Two styles of comedy prevailed in Hollywood during the 1930s: sophistication and screwball. The 1936 film "My Man Godfrey" blends both of these sub-genres together, making fun of the upper-crust socialites who abound in wealthy conservatism, and the pie-in-the-face schtick of acts like the Three Stooges or the Marx Brothers.

Somewhere between the realms of true brilliance and utter insanity lies a thin line. A line that legendary music producer Phil Spector has fought to balance upon for most of his life. But alas, insanity seems to have finally gotten the best of one of rock's most famous madmen.
Millions of people around the world took to the streets last weekend to express their contempt for military action in Iraq and what is seen as American aggression.
Work sucks. And everyone participates. For every disgruntled employee who toils away at a place of business they loathe, there is an obnoxious consumer to frequent the place and give them a reason to loathe it. They check. They balance. They keep capitalism rolling.
An unusual six-year leave allows former IU president Myles Brand to return and collect an estimated $300,000 in deferred compensation. University policy typically allows for a two-year leave and why this exception was made is unclear.

Few individuals have made a more powerful impact on the academic environment of IU than Herman Hudson, founder of IU's Department of Afro-American Studies, who passed away Monday in his home in Southfield, Mich. Hudson had just turned 80 Sunday. The official cause and time of death have not yet been determined. William Wiggins, the active chair of the Department of Afro-American Studies, said the impact of Hudson's death is similar to the deaths of Herman B Wells and Bill Armstrong. "This is a major loss for IU and it's a time for us to reflect on the contributions and improvements he made to the University," Wiggins said.
Last week a bill that would bring Indiana's open-container law into compliance with federal guidelines was endorsed by the Indiana Senate Transportation and Homeland Security Committee.
Over the course of this season, several readers have come up with suggestions and ideas that are just plain good -- or at least worth repeating in print. Earlier in the year, I wrote about the problem of students not being able to get close enough to the action at Assembly Hall. Since an enlarged student section or seating on basis of seniority is still a pipe dream, one reader gave me an idea that seems like it would work.

This time last year, junior Mike Minton could not even throw a shot put without excruciating pain from a ball of cartilage that had formed in his elbow. Now, he is winning invitationals against competition from around the country. This past weekend the No. 17 men's track and field team traveled to Plainfield, Ind., for the Canon IV Classic meet where Minton easily won the shot put. This was his second victory in as many weeks.
First came a win against Iowa in Assembly Hall 89-68. Then it was the surprise ending at Wisconsin 49-48 that gave the women's basketball team a two game winning streak. They look to continue the streak when they play Northwestern (7-17, 2-11 Big Ten) tonight at the Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. IU (11-11, 4-8) last met this Northwestern team at Assembly Hall and defeated the Wildcats 62-52. It was a game where three Hoosiers scored in double figures.
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- When the Hoosier's road losing streak began over a month ago at Ohio State, Coach Mike Davis lamented that his team lacked a true leader, a floor general who could pull the team together during tough times and infuse some confidence. After the Hoosiers' home win against Michigan Feb. 12, he said he had decided to take over the leadership role rather than look to any of his seniors.
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The men's basketball team did something a little different Wednesday night. Against Iowa in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the Hoosiers picked up a halftime lead. And this time, they didn't squander it. For the first time in seven tries, and not since Dec. 31, 2002, IU picked up a road win against the Iowa Hawkeyes, 79-63.
Being stuck in middle of the "Storm of the Decade" felt a little sweeter for the women's water polo team after coming off its successful weekend. They finally made it back to Bloomington two and half days after they were supposed to return.
