Proceeds from calendar to benefit charity

Members of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity are getting involved with the campus and community, forming two new charity-based committees. The 160-member fraternity has also created a calendar of female students in an effort to save the Crestmont Boys and Girls Club. \nThe 2003 calendar, entitled "ZBT's Cream of the Crimson," features women of the greek system in formal wear. The calendar will go on sale this weekend.\n"There has been a real push for us to get involved," said Outreach Committee Chair Adam Jacobs. "We feel there is a lot that can be done."\nSeparated in two different charity-based groups, each committee serves a specific purpose. The new Outreach Committee serves to reach out primarily to the people on campus, while the Community Service Committee serves to help people in the community. \nThe Outreach Committee alone serves approximately 14 different groups on campus, including the Alcohol and Drug Information Center, the Commission on Multicultural Understanding, the Disabled Student Services Office and the Office of the Dean of Students.\nThe Bloomington Boys and Girls Club is also getting some much needed help from the fraternity. Their Crestmont location, offering services to children young and old, needs approximately $4,000 a month to stay alive. \nJoe Stebbins, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club, said he feels it is important for the community that the Crestmont location stays in business. \n"It offers a variety of programs trying to meet every kid's needs," he said. "It's almost a family within itself." \nZBT is trying to hold that family together. After several months of taking applications and putting in work, they were able to form the calendar, which features 12 girls. The calendars are $12 each, and proceeds go to the Boys and Girls Club. \nZBT's Philanthropy Chair Matt Spraker said he hopes they make a difference. \n"They really need help bad," he said. "We're hoping to raise between $4,000 and $5,000," Stebbins said. "It would be a good start. We're just trying to keep open as long as we can."\nThe fraternity's calendar will be available at the Indiana Memorial Union and throughout the dorms.
