EDINBURGH -- An Indiana congressman says he has heard that central Indiana's Camp Atterbury is being considered as a possible military base for new homeland security programs.\nRep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., said he did not know of any official decisions, but understood that the base was "being looked at pretty seriously."\nPence, a member of a House subcommittee on terrorism and homeland security, said he has been lobbying for federal officials to increase their use of Camp Atterbury.\n"This could be the biggest economic story in the making for Johnson County and Bartholomew County, even southern Indiana," said Pence, whose congressional district includes the Camp Atterbury area. "I'm hopeful, and I'm doing everything I can to promote this."\nThe Army built Camp Atterbury about 25 miles south of Indianapolis during the World War II. About 275,000 soldiers underwent training on the base during the war and several thousand Italian and German soldiers were held there as prisoners of war.
