Seeing through a new lens

·

The old saying "seeing is believing" holds true for much of scientific research. As visual beings, the better we can see something, the better chance that we have of understanding how it works and how to fix it when it's broken. When researchers apply technology that astronomers use to filter out atmospheric distortions to seeing individual cells in the back of the human eye, seeing is not only believing, but it may lead to better vision.

Now that the IUSA season is underway, more student government tickets are getting the support they need to run their campaigns. The Crimson ticket, led by presidential candidate Casey Cox, is running under the motto: "True Students, True Voice, True Colors." "This is not just student government, it's student advocacy," Cox said. As their motto suggests, the Crimson candidates' approach to student government is less about politics and more about student support.

IU music faculty take spotlight

·

It's refreshing to see composers given top billing and a moment in the spotlight. So much of our concert life is spent watching conductors and singers interpret the music that we may forget it is actually the composers who brought the music into being and who give the audience a reason to gather.

Politics, religion, caffeine and ice

·

Do you hate America, but just love a cold cola beverage? Then worry no longer, because the market has discovered you as a buyer and wants to quench your thirst. Get ready for "Mecca Cola." Yes, it's true. Tawfik Mathlouthi, a French entrepreneur, has discovered that anti-American sentiment is turning out to be quite the cash cow far off from our shores and has decided to capitalize on the ire by bottling it, carbonating it and infusing it with caramel coloring. Greeks are anti-alcohol?

·

There is an underage drinking problem at IU. And at Purdue. And at Harvard. This problem exists at every university across the nation. If you don't believe it, stay sober for a night, go to a party, and observe. Observe the action of a student "fresh" out of high school who thinks it would be cool to bong four beers in 40 seconds after consuming three shots of Jack Daniels whiskey. Observe an intoxicated sophomore climb to the top of a bar not realizing all it takes is a fall from that bar to end up in a hospital bed. And if you care about your peers, help them realize the possible consequences of their actions.

Cars and Coors

·

It's February, and that means a few things. It's time for love, presidential holidays and NASCAR. It's true, I am a NASCAR fan. You may be wondering, "His picture doesn't make him look like a hillbilly, beer-guzzling car junky!" Well, I am, other than the hillbilly car junky part. It all started when my older brother moved to Charlotte, N.C., the NASCAR capital of the world. My brother is easily influenced, and since he was surrounded by stock-car racing fans everywhere, he soon became one too. So I did the same thing you readers are probably doing now -- I made fun of him until he would cry.

Schools need improvements

The No Child Left Behind Act, signed by President Bush in January 2002, designated an accountability standard, requiring statewide exams to track the progress of students and teachers. What the president has done, essentially, is drive a stake into the weakening heart of American education. Today, that wound is exposed -- out of Indiana's 292 school districts, 270 do not meet federal standards.
