Newton earns Big Ten honors

Senior forward Jeff Newton was honored as co-Big Ten Player of the Week after getting a double-double in back-to-back games this week. It is the first time Newton, who shares the award with Wisconsin guard Kirk Penney, has received recognition for this weekly accolade.\nNewton scored 20 or more points in the past three contests, leading the team with 24 in the loss against Michigan State on Feb. 8. He also scored 20 points in back-to-back games, first against Michigan on Feb. 12 and then in this past Saturday's loss to Wisconsin. His average over the past three games is 21.3 points and nine rebounds. \nNewton leads the league in double-doubles with 10. He is in 11th place in the Big Ten for overall scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game. Newton leads the league in rebounds per game with 8.9.\nHe is also finding consistency in his free throw shooting, going 28 out of 33 from the line.
