IU takes title shot

The road to a regular season Great Midwest Hockey League championship will be an uphill one for IU, but the Hoosiers are ready to climb it. IU (12-7-1, 2-3-1 GMHL) will begin the home stretch of the GMHL season this weekend with a pair of road games against Ferris State University and Michigan State University.

Track coach says best is yet to come

Striving to stay perfect

The Hoosiers' fast success and 3-0 start so far this season has surprised even themselves. After stunning both Notre Dame and Middle Tennessee State this past weekend, the men's tennis team's confidence level must be high. "We knew we had a very good chance of beating them," sophomore Ryan Recht said of the team's matches against Notre Dame and Middle Tennessee State. "We went in with the intention of winning."

Coach looking to rebuild tradition

A team that once won six National Championships and 23 Big Ten titles only finished 32nd overall in last year's NCAA's. But that has not discouraged first year IU men's swimming coach Ray Looze in the least. Looze accepted the job looking ahead to the future of the program.

Rose belongs in the Hall, not baseball

Just when you thought Pete Rose's plea for a return to baseball might be accepted by Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, the dear Mr. Rose (a.k.a. Charlie Hustle) found a way to foil his opportunity. Rose was reportedly seen last week at some Las Vegas casinos, and now Selig and other baseball heads are questioning whether or not Rose would still be susceptible to betting on baseball again.

Sprinter off to a fast start

The No. 14 track and field team has struggled in the early part of the indoor season with team mentality, Coach Marshall Goss said. But for junior sprinter Ryan Sarbinoff, taking the team to a Big Ten Chamionship is one of his goals, he said.

Track team heads to Illinois

Saturday the No. 19 men's track and field team travels to Illinois for their third dual meet in as many weeks. The team cruised to victory in their first meet at Michigan but fell to No. 13 Purdue and Ohio State last weekend. Coach Marshall Goss said he expects a challenge similar to last weekend. Though unranked, he said Illinois is still a dangerous team.

IU drops road contest at Iowa

After a week of good practices, the women's basketball team was still unable to pull off a win at Iowa. They lost the game 78-62 and are left with the record of 9-9, 2-6 in the Big Ten. The Iowa Hawkeyes improve to 11-7 (3-4).

Hoosiers hope to cage Cardinals

Thursday's practice for the IU men's basketball team was not lacking intensity. Loud vocals from both the players and the coaches could be heard throughout the two-hour practice. And there was enough emotional static in the air that there was almost a fight between two players.

'Saved' star to perform in Union

Dustin Diamond, better known as "Screech Powers" from the television sitcom "Saved By the Bell," has transformed from mismatched dork to a goatee-sporting, stand-up comic and will be bringing his post-adolescent humor to IU on Feb. 27 in the Indiana Memorial Union's Alumni Hall.

Proceeds from calendar to benefit charity

Members of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity are getting involved with the campus and community, forming two new charity-based committees. The 160-member fraternity has also created a calendar of female students in an effort to save the Crestmont Boys and Girls Club.

School of Informatics finds new home

BloomingKids still going strong after 8 years

Every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, a crowd of IU students gathers at Showalter Fountain, anxiously awaiting the arrival of a few school buses crowded with elementary students. Each week, about 60 IU students volunteer their time for the BloomingKids program.

An evening of Brahms and Bartók

Wednesday evening the IU Philharmonic Orchestra performed its first concert of the semester, and what an interesting concert it proved to be. All of the pieces featured on the program were relatively obscure to the casual listener and all featured rather interesting takes on musical tradition.
