Young dancers showcase talent

It always amazes me when men possess grace. Female ballerinas have it naturally, but male ballet dancers are incredible in their ability to jump, do complicated dance steps and stand on point, seemingly without effort. Saturday night saw a diverse audience come for a taste of the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company at the IU Auditorium. The ABT Studio Company is a classical company featuring 12 handpicked young dancers from all over the world. Ranging in age from 16 to 21, the dancers train with expert choreographers to prepare for the American Ballet Theatre.

Performance lacks passion

An evening of music by Maurice Ravel and Hector Berlioz should be full of spectacular colors and daring playing. This was the case only about half the time in Sunday night's Symphony Orchestra concert, conducted by Christopher Larkin, a British-trained brass player and conductor.

Indy plans 22-story hotel

INDIANAPOLIS -- A 22-story luxury hotel and condominium tower is being proposed for a long-vacant spot just a block from the city's Monument Circle. Plans for the $75 million project were announced Monday by city officials. The tower -- at Illinois and Washington streets next to Circle Centre mall -- would have 220 hotel rooms and 24 condominiums.

Wrestlers fall to rival Boilermakers

Senior's play is 'inspiration'

In one word, the only way to describe what senior Karie Schlukebir did for the Hoosiers this past weekend is "amazing." Since Schlukebir is currently battling cancer, she was forced to serve underhand against Marquette Golden Eagles because her arm felt too weak to serve overhand.

Swimming seniors go out with win

It was important to the seniors of the IU women's swim team to go out with a bang. And they did just that in overpowering South Eastern Conference-foe Kentucky on Senior Day. IU won the dual meet 135-102 after swimming several of the later events as "exhibition" events, in efforts to not run up the score.

Defensive intensity helps out offense

Prior to Sunday's game against No.15 Minnesota, the IU women's basketball team needed to furiously defend and not let the Golden Gophers attempt easy shots. The Hoosiers (9-11, 2-8 Big Ten) carried that insistent demeanor over to offense, as they continuously drove to and attacked the basket at Assembly Hall.

Freshman player decides to transfer

It may not have been too hard to read Daryl Pegram's unhappiness. With just two early season game appearances for the IU men's basketball team to his credit, the freshman forward spent the last couple of months on the bench, dressed in street clothes.

Hoosiers drop ball at home against Spartans

Saturday night brought some welcome change for the Hoosiers. For the first time in four games, cheers were aimed in their direction as they took the court and, behind that supportive crowd, played with more energy and intensity than they displayed during their four game road trip.

Spring enrollment reaches an all-time high

IU's enrollment is at an all-time high again this semester, with a total of 93,664 students enrolled for spring semester classes on all eight campuses. IU Bloomington's enrollment is 36,281, up 2.3 percent from spring semester last year.

A Special Success

It was a balmy 16 degrees outside and a line of scantily-clad divers was forming in front of a pool and over 100 spectators. Led by IU junior Brad Snyder, wearing a Cow costume and a multi-colored clown wig, more than 20 people went for a swim into the icy pool for the aptly-named "Polar Bear Plunge." This sort of crazy activity ran rampant throughout the 2003 Spirit of Sport.

House approves trustee position

The Indiana House of Representatives voted 51-45 Tuesday on a bill that would allow faculty to elect a non-voting trustee from their own ranks. State Representatives Matt Pierce and Peggy Welch, both Bloomington Democrats, assisted in co-authoring the bill.
