim innocence of the daily crimes against the civilians of both nations. However, the abuse of Palestinian civilians by the Israeli Defense Force is an aspect of the struggle that has gone relatively unnoticed and unchecked by the United States government and media.

'Abstinence only' scares me

·

As I was returning to Bloomington from my winter break, my mind was slowly returning to college mode. However, amid all the preparations around my return, I saw something that seemed decidedly out of place in any college town. A billboard that read the following: "SEX: It can wait!"

Advocating sexual miseducation

·

Recently, the sex education debate has gotten major media attention. From a segment on MTV's "Fight For Your Rights" to political debate shows like Donahue, President Bush's position that only abstinence-only education programs shall be federally funded has sparked tempers. The irony of this heated debate is that both sides seem to agree that abstinence is the best choice. Although many groups advocate either abstinence-only or comprehensive approaches to sex education, the leading groups seem to be the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), which promotes comprehensive sex ed and Concerned Women for America (CWA) which is staunchly abstinence-only.

Illinois decision should stand

·

"The first step towards amendment is the recognition of error." Seneca the Younger -- a Roman philosopher from around 0 A.D. -- said these words, and former Illinois Gov. George Ryan must have heeded the advice. Ryan made an amendment to a system he called "haunted by the demon of error," and his decision should be supported. Ryan saw problems in the Illinois Justice System -- 13 cases of people being sentenced to death then later found innocent -- and took the right action to wipe the state's slate clean.

Dollars and sense: learning to budget and save

·

Jenny Ravellette is scared about the future. As cash keeps slipping through her fingers, the 21-year-old junior feels increasingly unprepared to manage her money. "I have no idea what I'm going to do after school," she said, eyebrows raised in seriousness. "I've never had a real job with a lot of money, with big money coming in. I won't know what to do with it."

Mark Pi's hits the mark

·

I love Chinese food. Until recently, I was having trouble finding good Chinese food in Bloomington. Most Chinese restaurants here offer up a tasteless, greasy, mess in the guise of Chinese food. After a year and a half of eating my way through dismal excuses of Chinese food, I think I have finally found a spectacular Chinese restaurant in Bloomington.

Hoosiers hit the ice against Purdue

·

It's been a long time since Purdue beat IU on the ice. So long, in fact, that nobody seems to remember. "I'm not sure how long it's been," IU coach Rich Holdeman said. "They haven't won in the ten years I've been here." IU General Manager Adam Schuchman, who holds the archive records for IU hockey, doesn't know either.
